Following public criticism, the station ended the AI-hosted show, according to contemporaneous reporting.
What did Off Radio Krakow do?
The Polish station introduced three AI-generated presenters for an experimental program intended to attract younger listeners. This was a program-level experiment, not a replacement of every employee at the station. Futurism reported that the station’s listenership rose from “close to zero” to 8,000 initially; it did not provide a measurement method, and that figure has not been independently verified in the sources available here. Why did the experiment provoke criticism?
Human presenters were replaced
Critics objected to using AI presenters in place of human hosts. Łukasz Zaleski, identified by Futurism as a fired former host, said he was angry that real conversations and interviews had been replaced with something fake. The dispute therefore concerned not just the novelty of synthetic voices, but also what the format meant for human work and for the kind of conversations the program offered.
The Szymborska segment blurred the line between invention and interview
The station also aired an AI-generated “interview” involving Wisława Szymborska, the Polish poet who died in 2012. Futurism reported that both the interviewer and interviewee were AI-generated. It was not a genuine interview or an authentic statement by Szymborska, and the use of her identity prompted a separate concern about presenting fabricated speech in the form of a conversation with a real, deceased person.

Public concern reached beyond the station
Poland’s minister of digitalization, Krzysztof Gawkowski, was quoted by Futurism as saying that, although he supported AI development, he believed boundaries were increasingly being crossed. The OECD.AI incident entry records the station’s decision to end the experiment and the public discussion that followed; its inclusion does not establish that any law was violated. How did the station respond?
After the backlash, Off Radio Krakow ended the AI-hosted show, according to Futurism’s November 2024 account. The station’s editor-in-chief, Mariusz Marcin Pulit, described himself as having been cast as a “job-killing monster” who wanted to replace people with avatars. On the cancellation, he said, “We are pioneers, and the fate of pioneers can be difficult.” Those comments reflect the station’s defense of the experiment; they do not resolve the objections about job displacement or the synthetic Szymborska segment.

What the case does—and does not—show
The episode shows how an AI-media experiment can become a public controversy when synthetic presenters take the place of human hosts and generated content invokes a real person’s identity. It does not establish that the station’s sole motive was cost reduction, that all its staff were replaced, or that the experiment caused a particular financial result. The sources cited here cover the 2024 experiment and its cancellation, not the station’s current programming or any later revival of an AI-host format.
