Why PC Prices Fall—and What Unsold Inventory Really Means for Buyers

A discounted PC may reflect excess stock of one configuration, not a market-wide price collapse. Here is how inventory, component costs, shipments and 2026 forecasts affect what buyers pay.

PC prices can fall when a retailer or manufacturer has more units of a specific configuration than it expects to sell at the current price. A markdown, coupon, bundle or clearance sale then helps convert that stock into cash. That does not mean every PC is becoming cheaper, however. Prices also depend on memory and storage costs, processor and graphics supply, product mix, demand and channel timing.

Recent 2026 market data illustrates the distinction. Gartner’s preliminary Q3 worldwide shipment report, published October 12, 2026, linked a 22.4% year-over-year shipment decline to higher prices, scarce-component allocation and a shift toward more expensive configurations—not to excess inventory. For a buyer, a specific discount can be real even while overall average prices rise.

What makes a PC price fall?

A seller has too many units of one model

Inventory becomes a problem at the level of a particular model, configuration or sales channel. If a retailer ordered 16GB laptops with a particular processor and demand shifts to another configuration, those units tie up cash and shelf or warehouse space. The retailer can reduce the price to increase the chance of selling them before demand moves on.

The same mechanism can occur earlier in the supply chain. A manufacturer or distributor may lower its selling price to a channel partner, fund a promotion or approve a rebate. The eventual customer may see a lower checkout price even though component costs have not changed.

Promotions can hide the size of a price cut

A seller does not have to change the permanent list price. A limited coupon, bundle, free upgrade, trade-in credit or clearance event can reduce the effective price while preserving the advertised price for other buyers. Such a promotion may offset an earlier increase rather than represent a broad fall in production costs.

Gartner’s January 2026 account of the fourth quarter of 2025 provides a period-specific example: price pressure and promotions offset earlier increases on high-end graphics processors and AI PCs, leaving average selling prices stable or slightly lower. That result describes that quarter; it is not evidence that the same pattern applies to every market or the current quarter.

Product transitions create local clearance pressure

When a replacement configuration arrives, a seller has an incentive to move remaining units of the older one. A discount in this situation reflects the age, specification or sales priority of that stock. It does not prove that processors, memory or storage have become cheaper across the industry.

What “unsold inventory” means in practice

Retail inventory is specific and local

Unsold inventory is the quantity a particular manufacturer, distributor or retailer has not yet sold to its next customer. A store can have excess stock of one laptop while another store is short of it. A discount therefore tells you most about that seller’s position on that model, not about the entire PC market.

Inventory also carries timing risk. A retailer that bought units before a component-cost increase may have a lower cost basis than a retailer ordering later. Conversely, a seller holding expensive stock may need a sharper promotion if the market price falls. Buyers can benefit from either situation, but the reason for the discount affects whether comparable replacements will also be cheap.

Shipments are not a warehouse count

Analyst shipment figures generally measure PCs entering sales channels—sales from vendors to distributors, retailers or other channel partners. They do not directly count every unsold computer in each retailer’s warehouse or store. A shipment decline can mean weaker demand, constrained production, delayed orders, a change in configuration mix or a deliberate reduction in channel inventory.

For that reason, “shipments are down” is not a reliable shortcut for “retailers have too much stock.” You need seller-level evidence, such as a visible clearance, an unusually deep discount on a specific configuration or a product being removed from the normal range.

Why prices can rise while PC shipments fall

Memory and storage costs pass through to buyers

DRAM and NAND storage are major inputs in a PC. When those components become more expensive or harder to obtain, vendors have several choices: raise prices, reduce the number of lower-cost configurations, delay or limit certain models, or change the memory and storage specification at a given price.

Gartner said memory costs surged in Q3 2026 and that vendors passed higher component costs to customers. It also described a shift toward higher-priced configurations. IDC separately identified memory shortages as affecting price, volume, availability and product configuration.

Higher prices can reduce unit demand

Price and volume can move in opposite directions. If the average PC costs more, some households and businesses postpone purchases or select a cheaper device. Shipment volume can therefore decline even as the average selling price rises for the units that do ship.

IDC’s June 2, 2026 outlook forecast an 11.3% decline in worldwide PC shipments and 17% growth in average selling prices for 2026. Both figures are forecasts, not final full-year measurements and not a promise about a particular retailer’s price.

Manufacturers may prioritize profitable configurations

When components are scarce, a vendor may allocate them to higher-margin or higher-priced systems instead of maintaining every entry-level option. The resulting sales mix can lift the average price even if some individual models are discounted. A buyer may see a cheap clearance laptop beside a more expensive replacement range without any contradiction.

What the latest shipment figures actually show

Source and period Reported or forecast figure How to interpret it
Gartner, Q3 2026 55.4 million worldwide PC shipments, down 22.4% year over year Preliminary shipment estimate based on sales into channels. Gartner attributed the decline to higher prices, vendor reprioritization of scarce components and a shift toward higher-priced configurations, rather than excess inventory.
Gartner, Q1 2026 62.8 million worldwide PC shipments, up 4% year over year The increase was artificially inflated by vendors and distributors building inventory before expected Q2 price increases. The comparison quarter had also been inflated by front-loading ahead of U.S. tariffs.
IDC outlook, published June 2, 2026 11.3% projected decline in 2026 worldwide shipments Full-year forecast, not a completed-year result.
IDC outlook, published June 2, 2026 17% projected growth in 2026 PC average selling price Forecast for the worldwide average, not a measured increase at every store or for every model.
Gartner, 2025 annual total reported in 2026 More than 270 million worldwide shipments, up 9.1% from 2024 Gartner linked the rebound to Windows 11 upgrades and other demand factors, including inventory purchased ahead of expected memory price increases.

These figures measure different things and should not be blended into a single retail-price claim. Unit shipments describe volume entering channels; average selling price describes the mix and price of those units. Neither metric reveals the live inventory count of a particular seller.

Why inventory timing can distort the numbers

Pre-buying pulls future shipments forward

Vendors and distributors sometimes build inventory before an expected cost increase, tariff or supply constraint. That creates a temporary shipment spike because products enter the channel earlier than they otherwise would. Later quarters can then look unusually weak when the channel works through that stock.

Gartner said Q1 2026 growth was artificially inflated by inventory builds before expected Q2 price increases. It also noted that the first-quarter comparison with 2025 was difficult because the earlier period had been front-loaded ahead of U.S. tariffs. A high shipment quarter in that context is not a clean measure of ordinary buyer demand, and a subsequent decline is not automatically proof of excess retail stock.

Inventory can move between channel levels

A manufacturer may report a shipment when a distributor receives a product, while the retailer has not yet sold it to an end user. If distributors are full, new orders can slow even when retail shelves are relatively empty. Conversely, retailers can discount products while vendors continue shipping other, more expensive configurations. The physical location and age of the inventory matter.

How to tell whether a discount is useful

Evaluate the exact deal rather than inferring a market trend from the percentage off. Check these details before treating a lower price as a genuine bargain:

  • Exact model and processor: Two systems with the same family name can use different processor tiers or generations.
  • Graphics hardware: Verify the precise integrated or discrete graphics configuration, not just a marketing series name.
  • Memory: Record capacity, memory type and whether it is upgradeable. A low price may reflect a smaller or non-upgradeable configuration.
  • Storage: Compare capacity and type. A discounted system with less storage is not directly comparable with the former list-price version.
  • Display: Check size, resolution, refresh rate and panel characteristics.
  • Operating system: Confirm that the advertised edition and activation are included.
  • Warranty and returns: A clearance unit may have different return terms, a shorter warranty or be sold by a marketplace seller rather than the manufacturer.
  • Final checkout price: Include delivery, taxes, required accessories and any promotional conditions.

If the specification changed while the model name stayed similar, the apparent discount may simply be a lower-cost configuration. If the specifications match and the seller is clearing a discontinued line, the discount is more likely to be inventory-driven—but it still applies to that model, not automatically to replacement PCs.

Signals that point to inventory pressure

Observed signal What it can indicate What it cannot prove
Large discount on one exact configuration The seller may have more units than expected or may be clearing that model. That all PCs or the underlying components are cheaper.
Coupon or bundle limited to a short period A tactical promotion to accelerate sales or match a competitor. A permanent fall in the product’s cost.
Older model discounted beside a new replacement Priority has shifted to the newer range. That the replacement will receive the same discount.
Worldwide shipments decline Lower demand, constrained supply, changed configurations or channel timing. That your local retailer has excess inventory.
Average selling price rises A more expensive product mix or higher input costs. That every individual PC has become more expensive.

Should you buy now or wait?

There is no universal answer from worldwide shipment data. The sensible choice depends on your need, the exact configuration and the price available in your region.

Buy now when the specific system meets your requirements

Buying now is reasonable when you need a PC for work, study or an imminent project, the exact memory and storage are adequate, and the final price is acceptable compared with equivalent listings. A confirmed discount on a configuration you actually want is more relevant than a forecast about the global average.

Wait when your requirements are flexible

Waiting can make sense if you do not need the computer soon, the discounted model has compromises you would otherwise upgrade, or a replacement generation is already appearing. Waiting is not a guarantee of lower prices: component shortages and higher input costs can instead reduce availability or push prices upward.

Do not wait solely for a shipment headline

Gartner’s Q3 2026 explanation shows why a large shipment decline is insufficient evidence of coming bargains. The decline was associated with higher prices and constrained component allocation. IDC’s June forecast likewise anticipated lower shipment volume alongside higher average prices. Use those reports as market context, then judge the specific listing.

A practical comparison method

  1. Write down your minimum specification. Set the processor tier, graphics requirement, memory capacity, storage capacity, display requirements and operating system before looking at discounts.
  2. Capture the complete price. Record the checkout total, shipping, tax, accessories and any coupon conditions.
  3. Compare like with like. Match the exact processor, graphics, memory, storage, display and warranty rather than comparing family names.
  4. Check upgradeability. Determine whether memory or storage can be expanded if the discounted configuration is smaller.
  5. Read the return terms. Confirm the return window, restocking conditions and who handles warranty service.
  6. Classify the discount. Decide whether it appears to be a model clearance, a temporary promotion, a configuration change or simply a price that was raised before being marked down.
  7. Choose based on use, not the headline. Buy when the complete package satisfies your needs at a price you accept; wait only when the likely benefit outweighs the risk of higher prices or reduced availability.

What the 2026 evidence does—and does not—tell buyers

The available figures are worldwide, not a country-level retail-price tracker. Gartner’s Q3 2026 numbers are preliminary. IDC’s 2026 shipment and average-selling-price numbers were forecasts published June 2, 2026. They do not identify current inventory at a particular store, local discount depth or the fair price of an individual laptop or desktop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Analyst commentary does indicate continuing supply risk. Jean Philippe Bouchard, IDC’s vice president of devices and consumers, said: “We’re not seeing any relief to the memory shortage situation before the end of 2027, which means prices will continue to rise and PC manufacturers will struggle to maintain full product portfolios for the foreseeable future.” That is an attributed analyst view, not a guaranteed timetable. It reinforces the need to inspect the actual configuration and local price instead of assuming that waiting will produce a broad clearance.

The most reliable buyer-level conclusion is narrower: unsold inventory can create an excellent deal on a particular PC, while market-wide shipment and price statistics can move in the opposite direction. Treat the discount and the global data as separate pieces of evidence.
