Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOpenSCAD can feel slow for three different reasons: the CSG tree may take a long time to compile, the OpenCSG preview may take a long time to draw, or the camera may stutter while you navigate an otherwise manageable preview. A fourth symptom is an STL that previews but fails during a full render because its mesh is invalid. Each problem needs a different remedy.
Start by identifying the slow stage, then change one cause at a time. Simplify expensive boolean trees, keep convexity no higher than the visual result requires, validate imported meshes, test the Manifold backend when your build provides it, and reserve full geometry rendering for validation or export. There is no universal OpenSCAD setting that makes every model fast.

What “slow rendering” means in OpenSCAD
Before editing a model, classify the delay. OpenSCAD has separate work stages, and a change that helps one stage can leave another untouched.
| Symptom | What OpenSCAD is doing | First place to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Delay after changing code, before a preview appears | Parsing modules and building the CSG (constructive solid geometry) tree | Deep nesting, repeated modules, and large boolean expressions |
| Preview takes a long time to draw or refreshes slowly | OpenCSG is converting the boolean tree into a representation that can be displayed interactively | Intersections among negative operands in difference(), excessive convexity, and graphics performance |
F6 full render is slow |
OpenSCAD is evaluating exact geometry, traditionally through CGAL or through another supported backend | Backend choice, geometric complexity, and invalid imported meshes |
| Orbiting, panning, or zooming stutters while the model is already visible | The graphics pipeline is drawing the current preview every frame | Visible-scene complexity and GPU load, not necessarily final geometry time |
| STL appears in preview but full rendering fails | Triangles can be displayed even though exact solid processing cannot build a valid volume | Non-manifold edges, holes, self-intersections, or degenerate triangles in the mesh |
Record the OpenSCAD version, operating system, selected rendering backend, and which operation is slow. Performance behavior can change between builds, so “it is slow” is not a reproducible diagnosis until the stage and version are known.

Time the stages separately
Change a harmless parameter and note the delay before the preview appears. Then press
F6and note the time to a completed geometry render. Finally, orbit and zoom the finished preview. These are three observations, not one benchmark. -
Check the backend and build
Open the rendering settings in your installed build and record whether the model is using Manifold, CGAL, or another available backend. Also record the application version. The same source can behave differently when a backend is unavailable or when a build changes its preview implementation.
-
Use a small isolation model
Temporarily comment out or isolate major modules so that you can determine whether the delay follows a particular boolean branch or imported part. Compare the smallest model that still reproduces the problem with the complete assembly. This separates a local pathological operation from a general hardware limitation.

Check imported meshes before chasing speed
When an imported STL previews but fails during a full render, stop treating it as a performance problem. Validate the file in a mesh-repair tool, inspect manifoldness, and remove degenerate or self-intersecting triangles. A repaired mesh may fix the render failure; it is not a guaranteed speed optimization for a valid STL.
Why boolean structure can make OpenCSG preview expensive
The OpenCSG preview does not simply draw the final watertight solid. It represents the boolean operations needed to display the result. A particularly expensive pattern occurs when difference() contains negative objects that themselves contain intersections. OpenCSG may expand those intersections into many combinations of positive and negative components. Adding another participating component can therefore multiply the combinations that must be drawn.
This explains why two models with similar triangle counts can have very different preview times. The cost is driven by the structure of the CSG tree, not only by the apparent size of the final object. The effect is more noticeable on older or low-end Intel graphics processors, but that observation does not prove that buying a new GPU is the correct first fix.

- Inspect every
difference()whose negative side contains anintersection()or several nested booleans. - Where the resulting solid is unchanged, simplify or regroup operations so that fewer complex negative operands participate in the same difference.
- Build and inspect intermediate positive shapes separately before combining them with cuts. This makes it easier to find the branch that multiplies preview combinations.
- Keep an original copy of the expression and compare the simplified version with a full render. A faster preview is useful only if the geometry remains correct.
Do not assume that flattening every boolean tree is beneficial. Some regroupings change the result, and a tree that is expensive to preview may still be appropriate for the design. Measure the isolated branch and verify the final solid after each structural change.

Use convexity only as high as the preview needs
The convexity value tells OpenCSG how much complexity to account for when displaying extruded or imported geometry whose exact complexity is not known. A larger value can make preview slower. It is not a quality slider for the final solid.
Choosing a practical value
- Identify the object whose display is incorrect or appears clipped when the value is low.
- Increase convexity only until the preview shows that object correctly from the views you use.
- Do not raise convexity globally “to be safe.” Unnecessarily high values add preview work to every refresh.
- Recheck navigation after changing it, because a setting that fixes one display artifact can make camera movement less responsive.
Convexity affects preview representation. It does not repair an invalid STL and does not replace a full render when you need exact geometry.
Preview, throwntogether, and full rendering are different tools
Use the quick preview for design iteration and a full render for geometry validation or export. OpenSCAD’s command-line interface distinguishes an OpenCSG preview from a full render and also documents a throwntogether preview mode. Option names can vary by release, so run openscad --help in the same installation you use for the GUI.

openscad --render -o final.stl model.scad
Treat these as command patterns, not a promise that every historical build accepts identical switches. Confirm the switches and output formats in your version’s help text. The important workflow is to avoid forcing a full exact render every time you need a visual check, while still running that exact render before you trust an export.

Backend choice: test Manifold and CGAL on the actual model
OpenSCAD’s current source characterizes Manifold as the newer, faster backend and CGAL as the older, slower one. That is project guidance, not a model-independent benchmark. Backend availability depends on the build, and a model’s operations may behave differently under each backend.
A safe comparison procedure
- Save the model and note the current backend and OpenSCAD version.
- Render a small representative part, then the complete model, with the current backend.
- If the build offers Manifold, select it and repeat the same operations.
- Compare time to first preview, time to completed exact render, memory use, warnings, and the resulting geometry.
- Keep the backend that is both compatible with your model and faster for the stage that matters to your work.
Do not report a backend as universally faster from one successful test. The cited project description supplies no controlled percentages across hardware, model classes, or software versions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. An advanced experiment: isolate an aggregate operand with render()
In one project issue, a user reported that placing render() around an aggregate operand immediately before a difference() removed a delay for that particular model. The report was an individual case, not a controlled benchmark or a guaranteed optimization.

}
Use this only as an experiment. Save a baseline, render both versions, compare the exact geometry, and time the same operation. If the delay does not improve—or if the result changes—remove the wrapper. A construct that helps one CSG arrangement can be neutral or harmful in another.

Imported STL files: preview success does not prove valid geometry
OpenCSG can draw the triangles of an STL even when exact solid processing cannot form a valid volume. Full rendering expects a manifold mesh: edges must connect consistently, surfaces must not contain unintended holes or ambiguous joins, and triangles must not be degenerate or self-intersecting.
Repair checklist
- Open the STL in a mesh inspection or repair application.
- Run its manifoldness or watertightness check.
- Find and repair boundary edges, flipped faces, duplicate faces, non-manifold vertices, and zero-area triangles.
- Remove internal shells or self-intersections that do not belong in the solid.
- Export a repaired STL, re-import it, and test a full render rather than relying only on preview.
This branch of troubleshooting addresses correctness and render failure. Do not expect mesh repair to accelerate a valid, already-manifold model automatically.
When camera navigation is the bottleneck
Navigation lag is the time between a mouse movement and the next displayed frame. It can occur even when CSG compilation and exact geometry rendering are acceptable. The preview must redraw the visible scene repeatedly, so a complex assembly or a large imported mesh can overwhelm the graphics path.
Recommended Free Tools
- Compare navigation with major modules isolated to identify the visible object that causes the frame-rate drop.
- Use the fastest preview mode available while positioning the camera; reserve exact rendering for checks and exports.
- Reduce the number of simultaneously visible complex branches during inspection, then restore the complete model for validation.
- Check whether the same scene is responsive in a new view or with imported meshes hidden. This distinguishes a scene-specific load from a general GPU problem.
If simpler geometry and conservative convexity still leave only preview drawing slow, hardware may be relevant. The project FAQ notes greater impact on older or low-end Intel GPUs, but it does not establish a purchase threshold or identify a particular graphics product.
Choosing the remedy by symptom
| Observed bottleneck | Most relevant action | How to verify improvement | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preview refresh is slow around nested booleans | Restructure complex negative intersections and reduce unnecessary combinations | Compare preview refresh on the same camera and isolated branch | That a GPU upgrade will fix CSG expansion |
| Preview is slow for extrusions or imported shapes | Lower convexity to the smallest value that displays correctly | Check the same views for clipping or incorrect visibility | That higher convexity improves final geometry |
| Exact render is slow while preview is acceptable | Test Manifold if available; simplify exact geometry without changing the design | Time identical full renders and inspect output equality | That the source’s “fast” label is a universal benchmark |
| Preview works but exact render fails on an STL | Validate and repair manifoldness and degenerate geometry | Re-import the repaired file and complete a full render | That preview proves the STL is a valid solid |
| One complex difference causes a repeatable delay | Experiment with render() around the aggregate operand |
Compare timing and geometry with a saved baseline | That a single issue report applies to every model |
| Only orbiting and zooming stutter | Isolate visible objects and use a lighter preview mode | Measure responsiveness with the same camera path | That exact-render optimizations will improve frame rate |
A repeatable fast-model workflow
- Keep the source parametric and save a baseline before optimization.
- Record version, backend, and the three timings: preview refresh, full render, and navigation.
- Find the smallest module that reproduces the delay.
- For preview-only slowness, inspect negative intersections in
difference()first. - Set convexity only high enough for correct display.
- Use OpenCSG or throwntogether preview during iteration and avoid unnecessary exact renders.
- Test Manifold against CGAL when the installed build supports both, using the same model and output checks.
- Try the
render()aggregate-operand experiment only for a repeatable complex boolean delay. - Validate every imported STL that previews but fails to render exactly.
- After each change, compare geometry, warnings, and the stage-specific timing. Keep a change only when it improves the target bottleneck without changing the intended solid.
This process matters because OpenSCAD performance is a combination of CSG structure, mesh validity, backend implementation, graphics hardware, and the operation you are asking the program to perform. Diagnose that combination instead of searching for one global “fast render” switch.
