If NYT Strands will not load, first check whether you’re playing in the NYT Games app or a browser, then confirm you’re signed into the New York Times account you use for Games. The fix depends on the platform: app problems call for updates and a fresh login, while browser login problems may involve cookies or cached data. Progress played while signed out is stored locally on that device, not on your account.
Why won’t NYT Strands load?
A loading problem does not by itself prove Strands is down. The New York Times Help Center’s general guidance covers app usability and account access; it does not identify a specific Strands outage or a single cause for Strands failing to load. Start with the steps for the platform you’re using.

If you’re playing in the NYT Games app
- Update the NYT Games app through your device’s app store, then install any available operating-system update in the device settings.
- Force quit NYT Games, reopen it, and try Strands again.
- Log out of your New York Times account in the app and log back in. Make sure it is the account associated with your Games activity.
- If Strands still will not load, uninstall and reinstall the app. NYT says reinstalling will not affect Games streaks or statistics.
- If the issue remains, report it in the app. On iOS, choose Report a Bug in Settings; on Android, choose Send App Feedback. Include your device and app version, what happens when you open Strands, and whether other games are affected. These are the steps in NYT’s mobile app troubleshooting guidance.
If you’re playing in a browser
- Check that your browser accepts cookies. NYT says cookies are required to access an account on nytimes.com.
- If you cannot log in, clear the browser cache and cookies, then try again. Stored browser information can be outdated or interfere with login attempts.
- Check that you are using the right email address and password. If your account is linked to Google, Facebook, or Apple, try signing in with that linked option. Reset your password if needed.
- If a password manager is filling in the wrong details, temporarily turn off its browser extension or built-in autofill and retry.
These browser checks come from the NYT Help Center’s login troubleshooting guidance.

Isolate the problem before changing more settings
- See whether other NYT Games load in the same app or browser. If they do, note that Strands is the only game affected; it helps describe the problem but does not establish its cause.
- If available, compare Strands in the app and a browser, or on another device. Note whether the same account is signed in for each test.
- Record the exact error message or whether the screen stays blank or loading, along with the platform and app, operating-system, or browser version. Include whether you were signed in when reporting an unresolved app issue.
Why isn’t Strands saving my progress?
The key distinction is whether you were signed in. The New York Times Help Center says: “If you are not logged into your account, all of your game progress will be stored locally on your device and not on your account which can cause you to lose your progress.” When you sign in, NYT says you can access saved progress, statistics, and streaks across devices and browsers. See its New York Times Games Subscription article for this account and progress distinction.
#1 Best Overall
| How you played | Where NYT says progress is stored or available | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Signed out | Locally on the device | Progress is not on your account, so it may not be available on another device or browser. |
| Signed in | Available through your New York Times account across devices and browsers | Sign in to the same account on the other device or browser to access saved progress, statistics, and streaks. |
If progress appears missing, first sign into the account you normally use for NYT Games. If you were playing signed out, check the original device and browser or app. NYT’s cited guidance does not describe a guaranteed way to recover local progress after browser data is cleared or the app is removed; do not clear data or switch devices while relying on signed-out local progress.
How do I get Strands to sync between devices?
Sign into the same New York Times account on each device or browser. NYT states: “To play across multiple devices and web browsers, log in to your New York Times account.” If one device does not show the expected progress, verify that it is signed in to the same account used on the device where you played. The NYT Games app is available alongside browser play for many games; its app information is in the NYT Games app help article.
Why did I lose my Strands progress?
If you were signed out, NYT says the game kept progress locally rather than on your account. That explains why progress may not follow you to a different device or browser. If you were signed in, check that the device showing missing progress is using the same New York Times account as the one where you played.

NYT’s mobile app troubleshooting instructions say uninstalling and reinstalling will not affect Games streaks or statistics. Try the software-update, force-quit, and sign-out/sign-in steps first; reinstall only if those do not resolve the app problem.
