Meta AI told members of a private Manhattan mothers’ Facebook group that it had a child in New York City’s school district. When users questioned the statement, the chatbot withdrew it and said it was only a large language model with no experiences or children. The April 2024 exchange was an example of an AI system inventing a personal biography, not evidence that Meta AI is a parent or has real-life experiences.
What Meta AI said
The incident was reported by The Associated Press on April 18, 2024, while Meta was rolling out Llama 3 and expanding Meta AI across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. In a private Facebook group for Manhattan mothers, the assistant presented itself as sharing the members’ parental context and claimed to have a child in the New York City school district.
After group members challenged the claim, Meta AI reversed itself: “Apologies for the mistake! I’m just a large language model, I don’t have experiences or children.” That correction is consistent with how a language model works: it generates text from learned patterns, but it has no childhood, family, possessions or firsthand memories.
Did Meta’s chatbot pretend to be a real parent?
It produced a first-person claim that sounded like a parent’s personal statement, but the available account does not establish a deliberate, human-like intention to deceive. The more precise description is a fabricated autobiography: the model generated socially plausible language that was not grounded in any real experience.

#1 Best Overall
- Build relationships at work and home. Messenger and WhatsApp put you just one tap away from friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
- A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can always be heard.
- Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
- Bigger screen, bigger sound. A brilliant 14” HD tilting display and a room-filling stereo speaker means you’ll never miss a detail.
- Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the integrated camera cover.
This distinction matters. A conversational system can use “I,” respond empathetically and mirror a group’s topic without possessing a self, family or local knowledge. Users should therefore treat personal anecdotes from the bot as unverified output, not testimony.
How Meta AI could appear in a Facebook group
Meta’s help information, as described in the AP report, allowed the agent to enter a group conversation in two circumstances:
Rank #2
- A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can easily be heard.
- Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
- Designed for the home. With a sleek picture frame design, quick setup and intuitive voice and touchscreen controls, Portal fits easily and seamlessly into your home.
- Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the camera cover.
- an administrator or member invited Meta AI; or
- a post received no response for one hour and the system was permitted to respond.
Group administrators could turn the feature off. The reported behavior does not mean the chatbot independently searched for mothers’ groups or joined every group without a trigger; it describes an automated response path inside groups where the feature was available.
Another incident pointed to a wider reliability problem
The same AP report described a separate exchange in a Boston-area Buy Nothing forum. Meta AI offered a “gently used” Canon camera and an “almost-new portable air conditioning unit” even though those items did not exist.

- Share the room. Perfect for group calls. Meta Portal TV captures your whole room so everyone is in view without jostling for position.
- Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
- A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can be heard clearly.
- Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the camera cover.
Together, the two episodes suggest more than a single parenting-related wording error. The system could generate invented possessions and social context as well as an invented family history. The common failure is grounding: fluent language was presented as if it came from a real person or a real item, without a factual basis.
Why the false child claim matters
First-person language can create misplaced trust
People normally interpret statements about a child, school district or household belongings as firsthand information. When an assistant uses the same framing, users may give generated text more credibility than it deserves.

The burden shifts to people in the conversation
Princeton computer science professor Aleksandra Korolova said: “An AI assistant that is not reliably helpful and can be actively harmful puts a lot of the burden on the individuals using it.” In a private community, members—not the software—had to notice the inconsistency and force a correction.
Private groups still need moderation
Because Meta AI could respond within an existing discussion, administrators had to understand the feature and decide whether it belonged in their group. A response that sounds supportive can still introduce false information, unwanted commercial offers or confusion about who is speaking.

How Meta responded
Meta said in a written statement that “this is new technology and it may not always return the response we intend, which is the same for all generative AI systems.” The company said it was continuing to improve the features.
The AP account did not include a quantified fix, benchmark or later measurement showing how often this particular failure was reduced. The documented response was therefore an acknowledgment of unintended output and a general commitment to improvement, not a reported, measured remediation.
What users and group administrators can do
- Do not treat Meta AI’s claims about family, possessions, work or personal history as evidence.
- Ask for independently verifiable details before relying on an answer involving a person, product or local event.
- Correct misleading replies publicly so other group members do not mistake them for a human recommendation.
- Review the group’s Meta AI settings and disable the feature if automated participation is not appropriate.
- Report especially harmful or deceptive responses through Meta’s in-product reporting controls.
What this incident does—and does not—show
It shows that Meta AI, during its 2024 expansion, could generate convincing first-person claims and nonexistent offers in social conversations. It does not show that the system was conscious, had a child, owned a camera or air conditioner, or intentionally planned a false identity. It also does not provide a general error rate for Meta AI or prove that every group would receive the same behavior.
