OBS skipping or freezing on only some playlist entries does not point to one known universal cause. First confirm whether the source is VLC Video or Media Source, then test the affected file outside OBS and compare it with one that plays correctly in the same source. The phrase “YouTube playlist” can mean different things: the troubleshooting below covers media files played by an OBS source, not OBS reading a YouTube playlist.
First, identify what OBS is playing
OBS offers both a built-in Media Source and a VLC Video source. VLC Video uses VLC libraries and supports playlists; the Media Source is a separate source type. Open the source properties and note its exact name before changing settings. The distinction matters because a VLC Video source depends on a separate VLC installation, while the built-in Media Source follows its own format support. OBS’s media-source documentation describes these source types.

If it is VLC Video
Check that VLC is installed. OBS’s documentation specifies that a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. If OBS cannot use the VLC libraries, the source may be unavailable or behave differently than expected. Confirm both application versions and their architectures before treating the playlist entries themselves as the cause.
If it is Media Source
Check that the source points to the intended file and review its playback options. A list of supported file extensions is not a guarantee that every file with that extension is valid or decodable on your system. Container and codec compatibility also matter; see OBS’s format guide.

Isolate the file before changing the playlist
- Play the problem entry outside OBS. Confirm it opens and plays through the point where OBS skips or freezes. If it fails in another player too, check for an incomplete, damaged, or malformed file before troubleshooting OBS.
- Compare it with a known-good entry. Add or play both through the same OBS source, under the same conditions. Note whether the affected files share an extension, encoding, audio/video mix, or network location.
- Test one file by itself. Temporarily remove other playlist entries or use a separate test source. If the problem follows one file, investigate that file and its encoding; if it appears only in a multi-entry playlist, focus on transitions and playlist behavior.
- Record the exact symptom. Note whether the item is skipped at its start or end, whether the video freezes while audio continues, and whether the interruption appears in an OBS recording or stream.
An OBS issue report used an invalid MP4 in a VLC-source crash reproduction. That shows an invalid entry can matter in a reported scenario; it does not establish that file corruption explains every skip or freeze. The OBS issue tracker is useful for checking symptom-specific reports, but reports are not proof of a current universal defect.
Check playlist, visibility, and network behavior
In VLC Video source properties, review the playlist and the available behavior controls: loop, shuffle, what happens when the source becomes hidden, and network caching. The hidden-source choices include stopping and restarting, pausing and resuming, or always playing. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether it affected the symptom.

- If the source fails when a scene changes or the source is hidden, test the visibility behavior separately.
- If only network-hosted entries fail while local files work, treat network playback as a separate branch and note which URLs are affected.
- Do not assume increasing network caching will fix a local-file stall. OBS exposes a caching control, but its documentation does not describe it as a universal fix.
Use the symptom to narrow the cause
MP3 entries lose a little audio at item boundaries
A report filed against OBS 29.1.3 on Windows 10 described MP3 playlist items losing about a second at the beginning and end. That is a specific historical report, not confirmation that current OBS versions or all MP3 playlists have the same bug. Compare the boundary behavior in a recording and check your own OBS version before drawing that conclusion. See OBS issue reports.
Video freezes but audio keeps playing
An older report about mixed audio and video entries in VLC Video described a frozen video frame while audio continued. Use that distinction to characterize the failure, but keep the report’s older-version context in mind; it does not establish a current issue across OBS releases. Only local monitoring sounds delayed or skips
A macOS 12 report involving OBS 28.0.3 described delayed VLC controls and audio monitoring. A project member said the recording captured skips correctly while monitored audio was buffered; the issue was closed in July 2023. Check whether the same problem is present in the recording or stream before concluding that the media itself is skipping. This report does not establish that current macOS versions share the issue. When another playlist source is worth investigating
If you have confirmed that VLC Video is the failure point and the individual media files play properly, an alternative may be worth testing. The OBS forum lists a third-party Media Playlist Source plugin that uses Media Source internally, describes support for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and gives OBS 30.0.0 as its minimum version. That listing does not establish that the plugin fixes a particular skip or freeze. Before installing it, check its current maintenance status and compatibility with your OBS version. What to include when asking for diagnosis
- The operating system and OBS version; if using VLC Video, the VLC version and whether its architecture matches OBS.
- The source type shown in OBS: VLC Video or Media Source.
- The failing file’s extension and, if known, its container and encoding; say whether the file plays completely outside OBS.
- Whether affected entries are local files, network URLs, audio-only, video, or a mix.
- Whether audio continues during a video freeze, and whether the issue appears in a recording or stream or only in preview/monitoring.
- Whether it happens after hiding the source or changing scenes, and whether loop or shuffle is enabled.
- An OBS log from a session in which the failure occurs, plus steps that reproduce it.
