Checkerboard markings are not a standard requirement for rockets. Older black-and-white roll patterns helped ground observers see a vehicle rotate; today, markings are chosen for the cameras and measurements needed for a particular rocket and mission. Some modern rockets still use checkerboards—including NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS)—alongside other optical targets.
What the old checkerboard pattern was for
Early V-2 prototypes carried a black-and-white roll pattern so observers on the ground could tell how the rocket was oriented as it flew. As different parts of a vehicle separated, visible markings also helped engineers observe how those stages behaved. NASA’s historical account connects this tradition to Saturn rockets, whose stripes prompted questions about their purpose: NASA’s account of rocket roll patterns.

The pattern was useful because changes in which stripes or blocks could be seen made rotation easier to recognize. It was a visual aid, not simply decoration—but that does not mean every rocket needed the same layout.
Why modern markings are designed around cameras
NASA uses markings on SLS as photogrammetric targets: cameras capture them, and image analysis uses their positions across frames to measure vehicle motion and relative position. The goal is to study specific events, such as liftoff, booster separation, and clearances between parts of the rocket—not merely to show whether the vehicle is rolling.

As Beth St. Peter, imagery integration team lead at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, explained: “Each marking has a specific purpose. In general, the markings are used to precisely measure motion during dynamic events during liftoff and separation.” NASA’s description of imagery for Artemis I explains how teams use the targets and camera views.
Shape and contrast help locate a target
High-contrast black-and-white shapes give image-analysis software clear edges to find. Squares and rectangles can provide crisp pixel boundaries, making it easier to identify a reference point consistently across frames and camera views. Depending on the measurement, the targets may be squares, circles, elongated marks, or crosshair-like arrangements rather than a large, continuous checkerboard.

Placement depends on the view and the event
A target only helps if a camera can see it from the angle and distance needed. NASA describes targets used with ground cameras, vehicle-mounted cameras, and cameras that observe parts of the rocket from inside. Some are arranged so visible points form triangles that help track motion. The locations also have to suit the environment: propellant cold and launch heat can affect whether a marking is practical.

For low-light separation observations, painted contrast may not be the best option. NASA describes retroreflectors that send light back toward an onboard camera, providing a way to observe targets without relying on ordinary black-and-white paint.

Modern rockets can still have checkerboards
“Modern rockets don’t have checkerboards” is too broad. NASA’s SLS uses checkerboard markings as well as other shapes and optical targets. The 2022 SLS Reference Guide gives a marking-size range from 0.2 inches to 3 by 3 feet. That range reflects targets intended for different views and measurements, not one uniform pattern applied across the vehicle.
NASA’s earlier SLS imagery account describes targets on the boosters, core stage, interim cryogenic propulsion stage, Orion stage adapter, spacecraft adapter, and mobile launcher, including some inside the vehicle. The variety illustrates the point: engineers select marks for the surfaces, cameras, and events they need to measure.

- BUILD IT. COUNT DOWN. LAUNCH IT 10 FEET: Kids build their own realistic rocket and durable launcher from precision-cut wooden parts — then press the red launch button and watch it blast up to 10 feet into the air. No batteries, no electricity — pure mechanical action. Winner of the 2025 Parents Choice Award. Designed for kids ages 6 to 12.
- REAL ROCKET SCIENCE — SERIOUSLY: Every launch teaches Newton's Third Law of Motion — action and reaction — in the most tangible way possible. Kids also discover how rocket propulsion works, what forces keep a rocket on course, and why aerodynamic design matters. These are the same principles behind actual space missions, learned through building and launching.
- SAFE FOR INDOOR LAUNCHING: The rocket's soft foam tip makes it safe to launch indoors — no need for a backyard or outdoor space. Kids can blast off in the living room, bedroom, or classroom without any risk to people or furniture. The launcher is stable, the rocket is lightweight, and the thrill is completely real.
- STEM SKILLS BUILT INTO EVERY STEP: Assembling the rocket and launcher teaches structural engineering, spatial reasoning, and mechanical thinking before a single launch takes place. Kids follow illustrated step-by-step instructions to complete the build independently — developing patience, precision, and confidence in their own ability to make things work.
- RELAUNCHABLE, REPLAYABLE, ENDLESSLY FUN: This isn't a one-shot toy. Kids reload, relaunch, and experiment — adjusting angle, force, and technique to see how high and how far the rocket goes each time. Every launch is a new experiment. Every tweak teaches something new about physics, force, and flight.
Markings can change from one mission to another
Even the same rocket program may adjust its optical targets to suit a mission. NASA’s 2026 Artemis II reference-guide search result reports 176 markings for Artemis II, compared with 178 for Artemis I, and two additional optical target assemblies for rendezvous and proximity operations. Those figures are specific to the missions and the guide; they do not establish a general trend for all rockets.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe overall shift is therefore not that modern launch vehicles have universally discarded checkerboards. Rather, a familiar roll pattern is only one possible visual reference. When engineers need camera-based measurements, the useful targets depend on what must be tracked, where cameras can see it, and what conditions the marks must withstand. NASA’s published examples support that SLS-centered explanation, not a single universal reason that every other current rocket omits the pattern.
