The failure itself is reported by WSMV. The reason remains disputed: an MNPS spokesperson said the shooter was too far from cameras for an accurate reading, while Omnilert’s CEO said the weapon was not visible to the cameras.
The more-than-$1-million figure refers to a districtwide contract and related security infrastructure, not a confirmed Antioch High-only purchase. A 2026 survivor lawsuit alleges additional design and operating limitations, but those claims have not been established by a court.

What happened at Antioch High School?
On January 22, 2025, 17-year-old Solomon Henderson drew a firearm in the cafeteria at Antioch High School in Nashville. Sixteen-year-old Josselin Corea Escalante was killed, another student was injured, and Henderson died by suicide.
WSMV reported that MNPS’s Omnilert system had been installed and was operating, but it did not identify the weapon and did not send an alert to police. That is the confirmed outcome: the camera system missed the event when the gun was drawn.

How Omnilert’s camera detection is supposed to work
Omnilert analyzes live footage from school security cameras for a visible firearm. According to CEO Dave Fraser’s description to CNN, a suspected-gun event sends an image, a short video and the camera or building location to a human verifier. Fraser said emergency response begins in under 20 seconds in most cases after detection. That timing is a vendor description, not an independently audited performance guarantee.
The design therefore depends on several conditions: a camera must cover the relevant area, the weapon must appear clearly enough in the frame, the software must classify it, and a person must verify the alert before the response process starts. A camera system cannot analyze what its cameras do not capture or what is obscured, distant or outside the viewing angle.

Why did the system miss the gun?
The reporting establishes that no detection occurred, but it does not establish one definitive technical cause. MNPS and Omnilert gave different explanations.

Distance, angle and visibility can overlap: a firearm that is technically in a frame may still be too small, obscured or poorly lit for reliable classification. The available reporting does not resolve whether distance, visibility, or both caused the missed alert.

What did MNPS’s “$1 million” system actually cost?
Ars Technica reported that MNPS approved a contract worth more than $1 million in 2023 for a districtwide AI-detection layer on existing cameras and associated security infrastructure. CNN reported the districtwide Omnilert deployment in February 2024.

What does the 2026 survivor lawsuit allege?
Ars Technica reported that an injured teenage survivor filed a lawsuit in Davidson County against Omnilert and reseller System Integrations. The complaint alleges that the companies knew or should have known about important operating limitations, including camera placement, proximity to subjects, viewing angle, lighting and whether a weapon is visible.

Those are allegations, not findings of fact or a judgment. The lawsuit does not by itself establish negligence, product liability or a technical cause for the Antioch miss. Ars reported that an Omnilert cofounder declined to answer its questions about the case and that the reseller did not respond to a request for comment.
Do AI gun-detection systems prevent school shootings?
CNN’s February 2025 report quoted school-safety and privacy experts who said there was no data proving that AI gun-detection software prevents school shootings at that time. They described the technology as too new for a settled evidence base. That statement is limited to the evidence available when CNN reported it; it is not proof that every later study will reach the same conclusion.

Omnilert has described its product as one layer of a broader security plan rather than a standalone answer to gun violence. After the Antioch shooting, MNPS began installing entrance-screening scanners at the school, according to CNN. The reports do not establish that either camera AI or entrance scanners are superior overall.
Camera AI versus entrance screening
These approaches address different points in the attack chain. Camera AI monitors activity after people are inside; entrance screening attempts to intercept prohibited items before entry. A meaningful comparison requires more than the purchase price.

Questions a district should answer before buying
- Coverage: Which rooms, corridors and outdoor areas are actually visible, and where are the blind spots?
- Image quality: What minimum distance, lighting, angle and resolution are required for a reliable alert?
- Occlusion: How does the system perform when a firearm is partly hidden by clothing, a person, furniture or a crowd?
- Testing: Has the district conducted documented tests in its own buildings rather than relying only on vendor demonstrations?
- Alert workflow: Who verifies an alert, what evidence do they receive, and how are police and school leaders notified?
- Failure handling: What happens when cameras, networks, power or the verification service are unavailable?
- Performance reporting: Are missed detections, false alerts and response times measured independently and published with the test conditions?
- Total cost: What are the recurring licensing, integration, camera-upgrade, staffing, training and maintenance costs?
- Privacy: How long are video clips and alert records retained, who can access them, and how are they audited?
