Why OBS Stops Playing the Next Gaming VOD in a YouTube Stream—and How to Fix It

The fix depends on whether your VODs play through an OBS VLC playlist or YouTube’s player. Identify the source, check its settings, then compare OBS preview with the live output.

First identify how the VOD is being played: an OBS VLC Video playlist and a YouTube player or browser source use different controls, so there is no single confirmed cause. If the next clip fails in OBS’s preview, troubleshoot the source and playlist; if it works in preview but not for viewers, check the outgoing stream’s health.

Identify where the VODs are playing

Check the source in the OBS scene that contains the gaming VOD. The steps depend on which playback route you use:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Playback route Where the sequence is controlled What to check first
OBS VLC Video source The VLC Video source’s playlist and playback settings in OBS Playlist contents and order, loop and shuffle settings, and what happens when the source is hidden
YouTube player in a browser or browser source YouTube’s player on the device where playback is controlled Autoplay on that player and device
Another OBS media source That source’s own controls Do not assume VLC playlist options apply

OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes VLC Video as a playlist-capable source. YouTube’s Autoplay help covers the player setting and notes that it can differ across devices.

If you use an OBS VLC Video playlist

Confirm the playlist and its order

  1. In OBS, open the scene containing the gaming VOD source and select the VLC Video source.
  2. Open the source’s properties and check that every intended clip appears in the playlist and that the order is correct.
  3. Turn off Shuffle Playlist if clips must play in a fixed order. OBS documents shuffle as off by default.
  4. Choose whether Loop Playlist should be on. OBS documents looping as on by default; looping controls what happens at the end of the playlist, not whether a missing or unavailable next item can play.

These default settings are described on OBS’s Media Sources page, dated January 11, 2022. The interface may have changed in later OBS versions.

Check what happens when the source is hidden

A scene transition can hide a VLC Video source. OBS documents the default Visibility Behaviour as “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If the source becomes hidden as one VOD ends or while scenes change, it may stop and restart rather than continuing through the playlist.

In the source’s properties, inspect Visibility Behaviour. If the VOD should continue while another scene is active, choose a behavior that keeps playback running while the source is invisible. If you want playback to pause when hidden and resume when shown, choose the pause/resume behavior instead. The available choice names can vary with OBS versions.

Check the VLC installation only if the source is unavailable

OBS says VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear as a source, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This is relevant if the VLC Video source is missing or unavailable; it does not establish that installing VLC fixes a source that already appears but fails to advance.

If you use YouTube’s player or a browser source

Check Autoplay in the YouTube player actually controlling the sequence. A setting enabled on a phone does not show that it is enabled on the computer or player used for the stream. YouTube says autoplay settings can differ by device.

If the source is a browser page inside OBS, determine whether the playback is controlled by YouTube’s embedded player or by the page. The YouTube Autoplay control applies when that player exposes and uses it; do not look for OBS VLC playlist settings on a browser source.

Use OBS preview to separate playback from delivery

  1. Watch the local OBS preview as the current VOD ends. Note whether the next item appears, stays black, freezes on the previous frame, or does not start.
  2. Compare that moment with the live YouTube output, if available. If the next item advances in preview but viewers do not see it, investigate stream health and connection diagnostics rather than treating it as a playlist failure.
  3. Check OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator. OBS’s Help Portal explains that an increasing “Dropped frames” counter with a yellow or red connection square points to an unstable connection to the streaming-service server or a connection that cannot keep up with the set bitrate.

This preview comparison is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular cause. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection-to-service issue; that is distinct from whether a source’s playlist advances. See the OBS Help Portal.

What to record if it still fails

  • OBS version and operating system.
  • Exact source type: VLC Video, browser source, or another media source.
  • Whether the current VOD finishes, and whether the next item is missing, black, frozen, or playing audio only.
  • Playlist item types and order, plus loop and shuffle settings.
  • Whether the source is hidden or its scene changes near the failure.
  • Whether the problem appears in OBS preview, the live output, or both.

These details make a support request more useful. OBS directs users who need help to its support resources; the available documentation does not establish a current bug specific to this exact symptom.

A historical VLC playlist report is not a current diagnosis

OBS Studio issue #3410, opened September 4, 2020, describes a narrow mixed audio/video VLC playlist problem on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Build 19041 with OBS 25.0.8 and 26.0.0-rc1. The reporter said that after a video ended or “Next in Playlist” was pressed, the video frame could remain while the next audio item played, with audio-monitoring irregularities. That old user report is not evidence of a current general fault, and it does not establish the cause of a sequence of YouTube gaming VODs.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded gaming VODs looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos, not camera footage, and runs without a computer or home connection staying on.

  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
