If Netflix looks too dark on your computer, first check whether the dimness affects only Netflix or also the desktop and other video apps. When the problem appears across an HDR display, the balance between HDR and SDR brightness is a likely place to start. When only Netflix is affected, check whether your computer, display, browser, and connection meet Netflix’s requirements for the kind of playback you expect.
First find out whether Netflix is the only thing that looks dark
Compare the same display with the desktop and another video app. If those look dim too, focus first on the display’s brightness and HDR/SDR settings. If Netflix alone looks dark, try the same scene in another supported browser or Netflix playback route, changing one thing at a time. That helps distinguish a Netflix-specific playback issue from a display-wide setting.

HDR and SDR are different types of video signal, and Windows says their relative appearance varies by display model. Microsoft notes that “Some SDR apps appear darker on an HDR display compared to other SDR apps shown on the same display.” See Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAdjust HDR and SDR brightness in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display and select the HDR-capable display you are watching on.
- Open HDR and adjust the SDR content brightness or HDR content brightness control, as available, until the picture looks balanced.
- Reopen Netflix or restart its browser or app if the image does not change. Microsoft notes that some apps need to be restarted for display-setting changes to take effect.
If you use an external monitor, check that HDR is enabled in both Windows and the monitor’s own menu. Microsoft documents that HDR is not supported in duplicate mode in the scenario described in its guidance; extend the desktop if you want HDR on the external display. Also check Windows’ HDR options when streaming on battery: plugging in or allowing HDR video streaming on battery can keep HDR available, depending on the setting.

Check that your Windows setup qualifies for Netflix HDR
Adjusting brightness will not make an unsupported setup play Netflix in HDR. Netflix lists these requirements for HDR playback on Windows:

- Windows 11 with current updates.
- A Netflix plan that supports HDR and playback quality set to Auto or High.
- A supported browser or the Netflix Windows app, plus compatible graphics.
- An HDR-capable display with HDR enabled. Every active display must meet Netflix’s requirements.
Netflix lists Microsoft Edge and the Windows app for playback up to UHD with HDR when the system requirements are met. Browser support and maximum resolution vary: Netflix’s supported browser requirements list Edge 118+ and Chrome 117+ for up to UHD, while Firefox 129+ and Opera 92+ are listed for up to Full HD. Those minimum versions can change, so check Netflix’s current table if your browser is older or resolution is also a concern. HDR eligibility is not the same as a guarantee that the picture will look bright on every display.

On a Mac, check HDR, Safari, and battery video settings
Netflix’s listed Mac HDR setup requires the latest Safari, a compatible Mac and HDR-capable display, and macOS Catalina 10.15.4 or later. HDR must be enabled in Display settings—using the Apple XDR Display preset or the High Dynamic Range checkbox, depending on the display. Turn off Optimize video streaming while on battery if it is enabled. Any cable or adapter used with an external screen must support HDR.
Netflix’s Mac UHD requirements are separate from its HDR checklist: the listed configuration calls for an Apple processor or Apple T2 Security chip, a built-in UHD-capable display, macOS Big Sur 11.0 or later, the latest Safari, a supported plan, playback quality set to Auto or High, and a steady connection of at least 15 megabits per second. For UHD on an external display, Netflix lists 4K resolution, at least 60 Hz, and an HDCP 2.2-rated video cable. Meeting UHD requirements alone does not resolve a brightness problem. See Netflix’s Mac HDR and UHD requirements.

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
When an external cable or display is relevant
A cable is worth investigating only if you watch on an external display and the existing connection does not meet the requirements for the playback mode you want. Netflix specifies an HDR-capable cable or adapter for Mac HDR, and an HDCP 2.2-rated video cable for Mac UHD over an external display. Replacing a cable is not a general fix for a dim picture; first check display settings and compatibility.
Netflix’s device requirements explain the applicable Mac connection specifications. For Windows, Microsoft also recommends checking graphics drivers and, when supported, using DisplayPort rather than HDMI for an external HDR display.

Use device controls rather than a universal Netflix brightness fix
Netflix’s dark-picture guidance points readers to brightness and HDR controls on their device; it does not give computer-specific steps or document a browser brightness slider. On Windows, use the system HDR controls. On a Mac, check Display and Battery settings. For monitor controls, follow the display maker’s instructions.
There is no evidence here for disabling HDR on every computer, changing browser hardware acceleration, or buying a brighter monitor as a blanket fix. Match the adjustment to the symptom: display-wide dimness points to display settings, while Netflix-only dimness calls for checking the playback route and Netflix compatibility requirements.
If Netflix is still too dark
- Record whether the dimness affects Netflix alone or other content too.
- Note your operating system, browser or Netflix app, display model, and whether HDR is enabled.
- If you use an external display, note whether the desktop is mirrored or extended and which cable or adapter connects it.
- Change one setting at a time, then replay the same scene so you can tell whether that change helped.
These details narrow down which device-specific setting or compatibility requirement to check next.
