Oganesson is not literally predicted to have no electrons or no shell structure. The striking claim refers to a theoretical calculation in which its outer electrons form an unusually smooth, gas-like distribution, making familiar shell patterns much less distinct. Its conventional electron configuration remains a filled outer shell.
Where oganesson sits—and its conventional configuration
Oganesson (Og) is element 118, in Group 18 and period 7. The Royal Society of Chemistry lists its conventional electron configuration as [Rn] 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p6, with a filled outer 7p subshell. This notation describes how electrons are assigned to orbitals; it does not, by itself, show how sharply localized the calculated electron density appears in space. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s oganesson reference gives the conventional configuration.

What “no electron shells” means in the prediction
In a 2018 theoretical study, Jerabek and colleagues examined electron localization in oganesson. Their analysis predicts that the valence-electron distribution is unusually uniform, with the clear localization patterns familiar from lighter atoms substantially blurred. The calculation describes a gas-like valence region; it does not establish that electrons cease to occupy orbitals or that oganesson has no conventional shell configuration. The 2018 study in Physical Review Letters presents the localization analysis.
Why relativistic effects blur the pattern
Oganesson’s very high nuclear charge makes relativistic effects important to its electronic structure. In the calculation, spin-orbit coupling separates electronic energy levels that would otherwise be treated more similarly. Jerabek and colleagues report a spin-orbit splitting of approximately 10 eV in oganesson’s electronic shell. This substantial change to the valence structure is associated with the smoother localization pattern in their analysis.

These are two ways of describing calculated electrons, not competing experimental results. Orbital configuration notation assigns electrons to states; an electron-localization function represents how strongly electrons are localized in different regions. For oganesson, the first retains a filled outer subshell, while the second predicts less sharply separated shell-like regions.
What is known—and what remains theoretical
Only a few atoms of oganesson have ever been made, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry. Because it is highly radioactive and produced atom by atom, detailed bulk and chemical properties are principally theoretical rather than established through measurements on a macroscopic sample. The shell-smearing result is likewise a prediction from a particular theoretical method, not a direct image of oganesson’s electrons.

A separate 2019 calculation by Mewes and colleagues estimated a 1.5 eV band gap for hypothetical solid oganesson and predicted semiconductor behavior. That value concerns a proposed solid, not a measured bulk sample, and is distinct from the atomic localization result. The 2019 solid-state calculation reports the band-gap prediction.

The accurate shorthand: shells blurred, not absent
“No electron shells” is a dramatic shorthand for a predicted loss of distinct shell-like localization in oganesson’s valence region. It should not be read as a claim that the element has no electrons, or that its conventional configuration has been replaced. The more precise conclusion is that relativistic effects may make oganesson’s outer-electron distribution unusually uniform in the localization analysis.
