Why Low-Code Platforms Keep Expanding Into Integration

Low-code platforms face pressure to connect apps, data and services as usage grows. Learn when built-in connectors suffice and when broader integration capabilities matter.

Low-code platforms face growing pressure to handle integration as the applications built on them multiply. They need to connect to data, APIs, services and existing systems; some also need to coordinate processes across those systems. That does not mean every low-code vendor becomes an iPaaS provider—or that an organization should put every integration in its low-code platform. The practical question is when the platform’s built-in connectors are enough and when integration needs a broader home.

Why integration becomes part of low-code’s job

Low-code platforms help teams build applications quickly, but an application is useful only if it can reach the information and services it depends on. Gartner’s 2025 description of enterprise low-code platforms identifies integration demands alongside delivery speed and legacy-system complexity as challenges teams face. That makes integration a predictable pressure on the category, not proof that every platform will become a dedicated integration platform.

The pressure grows when a business moves from a single app calling a single service to a portfolio of applications and processes that need shared data, consistent access controls, monitoring and change management. Gartner describes iPaaS as covering application and data integration, process automation and service composition, with capabilities such as connectors, transformation, orchestration, API access policies, security and runtime options. Its 2026 summary also includes support for AI adoption; that is a description of category scope, not evidence that every vendor offers equivalent AI capabilities.

Low-code and iPaaS are not mutually exclusive labels: Gartner’s iPaaS definition includes low- or no-code development environments. The useful distinction is the work being done. A low-code app may use a connector to reach an external system; an integration platform is more likely to be assessed for a portfolio of reusable, governed, monitored flows across systems. Product capabilities can overlap, so buyers should compare requirements rather than rely on category names.

Three kinds of integration, with different responsibilities

Microsoft’s modernization guidance distinguishes data, application and process integration. Choosing among them depends on whether the goal is a unified view of information, a connection between applications or coordination of a business process.

Data integration

Data integration combines information from different sources to provide a unified view. Microsoft notes that working with local data can improve performance, but this pattern does not itself construct real-time logic or processes. It can suit an app that needs a consolidated view without making every user action depend on a live chain of systems.

Application integration

Application integration connects systems at the application layer, commonly through APIs or low-code connectors. For example, a form might retrieve a customer record from a CRM when a user opens it. The connection creates a defined interface, but it can also create real-time dependencies and a security boundary that needs to be managed.

Microsoft’s guidance describes OpenAPI documents as a way to define how a low-code component interacts with a REST API. API management can govern that boundary, while custom connectors let low-code components use the API through a controlled interface. This supports independent evolution of client applications and APIs, provided the interface and its access are managed deliberately.

Process integration

Process integration links different systems that participate in a business process. Microsoft describes it as a more decoupled pattern, useful when a process is modernized in stages while legacy systems continue handling other parts. An illustrative example is a workflow spanning CRM, ERP and identity services, with retries, monitoring and change management. That is materially different in responsibility from a connector that reads one CRM record.

When built-in connectors are enough—and when they are not

A platform’s built-in connectors may be a good fit when an app needs a direct, well-understood interaction and the platform provides the required access controls and operational visibility. Consider a broader integration approach when connections become a portfolio that must be reused, transformed, orchestrated or operated across teams and systems.

  • Stay close to the app when the integration serves a limited application need and has straightforward data exchange.
  • Evaluate an integration platform when multiple systems participate in shared processes, flows need reuse, or transformation and orchestration are central.
  • Define ownership explicitly when app teams and integration teams share responsibility for APIs, credentials, failures, changes and production support.

These are decision cues, not product guarantees. Connector availability alone does not establish that a platform meets an organization’s requirements for reliability, security or lifecycle management.

How to choose an integration approach

Gartner’s comparison of integration platform software, iPaaS, SaaS-native tools, custom code and function platforms emphasizes that the right choice depends on portfolio scale, control needs, operating model and skills—not simply on which option has the most connectors.

Decision axis What to assess
Portfolio size and complexity Gartner says integration platform software is best suited when a large portfolio must be managed and data transformed. A small number of direct app connections may not justify the same operational footprint.
Transformation and orchestration Determine whether data merely passes between systems or must be transformed and coordinated through multi-system processes. Gartner lists transformation and orchestration among iPaaS capabilities.
Operations and hosting Gartner describes iPaaS as similar in function to integration middleware but hosted, shifting middleware operational responsibilities to the provider. Confirm which runtime, monitoring and control responsibilities remain with your team.
On-premises reach Gartner cautions that hosted iPaaS can have more limited ability to integrate deeply with on-premises applications. Validate the specific product’s current connectivity and deployment options against the systems you must reach.
Flexibility and control Gartner says SaaS-vendor tooling can be convenient for nontechnical users but offers less flexibility and control than broader approaches. Weigh convenience against the need to manage integrations across products or vendors.
Governance and security Decide how APIs, credentials, access policies and client applications will be governed. Microsoft’s API-management and custom-connector guidance treats the API boundary as a way to secure access and allow independent evolution.
Skills and delivery Gartner notes that custom code can be tailored, but the necessary skills may not be available internally; function-platform approaches require substantial development and cloud-native architecture skills. Include staffing and support in the choice.
Lifecycle and production operations Gartner’s April 2026 iPaaS market definition lists role-based access, SDLC functions such as versioning, testing and deployment, runtime, and monitoring, alerting, reporting and auditing as mandatory features. Check how a candidate product implements the capabilities your operation needs.

Keep the architecture boundary intentional

Composable architecture offers a useful way to frame the choice: applications, APIs and services can remain modular parts of a broader system. The goal is flexibility and manageable boundaries, not putting every connection into a single application platform.

Gartner’s 2025 enterprise low-code research names a range of vendors, while its iPaaS research covers a different vendor set and frames that category around connecting applications, services and data. Those are the scopes of particular analyst reports, not rankings or recommendations. Vendor features and analyst category definitions change, so validate product-specific capabilities against current documentation before making a purchase or consolidation decision.

As Gartner Senior Director Analyst Kevin Matheny put it, “The decentralized nature of the cloud becomes a challenge when you need to integrate applications, for example, to optimize business processes or gain real-time access to data across various systems and providers.” This describes a general cloud-integration challenge; it is not a measurement of low-code adoption or evidence that every platform changes category.
