A synthetic check can report success while testing the wrong page. In Sergey Shinder’s account, an HTTP check meant to verify a signed-in customer portal followed a redirect to the login page, received a 200 response and found familiar text in the page header. It stayed green, even though it no longer proved that the authenticated account page worked.
How the check passed on the wrong page
Shinder describes a customer portal check that ran every two minutes. It was supposed to act as a test customer, load the account page and pass when the response was HTTP 200 and contained the words “Customer Portal.”

After the portal moved to a new single sign-on provider, its stored session cookie was no longer accepted. The HTTP client followed the redirect to the login page. That page also returned 200 and included “Customer Portal” in a shared header, so both checks still passed. The monitor was receiving a successful response, but it was not confirming that the test customer was signed in.
Five weeks later, according to Shinder’s 2026 account, a deployment changed how saved addresses loaded. Customers with more than one address saw an error panel, but the test account had only one address. Shinder says the account page was broken for nine days for one fifth of customers while the synthetic check remained green. These are figures from his account, not independently verified incident measurements or industry statistics.

Why a green status can be misleading
A 200 response confirms only a response
HTTP 200 says the server returned a successful response. By itself, it does not establish that the response was the account page, that authentication succeeded or that a customer could complete the intended task.
Shared text can match an unauthenticated page
A broad text assertion can be true on several pages. If the login screen shares a site header with the account area, checking for the site or portal name cannot distinguish them. The check needs evidence that appears only after authentication and is relevant to the journey being monitored.

Test data can miss real failures
The account’s single saved address did not exercise the condition that triggered the reported error. A successful journey with one simple record cannot establish that the same page works for customers with different data or states.

Shinder describes changing the check so that authentication problems and page failures would be easier to distinguish, and so the monitor would verify more than a successful HTTP response.

- Make redirects visible. Stop following redirects silently and treat a 3xx response as a failure with its own label, rather than letting the destination page satisfy the original check.
- Authenticate on each run. Sign in afresh for every check, with the password held in a secret store. This avoids relying on a session cookie that may have become invalid.
- Separate sign-in failures from page outages. Report an unsuccessful login distinctly from a failure after authentication, so the alert points to the stage that did not work.
- Assert on authenticated-only content. Check for items such as the test customer’s account number and the address-list element, rather than a label that also appears on the login screen.
- Use data that exercises meaningful states. Shinder says the test account was expanded to include three addresses, a cancelled order and an expired saved card. These examples reflect the states in his account; they are not a universal required test dataset.
- Log the final URL. Recording where the check ended makes it possible to spot that an apparently successful run landed on the login page.
These are the configuration changes and lessons Shinder reports, not comparative results from testing monitoring products.
What to check in a synthetic-monitoring tool
If you are choosing or reviewing a monitor for an authenticated journey, focus on whether it can make the failure mode observable—not merely whether it can request a URL.

- Can it detect or disable redirect following, and report redirects separately?
- Can it run a browser-based, authenticated journey when the application requires one?
- Can assertions target content specific to the signed-in page or task?
- Can credentials be stored and used as secrets rather than embedded in check definitions or logs?
- Does the run record expose the final URL and the reason the check failed?
Shinder does not name or compare monitoring vendors, so his account does not establish that a particular product supports these capabilities.
A practical way to diagnose a suspicious green check
- Inspect the actual destination. Review the run’s redirect history or final URL. Confirm that it ended at the intended account page, not a login screen or another fallback.
- Verify authentication explicitly. Check for a sign-in success signal that is specific to the authenticated session, not just a 200 response or a shared brand label.
- Test the page’s purpose. Assert on a page-specific element tied to the customer task, such as the account number or address list in Shinder’s example.
- Exercise representative account states. Include data that can expose relevant conditional behavior, then confirm the check is actually evaluating those states.
- Keep failure stages distinguishable. Make it possible to tell whether the request was redirected, sign-in failed, or the authenticated page failed its assertion.
Shinder closes his account with a useful principle: “A check is only as good as the evidence it asks for.”
