Older PCs used multiple hard drive partitions to work around limits in file systems and boot firmware, keep operating systems with different requirements apart, and sometimes improve performance on spinning disks. Those problems have mostly changed, not vanished: Windows still uses partitions, and MBR’s capacity limit still matters on systems that use it.
Why did older computers use multiple hard drive partitions?
A partition is a defined area of a physical disk that an operating system can treat as a separate volume. Dividing a disk could make it easier to work within the limits of older software and hardware. The reasons varied by computer and era; they were not four universal rules that applied to every PC.

1. Older file systems struggled with larger volumes
Early file systems and operating systems could not use large volumes as conveniently as modern ones. Microsoft’s overview of FAT, HPFS, and NTFS documents historical FAT partition limits of 2 GB under MS-DOS and 4 GB under Windows NT. It also notes that FAT performance degraded as volume size grew. These were limits of particular file-system and operating-system combinations—not limits inherent to partitioning. Microsoft’s file-system overview covers those historical differences.

Some older PCs had a BIOS restriction that required the bootable partition to start below cylinder 1024. The OS/2 Warp FAQ, dated February 20, 1995, describes keeping a bootable area within that boundary while using another volume for disk space beyond it. That was a restriction of old firmware and addressing assumptions; it should not be applied to modern UEFI systems. The OS/2 Warp FAQ describes the period-specific constraint.

3. Separate volumes helped operating systems coexist
A computer running more than one operating system might need separate bootable areas or file systems that each system could use. Partitioning provided a way to keep those installations and their data apart. Microsoft’s documentation describes the MBR layout as allowing up to four primary partitions, or three primary partitions plus one extended partition containing logical drives. GParted also identifies separate partitions as one way to install multiple operating systems. Microsoft’s MBR partition documentation explains the layout.
4. Disk geometry could affect performance on spinning drives
On a mechanical hard drive, outer tracks can transfer more data per rotation than inner tracks. GParted notes that placing frequently accessed files near the start of a disk could therefore improve throughput. This was a device-specific consideration, not a general benefit of dividing every disk. SSDs have no moving parts, so that HDD placement logic does not apply to them; alignment can still matter for SSD partitions. GParted’s partitioning guide distinguishes the HDD and SSD considerations.

Which partitioning issues still matter today?
MBR’s capacity limit remains relevant when a disk uses MBR
MBR uses 32-bit sector addressing, which reaches about 2.2 TB on disks with 512-byte sectors. Microsoft notes that references to “2 TB” use powers of two and correspond to roughly 2.2 TB in product-labeled capacity. GPT supports much larger addressing. This is a limit of the partition scheme, not a reason to split a modern disk into smaller partitions. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows support for disks larger than 2 TB.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBoot mode and operating-system support must match
In Microsoft’s documented Windows scenario, booting from a GPT-initialized disk requires UEFI-capable firmware. The applicable Windows version and machine configuration matter, so check support for the specific PC and operating system before changing a disk’s partition scheme. Microsoft’s Windows and GPT FAQ describes GPT layouts and boot requirements.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Windows still uses partitions as part of its storage and boot structure
GPT has not made partitions obsolete. Microsoft documents EFI System, Microsoft Reserved, and basic data partitions in Windows UEFI layouts. It also explains that GPT disks use primary and backup partition tables, with CRC32 fields to improve partition-data integrity. Partitions remain a core part of how Windows organizes storage and boots; what has changed is the set of constraints users may need to work around.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does making another partition provide a backup?
No. A second partition on the same physical disk is not an independent backup: disk failure can take both volumes with it. The OS/2 Warp FAQ cautions against separating applications and data solely for backup purposes and notes that reorganizing partitions can require a complete backup and restore. Treat partition layout and backup strategy as separate decisions.

What should you consider before partitioning a disk?
For a present-day setup, decide based on the specific disk, firmware, operating system, and purpose—not on old rules of thumb about partition size. Check these factors first:
Quick Recap
- Partition scheme: MBR has the documented capacity and partition-count constraints; GPT supports larger addressing and is used in Windows UEFI layouts.
- Firmware and boot mode: Confirm whether the computer supports the boot mode required by the operating system and partition scheme.
- Operating system and file system: Confirm that each system can read and boot from the volumes you intend to create.
- Drive type: Mechanical-disk placement considerations do not translate directly to SSDs.
- Recovery plan: Back up important data before changing a partition layout; a partition on the same disk is not a substitute for a separate backup.
