Why Nova Minerals Is Moving Toward Antimony Plant Construction in Alaska

Nova Minerals aims to link antimony feed from Estelle with processing and refining at Port MacKenzie. Equipment had arrived by October 2026, but facility construction still depended on remaining permits.

Nova Minerals says it is advancing an Alaska antimony project to build a domestic, vertically integrated U.S. supply chain—from mine feed at its Estelle project to processing and refining at Port MacKenzie. The company cites a US$43.4 million U.S. Department of War award and U.S. defense-supply priorities as support for the plan. As of October 8, 2026, key equipment had arrived and early earthworks were underway, but construction of the processing and refinery facility was still conditional on remaining permits.

Why Nova says it is advancing the plant

Nova’s stated goal is to connect antimony mining, processing and refining in Alaska rather than rely solely on imported material. Its July 2026 announcement described the project as an integrated U.S. supply chain and cited a US$43.4 million Department of War award, announced in October 2025, to support development of an antimony mine at Estelle and a downstream refinery at Port MacKenzie. Nova also says the project responds to U.S. defense and critical-minerals sourcing priorities. The company’s July statement links the initiative to a July 20, 2026 executive order that it says emphasizes domestic or trusted-allied sources and traceability for military equipment and critical materials. Nova describes the United States as heavily reliant on imports of antimony; that is the company’s characterization, not an independently established import statistic here. CEO Christopher Gerteisen said the order “reflects the direction of U.S. policy on critical minerals sourcing that has informed our work at the Estelle Gold and Critical Minerals Project and our planned processing infrastructure at Port MacKenzie.”

The policy rationale explains why Nova presents the project as strategically important. It does not establish that the plant will secure customers, be profitable, or be completed, and the award should not be read as a guarantee of those outcomes.

How the Alaska project is intended to work

The planned operation has two locations with different roles. Estelle is the proposed source of stibnite-bearing feed; Port MacKenzie is the planned downstream processing and refining site. Nova’s July 13, 2026 engineering announcement describes the pilot design as follows. Nova’s July 13 engineering announcement

Location Planned role Processes described by Nova
Whiskey Bravo, at Estelle Mine-side feed preparation Crushing, screening, ore sorting, concentrate storage and load-out
Port MacKenzie Downstream processing and refining Further crushing and screening, sorting, beneficiation, refining, product recovery, and associated utilities, reagents, infrastructure and logistics

Nova says the planned refining stage would use a proprietary hydrometallurgical method to produce antimony trisulfide, which would then be filtered, dried and bagged. The company has described a modular design that could later be expanded with additional circuits for antimony trioxide and antimony metal; those are potential future products, not products the pilot is currently making.

The company’s May 2026 update said work on an onsite crushing and ore-sorting facility was underway, with equipment delivered and completion targeted for the 2026 Alaskan summer. Its October update separately reported access-road and airstrip work at Estelle. Those mine-site activities are distinct from construction of the Port MacKenzie processing and refinery facility.

What has happened—and what still has to happen

Nova’s October 8, 2026 announcement said all remaining key equipment for the planned processing and refinery operation had arrived at Port MacKenzie on October 6. The shipment included two ball mills, a jaw crusher, an apron feeder, hydraulic filter presses and ancillary equipment. A previous shipment of 500 tons had arrived on September 6, according to the same update. The company reported early earthworks underway and said facility construction could start in the coming weeks, subject to receipt of remaining permits. Nova’s October 8, 2026 announcement

  • Metal boron block is a widely used chemical raw material mineral, mainly used for the production of borax, boric acid, various compounds of boron, and elemental boron.
  • Reported complete: delivery of the final key equipment to Port MacKenzie.
  • Reported underway: early earthworks.
  • Still conditional: commencement of construction of the processing and refinery facility, because remaining permits were outstanding.
  • Not established by the update: facility operation or achieved production.

At Estelle, the October update also reported the close of the 2026 field season after about 8,000 metres of diamond drilling focused on the RPM gold deposit. Samples and core had been sent for analysis, with results expected later. Nova said its Stibium and Styx antimony prospects were progressing toward potential resource delineation and production. These statements do not establish a defined antimony resource or demonstrate reserves available to feed the plant.

What the test result does—and does not—show

In an October 2025 announcement, Nova reported that a 500-kilogram Styx sample test recovered 60.3% of the antimony in 26.1% of the sample mass, increasing feed grade from 15.2% to 35.2% Sb in a single pass. Nova’s October 2025 test announcement

This is a company-reported result from a small sample test, not a plant-scale recovery guarantee or proof of commercial economics. Nova also said it acquired equipment from a recently decommissioned North American beneficiation circuit, which it expected would reduce lead times and improve capital efficiency. Those are company expectations, not independently demonstrated cost or schedule outcomes.

How to read the production timeline

Nova’s announcements refer to near-term production and a 2026/2027 timeframe as targets or forward-looking plans. The October 2026 update establishes progress on equipment delivery and site preparation, not a completed permit set, a finished facility, or production. Nova’s July engineering announcement quoted Gerteisen saying ore extraction and process-plant construction were next steps; that remains a statement of intended sequencing rather than evidence those steps are complete.

The announcements reviewed do not establish a production volume, binding customer contract, independently verified demand forecast, or completed permits. A reader can therefore understand the strategic reason for advancing the project and its reported readiness, but cannot infer from these updates alone that it will reach commercial production on schedule or prove economically viable.
