If Microsoft Teams won’t open, first check your internet connection, then fully quit and reopen Teams and complete any sign-in or verification prompts. Try Teams on the web to see whether you can get in while troubleshooting the desktop app. For work or school accounts, your organization’s required network, VPN or account settings may also matter.
Start with the quickest checks
- Check your connection. Open an unrelated website. If it does not load, fix the network connection before changing Teams.
- Quit Teams completely and reopen it. If a sign-in window appears, finish the sign-in flow and any required verification, such as multifactor authentication (MFA). If no sign-in window appears, Microsoft recommends quitting and reopening the app. See Microsoft’s reconnect guidance.
- Try Teams on the web. Go to teams.microsoft.com. Microsoft also identifies this as a way to start Teams. If the web version opens while the desktop app does not, you have a useful comparison point; that alone does not identify the cause.
- Check for a service incident. Microsoft’s reconnect guide recommends checking its official status account for service issues. A reported incident may explain why the app cannot connect even when your device and network seem to be working.
Check sign-in and organization access
A sign-in challenge can make it seem as if Teams itself has failed to launch. Complete the sign-in flow and any verification your account requires. If you use Teams for work or school, your organization may require a particular network location or VPN. Microsoft advises users to confirm those requirements, avoid switching networks while using Teams and keep the app updated; see Microsoft’s sign-in help.

If the problem appears related to your work or school account, access policy or required network, contact your organization’s IT administrator. Microsoft identifies that administrator as the first technical support resource because they manage the organization’s Teams settings. The Teams support hub links to guidance for connectivity, web access, reconnecting and uninstalling.

When to clear the cache or reinstall Teams
Consider cache clearing or reinstalling only after checking connectivity, restarting Teams, trying the web version and confirming any sign-in or organization requirements. These steps affect the local installation, and the instructions depend on your platform and client. Microsoft’s reconnect guide describes cache clearing for Windows and Mac and notes that clearing the cache removes local cached material, including message history and display images. Check its current directions for your installed client before proceeding.

If you decide to uninstall on Windows, Microsoft says a full removal requires uninstalling both Microsoft Teams and Teams Machine-Wide Installer. The Mac procedure differs. Use the current instructions for your platform in Microsoft’s uninstall guide rather than applying Windows steps to a Mac or assuming every Teams client has the same layout.

What the symptoms can—and can’t—tell you
- An unrelated website also fails: investigate your internet connection first; Teams is not the only affected service.
- Teams opens after a restart or verification: the immediate obstacle was consistent with a stalled app session or an unfinished sign-in flow, but it does not establish a broader root cause.
- Teams on the web works but the desktop app does not: use the web version as a fallback and comparison while focusing on the desktop app. This difference does not, by itself, prove why the app failed.
- You use a managed work or school account: required VPN, network access or organization settings may be involved; your IT administrator can check account and policy issues.
- Multiple checks fail or a service incident is reported: avoid repeatedly changing the installation until connectivity or the reported service issue is addressed.
