Mod creators who object to AI-generated reuploads often object to reuse without permission, missing credit, loss of control over how their work is distributed, or unclear authorship—not necessarily to every use of AI. To check whether a mod upload is authorized, find the original file’s permission terms and verify that they cover the specific action and destination. An AI disclosure tag does not grant permission to reuse someone else’s work.
Why creators object to AI-generated reuploads
A reupload can separate a mod from the page where its author stated permission terms, credited contributors, described dependencies, posted updates, and offered support. A copied credit line does not tell readers whether the creator approved the new upload or the way it was changed.

AI can add a further provenance concern when a system recreates or transforms another creator’s assets or voice. Rights holders may object to that use, but platform rules and individual disputes do not establish that all mod creators oppose AI, or that every AI-assisted mod is unauthorized.

Nexus Mods’ May 2, 2023 statement said AI-generated mod content was not automatically against its rules under the approach then in effect, while allowing removal after a credible complaint. It encouraged creators to use AI tools only with explicit permission for all assets. That statement is historical context; the current Nexus Mods File Submission Guidelines set out the present requirements.

AI disclosure and reuse permission are separate checks
Nexus Mods’ current guidelines distinguish among AI-generated in-game content, AI promotional media, and limited AI assistance. They require distinct tags for “AI-Generated Content” (such as generated code, voices, dialogue, translations, music, or in-game assets), “AI Media” (promotional material such as thumbnails or descriptions), and “AI Assisted” (limited involvement such as texture or audio upscaling). Undisclosed generative AI use may be subject to moderation, and the AI Assisted tag requires evidence. The guidelines page says it was last updated September 29, 2026.
Those categories tell users how AI was used; they do not establish that an uploader has permission to reuse another person’s mod or assets. Check the relevant file’s reuse terms separately, even when the upload is properly tagged.

How to verify permission for a mod
- Find the original file page. Identify the original author and file rather than relying on copied credits, a familiar host, or a polished description.
- Read that file’s permission terms. Nexus Mods says its permission settings are file specific. Confirm that the terms cover the action you intend—such as reuploading, porting, translating, modifying, combining, or reusing assets—and the destination where you plan to publish it.
- Check the scope and conditions. A permission may allow broad redistribution, or it may apply only to a named account or platform. It may also prohibit alterations or combinations, or require additional approval.
- Ask if the terms are silent or unclear. Nexus Mods says to assume permission must be requested when an author has not provided permission information. Contact the author through the platform and wait for explicit permission before reuploading or adapting the work.
- Keep the source and permission record available. When sharing a permitted port, preserve a link to the original page and the relevant public permission statement.
Nexus Mods’ guidelines state: “Please, be aware that the mere accreditation of an author is no substitute for receiving explicit permission to upload or modify someone else’s content.” The rule is straightforward: credit is required unless waived, but credit alone is not authorization.
Extra checks for ports to Bethesda.net
Bethesda’s Community Standards say: “Only upload your creations. – Do not upload content from third party websites unless you have permission from the original creator.” Its support guidance also says not to upload mods—or mods that take content from other mods—without creator permission.

If the porter is not an author or co-author, Bethesda requires the port description to name the original authors and link to the source mod. If permission is posted elsewhere, the description must link to it too. Permission must be publicly available on the site hosting the mod; for newer ports, screenshots of private messages or permissions from social media and chat services are generally not accepted as evidence under Bethesda’s current porting rules.
Check the exact terms: a permission may cover any site, Bethesda.net, or consoles specifically; another may require individual approval and identification of the approved account. Some permissions restrict alterations or combinations. A general approval to use a mod does not necessarily cover every port or derivative.

Use this checklist before trusting or sharing a reupload
- Can you locate the original author and the original file page?
- Do the file’s terms explicitly cover this use and destination?
- Is permission blanket, or limited to a named account, platform, or condition?
- For a Bethesda.net port, is permission publicly available, and does the description link to the source and identify the authors?
- Are AI tags handled separately from the permission question?
- If the terms are absent, unclear, or too narrow, has the author explicitly approved the specific use?
Rules vary by platform and can change. For sites beyond Nexus Mods and Bethesda.net, check the destination host’s current rules and the original file’s live permission terms; do not assume a permission on one platform authorizes distribution elsewhere.
