Why Page-Corner Detection Can Miss the Page: Adaptive Thresholds Explained

A threshold adapted to strong printed text can discard a faint page boundary. Yan Wang’s scanner account shows why threshold caps need to work alongside contrast, geometry, and safe failure behavior.

A page-corner detector can miss the page because its adaptive edge threshold is set by stronger edges elsewhere in the photo. In a document-scanner account by Yan Wang, printed letter strokes sometimes outweighed the subtle boundary between paper and desk; a threshold based on the strongest gradients could then discard the very page outline the detector needed.

How a threshold can erase the page boundary

Wang describes a browser-based document-scanning pipeline that creates a grayscale copy of the image, scales it to a 640-pixel long edge, applies blur, calculates Sobel gradients, builds an adaptive edge map, detects Hough lines, and selects a candidate convex quadrilateral. Each stage depends on useful boundary evidence surviving the earlier ones.

In this account, the edge threshold is based on the 90th percentile of Sobel magnitudes. That is adaptive in the sense that it responds to the image’s gradient distribution; it is not necessarily adaptive to the detector’s actual goal. Printed text can produce strong stroke edges, while the paper-to-desk transition is comparatively faint. If text dominates the distribution, the threshold can be too high for the page border to remain in the edge map. The problem is especially acute when the paper nearly fills the frame and little desk is visible.

This is a general engineering lesson illustrated by Wang’s implementation: an adaptive rule adapts to the measurements it receives, not automatically to the semantic feature a system intends to find.

Why the reported fix was a threshold ceiling

Rather than replacing the percentile setting, Wang reports retaining edgePercentile: 0.9 and minEdgeMagnitude: 14, while capping maxEdgeThreshold at 30. The cap limits how far strong text gradients can raise the cutoff, leaving weaker page-border gradients a chance to survive.

Wang reports that, in a comparison using 300 real frames, the cap of 30 found pages in 41.0% of frames, versus 23.3% with a cap of 220. These are figures reported by the author for that described test, not independently verified benchmark results. The test’s publication year is not established in the available account, and the comparison does not establish that 30 is the right cap for other cameras, image scales, lighting, or implementations.

Brother DS-640 Compact Mobile Document Scanner, (Model: DS640)
  • FAST SPEEDS - Scans color and black and white documents a blazing speed up to 16ppm (1). Color scanning won’t slow you down as the color scan speed is the same as the black and white scan speed.
  • ULTRA COMPACT – At less than 1 foot in length and only about 1. 5lbs in weight you can fit this device virtually anywhere (a bag, a purse, even a pocket).
  • READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
  • WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
  • OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)

The useful implication is not “always set the cap to 30.” It is to inspect whether a percentile threshold can climb above the magnitude of the target boundary, then test a ceiling against the images and failure costs that matter for the application.

Why edge strength alone cannot identify a page

Use contrast direction as evidence

Wang reports that the median contrast between paper and light wood was roughly 14 luma levels. A minimum contrast setting of 14 reportedly rejected about half of true pages, so the author chose a minimum of 8 and relied more on polarity: the page interior should be brighter than its exterior along all four sides. This is an author-reported measurement and design decision, not a universal contrast threshold.

  • SIMPLE FILE MANAGEMENT — Scanner allows the creation of searchable PDFs with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and convert scans to editable Word or Excel files effortlessly; Designed for home and office document scanning

That distinction matters because a detector needs more than a line-like edge. A candidate quadrilateral should have plausible inside-versus-outside relationships around its perimeter. A numerical contrast floor that seems reasonable for one background can reject real pages in another; checking whether the contrast points in the expected direction can provide different evidence.

Check geometry and support

The account also describes safeguards for candidate quadrilaterals:

  • Reject a candidate if a side lies within 2% of the image boundary, where the frame edge may be mistaken for a page edge.
  • Require at least 0.42 side support, so a candidate is not accepted merely because its corners and shape look plausible.
  • Choose the largest well-supported quadrilateral, reducing the chance that a rectangle inside the page displaces the full page boundary.
  • Treat candidates smaller than 25% of the frame as proposals rather than automatically applying them.

These checks address different failure modes. The edge threshold determines which image transitions are available; contrast direction and side support help judge whether those transitions plausibly bound a page; geometry helps distinguish a page-sized outline from an interior rectangle or frame artifact.

Make an uncertain crop reversible

Wang describes the detected quadrilateral as a proposal, not unquestioned truth. Users can drag its handles, and callers can decide whether confidence is high enough for automatic application. When detection fails, the function returns null, leaving the original image intact.

That behavior reflects an important cost trade-off: a missed crop is often safer than a confidently wrong crop that removes part of a document. If an incorrect automatic crop is costly, a detector should be allowed to abstain, show a reviewable proposal, or preserve the source image rather than forcing a result.

The author also says weak-edge recovery and contour recovery remain disabled in the shipped defaults because of latency concerns on target hardware, despite improving some reported detection numbers. That is a product-specific performance choice, not a general reason to avoid those techniques; their value depends on measured accuracy and latency in the intended environment.

What the results do—and do not—show

The reported 300-frame comparison suggests that a threshold ceiling improved page detection in the author’s test. It does not establish the size of the improvement on other datasets or phones, nor does a higher detection rate alone show how often the detector produced a false crop. To evaluate a similar system, measure successful page recovery alongside false crops, image conditions, and runtime on the target hardware.

Wang identifies LensUp as a browser-based scanner and says detection runs in the browser and files are not uploaded. Those are the product author’s claims; they are not an independent privacy audit.
