validate_vast passing pasted XML means that the supplied document passed the checks applied to it. It does not, on its own, show what a live tag URL returns or establish that the URL’s wrapper chain reaches an Inline ad. Those are separate checks: validate the XML you have, fetch the live URL, then inspect each wrapper hop if needed.
What a passing validate_vast result tells you
VAST is an XML-based format for structuring video ad tags and transferring ad metadata from an ad server to a video player. An XML validator checks the document it receives against its supported rules or schema; it does not automatically establish that a separate URL currently returns that same document. The IAB overview of VAST describes the format, while the IAB Tech Lab VAST Tag Validator describes its tool as a way to test and validate VAST XML.

So if an agent call receives pasted XML, a pass is evidence about that input under the validator’s checks. It is not proof that the live tag is healthy, that its redirects were fetched, or that an ad will play. The exact behavior of a particular MCP deployment depends on its tool schema and implementation; the available documentation does not confirm the runtime behavior or version of the specific MCP server implied here.

Why a live VAST URL can still return wrappers
A VAST Wrapper points to another VAST response through its VASTAdTagURI. That next response can be another Wrapper or an Inline response containing the ad. The IAB VAST 4 schema defines this relationship. Consequently, validating one XML document—even a valid Wrapper—does not show what the next URL returns.

Each additional redirect can also add latency before the player reaches the creative. Microsoft’s VAST Check documentation notes that every redirect to another VAST document increases the time to reach the actual creative. A wrapper chain is therefore both a debugging question and a potential delivery delay.
Use the check that matches the question
| Question | Check | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Is this XML document acceptable to the validator? | Submit the XML itself to an XML validation workflow. | Whether that supplied document passes the checks the tool performs. |
| What does this tag URL return now? | Use a workflow that fetches the live URL. | The response fetched at that time, rather than a separate pasted document. |
| Where does the wrapper chain lead? | Inspect each returned Wrapper and follow its VASTAdTagURI to the next response. |
The sequence of responses observed, including whether an Inline response appears. |
| Will the ad play successfully? | Test the live response in an appropriate player or preview workflow. | Playback behavior in that test context; XML validity alone cannot establish it. |
The VASTlint validation guide documents these as distinct workflows: its validator is for XML in hand, its tester for a live URL or creative preview, and its inspector for wrapper debugging. Tool capabilities vary, so check the documentation for the specific validator or inspector rather than assuming all tools fetch URLs or expose wrapper hops.
How to trace the live chain
- Keep the two inputs distinct. Record the exact XML that passed and the live tag URL you want to diagnose. Do not treat them as interchangeable unless you have confirmed the URL returns that exact document.
- Fetch the live URL. Use a URL-based tester or other workflow that actually requests the tag. A raw XML validation result cannot substitute for this request.
- Read the response type. If the response contains a Wrapper, locate its
VASTAdTagURI. That URI is the next VAST response to check. - Continue hop by hop. Fetch each referenced URI and inspect its response. Stop when you reach an Inline response, or document the last response and error if the chain does not resolve as expected.
- Report the scope of the result. Say whether you validated pasted XML, fetched a URL, inspected wrapper hops, or tested playback. Avoid saying simply “the VAST tag is valid” when only one document was checked.
What to verify in an MCP integration
The function name validate_vast does not by itself reveal whether a deployment accepts only XML, fetches URLs, follows redirects, or reports the chain. Check the deployed tool’s schema and, when investigating a discrepancy, its input and runtime trace. If it was given only XML, the defensible conclusion is that the supplied XML passed its checks—not that the live URL was fetched or fully resolved.
