OpenAI delayed the planned late-June 2024 alpha of ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode because it said the feature needed more work on content refusals, the user experience and infrastructure for real-time service at scale. Futurism interpreted the refusal work as a possible sign of safety trouble, but OpenAI did not identify a specific defect or say the feature had failed a safety test.
What OpenAI said caused the delay
In its June 2024 update, OpenAI postponed the planned small alpha by about a month, saying it needed “one more month to reach our bar to launch.” The company named three work areas:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Refusal behavior: improving the model’s ability to detect and refuse certain content.
- User experience: refining how the voice feature worked for people using it.
- Infrastructure: preparing to serve real-time responses as usage scaled to millions.
OpenAI described these as concurrent launch-readiness tasks, not as a single root cause. It did not rank them or say infrastructure alone drove the delay. Its update also said it was working to maintain real-time responses while scaling. OpenAI’s June 2024 update
What “trouble behind the scenes” meant—and what it did not
Futurism’s June 26, 2024 article treated OpenAI’s mention of refusal behavior as a possible indication of safety problems. That is an interpretation of the company’s stated work, not a confirmed finding. OpenAI did not disclose a particular harmful output, a specific safety failure, or evidence that the feature was unsafe.

The careful reading is that refusal behavior was still being improved before launch. That matters for a voice system that responds in real time, but the announcement does not establish what prompted the work or how serious any issue was. Futurism’s report
What happened to the rollout plan
At the time of the delay, OpenAI said it planned to start with a small group of ChatGPT Plus users and expand access to more Plus users in the fall, provided the feature met its safety and reliability bar. Those were plans announced in 2024, not guarantees about current access.

In July 2024, OpenAI announced that a limited Advanced Voice Mode rollout was beginning for a small group of Plus users. The company described the mode as supporting more natural, real-time conversation, including interruptions and emotional responsiveness. That later step shows the staged rollout moved forward; it does not establish who can use the feature today. OpenAI’s July 2024 rollout announcement

Futurism framed the postponement as disappointing to fans, but the available reporting does not provide a representative poll, a reliable count of critics or evidence that opposition was widespread. “Fans slam” should therefore be read as the article’s characterization of reactions, not a measured consensus among ChatGPT users. TechCrunch’s June 25, 2024 report also covered the postponement and attributed the announcement to OpenAI’s official Discord.

Voice-mode context around the delay
OpenAI had introduced voice capabilities in ChatGPT in September 2023. In May 2024, it published an account of how ChatGPT’s voices were chosen amid public scrutiny of the voice named Sky. Sam Altman said: “The voice of Sky is not Scarlett Johansson’s, and it was never intended to resemble hers.” That episode provides context for attention on ChatGPT’s voices, but the available evidence does not connect it causally to the June Advanced Voice Mode delay.
