Triple quotes allow a string to span physical lines, but they do not turn off escape processing. If your patch generator must emit the two source characters backslash and `n`, write `\n` in the ordinary string that constructs the patch, or use a suitable raw string. Then inspect the generated text before applying it.
Without the patch-building code and its intended output, the escape sequence is a plausible cause—not a confirmed diagnosis. The right fix depends on whether the generated file should contain the characters `n` or an actual line break.

What Python does with `n` in triple quotes
Python parses string literals according to their prefixes and contents. In an ordinary, non-raw string, `n` is an escape sequence for a line-feed character (ASCII LF). Triple-quoted strings can include physical line breaks, and those unescaped line breaks are retained in the resulting string. But triple quotes do not disable escapes: `n` inside a triple-quoted ordinary string is still interpreted.

For example, the value of this string contains a line break at the escape sequence:
#1 Best Overall
patch = """first linensecond line"""
If a patch generator is meant to write Python source containing the literal characters `n`, this string has already converted them into a line break before the patch is emitted.
Choose the fix based on the intended output
To emit the literal characters backslash and n
Double the backslash in the ordinary string that constructs the patch:
Rank #2
patch = """generated_source = 'first line\nsecond line'"""

The outer string parser turns `\` into one backslash in the resulting patch text. The generated source can then contain `n` for Python to interpret when that source is later run.
To emit a real line break
Include the newline intentionally in the generated text. A physical line break in a triple-quoted string is retained; alternatively, an escape in the outer string can create a line-feed in its value. Check that the resulting patch has the line break in the right place and that the generated source remains syntactically valid.
When a raw string is clearer
A raw string such as r'n' preserves the backslash-n pair instead of interpreting it as a newline. Raw strings still have quoting constraints: the closing quote cannot be escaped in the usual way, and a raw string cannot end with an odd number of backslashes. Use one only when the complete literal can be represented safely and readably.
Debug the patch as two separate layers
Patch generation has at least two relevant representations: the value of the Python string in the patch script, and the text or diff that the script emits. An escape may be consumed while Python builds the first value, even though the emitted file needs those characters preserved. Work from the outermost Python literal inward and write down what each layer should contain.

Specify whether the generated file needs a backslash followed by `n`, or a line-feed character.
- Account for the outer literal. In an ordinary string constructing source text, use `\n` to produce the literal `n` pair. Consider a raw string only if its quoting rules fit the whole literal.
- Inspect the generated value or diff. Print or otherwise examine the patch text before applying it. Check the exact characters around the changed line rather than relying on how a terminal or editor displays them.
- Compare with expected text. Use a small representative input and compare the generated string or diff with the exact output you intended.
These checks address the escape-processing explanation, but they do not prove it was the cause of a particular silent patch failure. If the generated text is correct, investigate the patch application and its matching or targeting logic separately.
