AI server buildouts can push memory prices up because suppliers are directing limited advanced production capacity toward server products, while demand for those products grows. That pressure does not affect every kind of RAM or storage equally: the latest market forecasts point to different conditions for PC DRAM, server DRAM, client SSDs, and enterprise SSDs.
Why AI server buildouts can tighten memory supply
AI systems need large amounts of high-performance memory, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and server DRAM. As cloud providers and server makers expand infrastructure, they compete for production resources and related components. TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 outlook says suppliers are prioritizing advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products, while constraints in packaging, testing, components, and front-end production flexibility limit how quickly supply can respond.

Those choices can affect other buyers even when a PC memory kit is not itself an AI product. Manufacturers cannot instantly redirect production among every memory type, and capacity committed to server applications is not necessarily available to meet PC demand. This is a supply-allocation effect, not evidence that every memory product is made on the same line or will rise by the same amount.

TrendForce’s headline figures are forecasts for negotiated contract prices between industry buyers and suppliers. They are not measurements of retail prices for a particular desktop DDR5 RAM kit or consumer SSD; retail offers also depend on the product, local availability, inventory, and seller.

What the latest forecasts say—and what they do not
TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 outlook forecasts increases in both conventional DRAM and NAND Flash contract prices for 4Q26. Its 3 July 2026 outlook provides a prior-quarter comparison. The percentages below are quarter-over-quarter contract-price forecasts, not confirmed price changes in shops.
| Market measure | 3Q26 forecast | 4Q26 forecast |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional DRAM contract prices | Up 13–18% QoQ, TrendForce forecast published 3 July 2026 [c002] | Up 10–15% QoQ, TrendForce forecast published 30 September 2026 [c001] |
| NAND Flash contract prices | Up 10–15% QoQ, TrendForce forecast published 3 July 2026 [c002] | Up 15–20% QoQ, TrendForce forecast published 30 September 2026 [c001] |
The comparison shows why “memory prices” is too broad a label: TrendForce forecast a slower quarterly increase for conventional DRAM in 4Q26 than in 3Q26, but a higher one for NAND Flash. A forecast increase that moderates is still an increase; it does not imply that retail prices will fall.

Why RAM and SSDs can follow different paths
| Segment | What is shaping supply and demand | What that means for buyers |
|---|---|---|
| PC DRAM | TrendForce reported that PC makers continued procuring agreed volumes during 2026, while suppliers shifted more capacity toward server applications. It warned that PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027. | PC memory may face tighter supply, but this does not establish a specific retail price or a guaranteed increase for every kit. |
| Server DRAM | Improving CPU availability supported greater procurement of RDIMMs for general servers, including systems supporting agentic AI. TrendForce expected the segment to remain undersupplied in 4Q26; long-term agreements moderated some suppliers’ increases. | Server-market tightness is direct evidence of strong demand, but contract terms mean its pricing does not translate mechanically into a consumer RAM price. |
| Client SSDs and NAND | TrendForce described AI-related demand alongside weaker consumer demand. PC makers could draw on inventory and reduce SSD capacity in mainstream systems to manage costs, limiting client SSD purchasing needs. | NAND contract forecasts do not tell you what a particular consumer SSD will cost; client demand and inventory can restrain price moves. |
| Enterprise SSDs | TrendForce forecast enterprise SSD bit demand to grow by more than 80% year over year in 2026 as cloud providers expanded AI inference infrastructure. It said most incremental supply was already committed and projected faster 4Q26 price growth than in the prior quarter. | This is a notably pressured enterprise market, not a forecast for consumer SSD retail prices. |
Should you buy RAM or storage now, or wait?
There is no universal best month to buy in the cited market outlooks. Make the decision around the upgrade you actually need, rather than assuming that all memory products will rise together.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Identify the component. Decide whether you need RAM (DRAM) or a storage drive (usually NAND-based SSD). Their supply and demand patterns differ.
- Check compatibility before comparing prices. For a desktop RAM upgrade, confirm the motherboard and system’s DDR generation, form factor, supported capacity, and specifications. The market forecasts do not establish whether any particular kit fits your computer.
- Compare equivalent products and current offers. Match capacity and relevant specifications, then check retail price and local availability. A contract-price forecast is not a substitute for comparing the product you can actually buy.
- Let urgency set the timing. If the upgrade is necessary, weigh need, compatibility, availability, and the current price. If it is optional, monitor the exact product category and reassess rather than buying solely because of a broad market headline.
How certain is the longer-term outlook?
Micron has expressed concern about supply extending beyond the current quarter. TechRadar reported on 1 October 2026 that Micron expected memory and storage supply-demand conditions to be much tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than in 2026, and that the company did not have a line of sight to when supply and demand would return to balance. This is Micron’s outlook as reported by a secondary publication, not a guaranteed outcome or an independent consensus forecast.

Nearer-term market estimates also change: TrendForce’s 5 January 2026 forecast for 1Q26 projected conventional DRAM contract prices up 55–60% QoQ and NAND Flash contract prices up 33–38% QoQ. Those were January forecasts for that quarter, not current retail observations; they illustrate why dated, segment-specific estimates should not be treated as a standing price rule.
