PC game prices and PC hardware costs are set in different markets, so one is not a reliable guide to the other. Game prices reflect decisions about a title’s perceived value and regional pricing; PC buyers respond to hardware prices by changing what they buy or when they buy it. The available figures illustrate those separate forces, but do not establish a direct causal link between them.
Why game prices follow a different set of decisions
A game publisher is pricing a digital entertainment product. Steamworks says developers may consider a game’s value, comparable products and customer expectations. Its currency tools offer three approaches: simple exchange-rate conversion; purchasing-power conversion; and a multi-variable approach that also considers the expected cost of comparable entertainment goods. Developers can also set prices individually by currency. Steamworks puts it plainly: “Many developers choose to determine their own pricing in each currency, and that’s just fine.” Steamworks pricing documentation

That means an exchange rate alone does not determine what a game costs in every region. A developer’s chosen local price, the local purchasing context and comparisons with other entertainment can all matter. Different games can also occupy different price points: a premium release and a lower-priced hit need not move in tandem.

Ukie’s May 2025 infographic, drawing on Omdia, reports that UK digital PC game software spending reached £647 million in 2024, down 1.8% year over year. It also notes that lower-priced hits such as Palworld and Helldivers II affected average PC game prices. This is a UK spending figure for one year, not a global price trend, and spending is not itself a measure of hardware costs. Ukie’s 2024 UK market infographic

Why hardware costs lead to different buyer choices
People buying a PC or its components face a purchase decision involving a physical product and a budget. When they consider the price too high, their options can include postponing the purchase, choosing lower specifications, or considering refurbished hardware. Those responses affect what buyers say they might do; they do not tell us how component costs were set or what happened in actual sales.
What PC buyers said they might change
Futurum Research’s March 2026 PC Buyers Survey covered 462 PC buyers. In that survey, 77% said they would postpone a PC purchase rather than overpay. Among respondents who said they would reduce specifications, 45% named storage as their first sacrifice, while 5% named processor speed and RAM. Separately, 55% said they would consider certified refurbished hardware. These are survey responses and intentions, not observed sales or a forecast of component prices. - NVIDIA Ampere Streaming Multiprocessors: The all-new Ampere SM brings 2X the FP32 throughput and improved power efficiency.
- 2nd Generation RT Cores: Experience 2X the throughput of 1st gen RT Cores, plus concurrent RT and shading for a whole new level of ray-tracing performance.
- 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. These cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure.
- OC Mode : 1500 MHz (Boost Clock)/Default Mode : 1470 MHz (Boost Clock)
The contrast is useful: game-pricing guidance focuses on perceived entertainment value and regional pricing choices, while hardware buyers may react to a costly PC by waiting or adjusting their specification. Neither response makes game prices a measure of GPU, RAM or storage prices.
What hardware surveys can—and cannot—show
Valve’s Hardware & Software Survey is monthly, voluntary and anonymous. Its September 2026 results list graphics-card models and their shares among surveyed Steam customers. That describes hardware in use by survey participants; it is not a retail price index or a record of what those components cost to manufacture. Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey

Read alongside the buyer survey, the Steam survey can help describe what hardware participants report using, while Futurum’s survey describes purchase intentions. Neither source establishes current street prices or production costs for GPUs, RAM, storage or complete PCs.

- For games: compare the same title across regions and dates, and distinguish a publisher-set local price from a currency conversion or market-wide average.
- For hardware: compare the same component or PC configuration, condition and seller context; distinguish new from certified refurbished and account for specification changes.
- For market trends: check whether a figure measures consumer spending, a listed retail price, reported hardware use or buyer intentions. Those are different measures.
- For cause and effect: do not infer that a rise in hardware costs forces game prices up, or that cheaper games mean PC parts are becoming more affordable. The cited sources do not establish either relationship.
The sources cited here do not provide a current, comparable time series for PC game prices and hardware costs, nor do they establish the effect of tariffs, supply constraints or component production costs. The evidence supports treating the two as distinct markets—not assigning a shared cause to price movements.
