Why NYT Connections Answers Can Seem Ambiguous—and How to Check Your Reasoning

A plausible connection is only a hypothesis. Here is a whole-board method for checking exact categories, spotting wordplay, handling near misses, and understanding why one complete solution can coexist with several tempting associations.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connections can reject a group that looks perfectly reasonable because a valid association is not necessarily one of the puzzle’s four intended categories. The New York Times says every board has exactly one complete solution, while deliberately including words that appear to fit more than one category. The practical response is to test a proposed group against the entire 16-word board, not just the four words that caught your eye.

That distinction explains the familiar experience of thinking, “All four fit,” and still receiving a wrong answer. Your connection may be real, but it can be broader, less precise, or less compatible with the remaining words than the editor’s intended connection.

What Connections is actually asking you to solve

Each Connections puzzle presents 16 words. Your job is to divide them into four groups of four, with every word used exactly once. The New York Times Help Center states that each puzzle has one solution and is designed to be tricky because words can appear to fit multiple categories.

The phrase “one solution” applies to the complete four-group arrangement. It does not mean that only one pair of words can be related, or that a rejected group is meaningless. You can discover several genuine relationships on a board; only one set of four groups satisfies the editor’s intended structure.

The categories are curated by editors using the Oxford Dictionary. They may be ordinary semantic sets, such as fish, or language-pattern sets, such as words that start with FIRE. Consequently, the game is not limited to finding synonyms. A group can depend on a shared meaning, spelling, pronunciation, word beginning, grammatical role, cultural reference, or another deliberate pattern.

What the colors tell you

The four colors indicate relative difficulty. Yellow is the easiest category and purple is the trickiest, with the other two colors between them. The Help Center does not say that a particular color guarantees a semantic category, a wordplay category, or any other format. Treat color as a difficulty signal, not as evidence that a group must be a certain kind of connection.

Why a sensible group can still be wrong

A broad label can hide several different rules

Suppose four words all remind you of travel. “Travel” is an observation, not yet a usable category. It could refer to vehicles, destinations, verbs, airline terminology, or a title containing the words. A good category states the relationship narrowly enough that another person could apply it consistently without guessing what you meant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Things associated with travel” is therefore weaker than a precise rule such as “words that can follow a particular term,” provided every selected word meets that exact rule. The broader label leaves room for distractors and makes it easier to overlook a more specific group elsewhere on the board.

Words can carry more than one sense

Editors can select a word that works literally in one category and idiomatically in another. A word may also function as a noun in one group and a verb in another, or have an everyday meaning that competes with a specialized one. Seeing one of those meanings is useful, but it does not establish that the meaning is intended.

Wordplay competes with meaning

The official examples make this especially important: a category may be a conventional group such as fish, or a construction such as words beginning with FIRE. If you search only for shared subject matter, you can miss a spelling or phrase pattern that explains four words more exactly. Conversely, a visual or spelling resemblance may be accidental when the board is pointing to a semantic group.

The other 12 words are part of the test

A candidate group is not evaluated in isolation. Once you remove four words, the remaining 12 must still divide cleanly into three groups. A proposed set that leaves an awkward residue is weaker than one that creates three clear, independent categories. This is why Connections can feel unfair at the moment of a mistake: your four words may fit, but they may prevent the rest of the board from reaching the single complete arrangement.

How to check a candidate group before submitting it

Use this as a verification routine rather than a guarantee. The game’s design intentionally preserves uncertainty, so no method can promise certainty before every guess.

  1. State the connection in one specific phrase. Write or say the rule as if you were explaining it to another solver. Avoid a label so broad that it could describe half the board.
  2. Test all four words against the same rule. Do not silently switch meanings, parts of speech, pronunciation, or spelling from one word to the next. If one item needs an exception, an obscure sense, or a different interpretation, mark that as a warning.
  3. Check the exact wording. Ask whether the category depends on a prefix, suffix, shared following word, shared preceding word, singular form, plural form, or another precise feature. “They feel related” is not the same as “they obey the same construction.”
  4. Inspect every unselected word. Look for a competing group that uses three of your choices, or for a cleaner version of your proposed category using a different word. A near-duplicate is often the intended trap.
  5. Search for both meanings and language patterns. After finding a semantic idea, deliberately scan for spelling, pronunciation, word-start, word-end, or phrase-completion patterns. The reverse check matters too: a visual pattern should be tested against possible meanings.
  6. Mentally solve the remainder. Remove your four words and see whether the other 12 can form three groups of four without forcing another broad label. If the residue contains two nearly identical possibilities, delay the guess and investigate which choice makes the whole board more precise.
  7. Use color only as a difficulty clue. A yellow-looking group may be an accessible entry point, while a purple-looking group may require a less obvious interpretation. Color does not prove that your category is semantic or wordplay-based.

A quick pre-submission checklist

  • Can you express the category as one short, exact rule?
  • Does every word fit the same sense and grammatical treatment?
  • Does another unselected word fit as well or better?
  • Does the proposed group leave three coherent groups behind?
  • Have you checked for a spelling or phrase pattern as well as a meaning?

What a wrong guess tells you

A rejected submission proves only that the four-word set was not one of the intended groups in that arrangement. It does not prove that your association was false. Preserve the useful part of the idea, then identify which assumption failed.

If three words still look strong

Keep the three as a provisional cluster, but reopen the fourth word. The fourth may be a deliberate distractor that shares the broad association while belonging to a more exact category with another word. Do not automatically replace it with the first remaining word that feels similar; rerun the whole-board check.

If the category was too broad

Replace the umbrella label with a rule that describes form or function. For example, instead of “things connected with a profession,” ask whether the words are job titles, tools, abbreviations, words that follow a particular term, or words that begin with the same sequence. A narrower rule makes competing candidates visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you found a real wordplay pattern

Confirm that all four items participate in the same pattern, not merely that each can be transformed somehow. Wordplay categories are often exact: the same beginning, ending, insertion, deletion, or phrase relationship must apply consistently.

Solving approaches: what each one is good for

Fast intuition is useful for generating candidate groups. It surfaces familiar semantic clusters quickly, but it is vulnerable to the cross-category associations that the puzzle is designed to create.

Specific-label solving converts an impression into a testable rule. It takes longer than an initial hunch but exposes the word that does not fit and makes it easier to compare rival groups.

Elimination from the remainder is strongest after you have a plausible group. Removing four words and analyzing the remaining board prevents you from treating an attractive cluster as independent of the rest of the puzzle.

Wordplay scanning is essential when ordinary meanings produce several overlapping groups. Check prefixes, suffixes, shared completions, and other language mechanics instead of assuming every category names a subject.

Color-led solving can help you decide where to spend attention, but it should not determine the category type. The official documentation describes difficulty order, not a color-to-format code.

What the published experiment shows—and what it does not

A paper titled “NYT-Connections: A Deceptively Simple Text Classification Task that Stumps System-1 Thinkers,” published in the Association for Computational Linguistics’ COLING 2025 proceedings, examined a dataset of 100 puzzles with a median difficulty rating of 3.0. It compared six language models, a heuristic, and human evaluators under three conditions. The human evaluation used three evaluators.

The paper’s input-output results table reports these human scores:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Condition Human result What the condition means
One try 39.33% Evaluators had a single attempt.
Up to four tries, no hints 56.0% Evaluators could submit as many as four attempts without contextual assistance.
Up to four tries, with contextual hints 60.67% The hint indicated when a guess was one word away from a correct grouping.

These percentages describe that bounded experiment, not the odds for all Connections players, every puzzle, or any one individual. The sample was limited, the prompting methods had acknowledged constraints, and the paper evaluated particular systems and participants. Its useful lesson is narrower: even people solving a relatively small set of puzzles can be tripped up by plausible but incomplete patterns, and feedback about a near miss can improve performance in the tested setup. The results do not establish that Connections measures one general reasoning ability.

A repeatable whole-board workflow

First pass: collect possibilities without committing

Scan all 16 words and note obvious pairs or triples. At this stage, treat every idea as a hypothesis. Do not lock in a group merely because it is the first one you see; early commitment can make later words appear to fit by force.

Second pass: turn the strongest idea into a rule

Choose the candidate with the clearest, narrowest explanation. State exactly what the words share and test each item under identical conditions. If the rule changes halfway through, return the group to the hypothesis list rather than submitting it.

Third pass: challenge the candidate

Search the unselected words for a cleaner member of the same category and test alternate interpretations of the selected words. Then remove the group mentally and attempt to identify the remaining three categories. A group earns confidence by improving the entire partition, not by being memorable on its own.

Fourth pass: reserve the hardest ambiguity for last

When two candidates overlap, keep both visible and solve around them. Clear groups among the other words may reveal which member belongs where. This is more reliable than repeatedly submitting the same broad category with a different fourth word.

After a miss: update one assumption at a time

Record which word was least exact, which sense you used, and whether the leftover board became incoherent. Change that assumption first. Rebuilding every category from scratch can discard useful evidence; changing nothing simply repeats the same trap.

Common reasoning traps and their fixes

“All four are associated with the same topic”

Problem: Topic association is often too broad and may include a distractor.

Fix: Name the exact relationship—such as a shared form, phrase position, or dictionary sense—and verify it word by word.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The word has only the meaning I noticed”

Problem: Polysemy allows the same word to serve different categories.

Fix: List the plausible senses of the contested word and see which one produces a cleaner complete board.

“A category must be semantic”

Problem: The official rules explicitly include wordplay categories.

Fix: Run a language-pattern scan whenever semantic groups overlap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Purple means a particular kind of trick”

Problem: The colors communicate relative difficulty, not a guaranteed category format.

Fix: Use the color to set expectations about difficulty, then judge the group by its wording and board-wide fit.

“A near miss proves the whole idea was wrong”

Problem: One distractor can invalidate an otherwise meaningful association.

Fix: Keep the rule as a hypothesis, isolate the weakest word, and test alternatives against the remaining 12 words.

The practical standard for a confident answer

You do not need to show that no other relationship exists; the puzzle itself is built around overlapping relationships. You need the strongest complete explanation available on the board: one precise rule for each group, four consistent words per rule, and no leftover arrangement that is more coherent.

When Connections says you are wrong despite a sensible connection, read the result as a constraint on the full partition, not a verdict on your vocabulary. Tighten the category, test every word under the same rule, inspect the unselected words, and check for wordplay. That process turns an apparently ambiguous answer into a solvable comparison between competing hypotheses.
