For a personal account, you can usually provide any reachable contact method that can receive a verification code; it does not have to be your primary email address. The right explanation depends on whether this is a personal account, a work or school sign-in, or a Microsoft 365 business signup.
Why Microsoft is asking now
A security prompt is not necessarily a sign that your account has been hacked. Microsoft says it may ask people to confirm security information occasionally, including after a long time without signing in. It may also require an identity check as part of a sign-in or recovery flow. The prompt alone does not reveal which specific signal caused it in your case.

First identify which prompt and account you have
Personal account: “Help us secure your account”
This prompt asks for a contact method so Microsoft can send a code and check that the person signing in is the account owner. Microsoft says the email address does not have to be yours; you only need to be able to access it and receive the code. A reachable phone number may also be offered. See Microsoft’s instructions for “Help us secure your account”.

This is a separate notice asking you to verify or add security information. Microsoft says it can be skipped for 24 hours at a time, but once seven days have passed from the first notice, you must verify or add security information before signing in again. Microsoft also says it does not ask users to verify security information every time they sign in. Details are in Microsoft’s verification-code troubleshooting guidance.

Work or school account
A work or school sign-in may require an additional verification method under your organization’s policy. If the prompt says “Let’s keep your account secure,” follow your organization’s sign-in process or ask its IT administrator if you are unsure. Microsoft’s work or school account sign-in guidance distinguishes these accounts from personal Microsoft accounts.
Microsoft 365 for business signup
During business signup, an alternate email is a separate administrative contact requirement, not necessarily the same security prompt used for a personal account. Microsoft says this address should not be connected to the business service and may be used for important messages, such as administrator password-reset information. See Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 business signup guidance.

What to do safely
- Confirm the account and wording. Work out whether you are signing in to a personal account, a work or school account, or signing up for Microsoft 365 for business. The purpose and next steps differ.
- Start from Microsoft directly. If you received an unexpected email about the prompt, do not use its link to sign in. Go directly to Microsoft’s account sign-in or security pages and check recent activity if you are concerned. Microsoft says it will never ask for your password by email; see Microsoft’s guidance on protecting an Outlook.com account.
- Choose a method you can access. For the personal “Help us secure your account” prompt, enter an email address or phone number that can receive the code. It need not be your main address.
- Check an unfamiliar masked address carefully. Confirm that you are using the intended account, and check the spelling and email domain shown. If you still cannot identify or access the method, use Microsoft’s recovery process rather than guessing.
- Keep one working recovery method while adding another. If you can still use one method, add and verify a replacement before removing the old one. Microsoft warns that replacing all security information at once may restrict the account for 30 days. If you have lost access to every method, the “I don’t have any of these” replacement process can also involve a 30-day wait. Follow Microsoft’s security-information replacement steps.
- Stop resending codes if requests are blocked. Microsoft lists unusual activity and excessive or repeated code requests among possible reasons for a block. Try another verification method already linked to the account, or wait before trying again. See Microsoft’s verification-code troubleshooting page.
Do you need to create another email account?
Not necessarily. For the personal account security prompt, Microsoft says the alternate address can be any email you can access to receive the code; a usable phone number may also work. Do not add an address you cannot reach, since it will not help you complete verification or recover the account. Business signup is different: Microsoft specifies a non-work alternate address for important administrative messages.
