Why Live Activities aren’t showing on your iPhone and how to fix them

Find out why Live Activities are not showing on your iPhone. This guide covers app support, the per-app setting, Lock Screen and Dynamic Island checks, expiration limits and app-specific failures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a delivery, sports score, trip or other update does not appear as a Live Activity, start with three checks: the app must actually support Live Activities, its own Live Activities control must be enabled, and you must look in the correct place. Check the Lock Screen on every supported iPhone; check the Dynamic Island only on models that have one. If those checks pass and nothing starts or refreshes, the problem is probably in that app’s implementation or service rather than a hidden iPhone-wide switch.

What Live Activities are—and what they are not

Live Activities are app-provided, glanceable updates for an event that is currently in progress. Examples include turn-by-turn directions, a live sports score and a food-delivery order. The activity is created and updated by the app, then presented by iOS on the Lock Screen and, on compatible iPhone models, in the Dynamic Island.

They are not a universal replacement for notifications, and iOS cannot display an activity that an app has not implemented. Apple’s developer documentation identifies ActivityKit as the framework apps use to start, update and end Live Activities. That means an app can support ordinary notifications while offering no Live Activity at all, or it can support the feature only for particular events, accounts, regions or app versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide puts the key limitation plainly: “Note: Not all apps have a Live Activities setting.” If the setting is missing for an app, do not keep searching for a global iPhone toggle; first establish whether that app supports the feature for the event you are trying to follow.

The feature also has a narrower purpose than a permanent dashboard. It follows a current activity, such as an order that is being prepared or a match that is being played. A normal app notification can remain in Notification Center as a message, but a Live Activity is a changing status supplied by the app while the event is active. If there is no qualifying event, there may be nothing for iOS to display even when the app supports ActivityKit.

Fix Live Activities in the right order

Work through these checks from simplest to most specific. Each step separates an unsupported app or expired activity from a presentation or setting problem. Use a new, clearly qualifying event when possible; testing an old or completed event can make a working setup look broken.

1. Confirm that the app supports Live Activities

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select the app that should be showing the update.
  4. Look for a Live Activities option.

If the option is present, continue to the next step. If it is absent, Apple says not all apps have this setting. The likely explanations are that the installed app does not expose Live Activities, the feature is unavailable for that particular activity, or support differs for your account, region or app version. Check the app’s current help pages or ask its developer whether the event you want to track is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer support from another app in the same category. One delivery service may offer an order activity while another provides only push notifications. Likewise, an app may expose the setting but start an activity only after a qualifying order, match, ride or route has begun.

A menu by itself is not proof that every screen in the app can create an activity. The developer chooses which event types use ActivityKit. For example, an app could support a delivery in one region while leaving reservations or older orders as ordinary notifications. Ask support about the exact event rather than only asking whether the brand “supports” Live Activities.

2. Turn on the app-level control

When the menu exists, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities and make sure the control is enabled. Apple allows people to deactivate Live Activities for an individual app, so an otherwise supported app can appear broken when this switch is off.

This is an app-specific permission, not a single master switch that enables every app. Repeat the check for each app whose updates are missing. If you enabled the setting while an event was already in progress, give the app an opportunity to start or refresh its activity; the setting does not create a past event retroactively.

Record the state before changing it. If the control was already on, switching it off and on is not a guaranteed repair and may make it harder to tell whether a later event was genuinely new. The useful test is a fresh qualifying event after the control is confirmed on.

3. Check the Lock Screen first

Lock Screen presentation is the broadest check because it does not require a Dynamic Island. Lock the iPhone and look for the app’s current activity among the Lock Screen information. The activity may be present there even when you were expecting a compact indicator at the top of the display.

Make sure you are checking the same iPhone that started the event and that the event is still active. A completed order, finished route or ended game will not continue to update as though it were in progress.

If you see the activity on the Lock Screen, the app has successfully produced something for iOS to present. That narrows the remaining question to where it is displayed, whether the phone supports Dynamic Island, which activity is selected, or whether the event has ended. It is different from a case in which no activity appears in either location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Treat the Dynamic Island as a separate requirement

The Dynamic Island is available only on supported iPhone models. On a compatible model, it appears at the top of the screen when the iPhone is unlocked. An activity can therefore be visible on the Lock Screen but not in a Dynamic Island that your model does not have.

When two activities are displayed, Apple documents gestures for managing them: touch and hold an activity to expand it, swipe to collapse it, and swipe between the displayed activities to switch which one is prominent. These gestures can change what is visible, but they cannot reveal an activity that the app never started.

Check the Lock Screen before treating a missing Island indicator as a failure. The two locations answer different questions: the Lock Screen confirms that iOS is presenting the activity, while the Dynamic Island additionally depends on compatible hardware, an unlocked phone and the activity’s current presentation state.

Symptom Most useful check What the result means
No Live Activities menu for the app Check the app’s help or contact its developer The app may not expose Live Activities for your installed version, account, region or event.
Menu exists, but nothing appears anywhere Enable Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities The app-level control may have been disabled.
Activity appears on the Lock Screen but not at the top of an unlocked phone Verify that the iPhone model supports Dynamic Island Lock Screen support does not imply Dynamic Island support on every model.
Several activities are active, but the expected one is not prominent Use Apple’s expand, collapse and switch gestures The activity may be present but not currently selected in the Dynamic Island.
An activity disappeared after a long event Check how long it has been active It may have reached Apple’s documented lifecycle limit.

Check whether the activity has expired

Live Activities have a finite system-managed lifetime. Apple documents a maximum active period of eight hours. After that period, iOS removes the activity from the Dynamic Island. It can remain on the Lock Screen for up to four additional hours, after which the system removes it there as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are lifecycle limits, not a prediction of when a particular service will finish. An app can end its activity sooner when an order is delivered, a route ends or a game is over. Conversely, an event that lasts many hours can vanish from the Dynamic Island even though the underlying service is still running, simply because the documented active period has elapsed.

If the activity disappeared after this window, starting a new qualifying event is the relevant test. Repeatedly changing the iPhone setting cannot restore an activity that iOS has already removed for reaching its lifetime.

Timing helps distinguish disappearance from failure to start. Note when the activity first appeared, when it last changed and when it vanished. An activity that worked for hours and then disappeared fits the documented lifecycle more closely than one that never appeared for a new event. The app may also end it earlier when its event reaches a completed state, so eight hours is a maximum, not a promise that every activity lasts that long.

Separate an iPhone presentation issue from an app failure

Once support, the app control, the Lock Screen and the model requirement have all been checked, the remaining fault is likely app-specific. ActivityKit is responsible for an app’s start, update and end behavior, so a problem in that implementation or in the service delivering its updates can prevent an activity from appearing or refreshing.

There is no universal Apple consumer reset sequence that guarantees a fix for a misbehaving Live Activity. The cited iPhone guidance does not say that reinstalling an app, resetting network settings or changing unrelated notification options repairs ActivityKit behavior. Those actions can introduce new variables without addressing the app’s activity code or backend.

Instead, record the exact symptom before contacting support:

  • Whether the app has a Live Activities menu.
  • Whether that control is enabled.
  • The iPhone model and whether you were checking the Lock Screen, the Dynamic Island or both.
  • The event type, such as a particular order, match or route.
  • Whether the activity never started, stopped updating, or disappeared after running for a while.
  • The app version and the approximate time the event began.

Give those details to the app’s support team or developer. They can verify whether the feature is enabled for your account and region, whether that event qualifies, and whether their service is currently sending ActivityKit updates.

Describe the comparison that failed: for example, a new order with the control on produced no Lock Screen activity, or the activity appeared on the Lock Screen but never in the Dynamic Island. This is more actionable than saying only that “notifications are broken,” because ordinary notifications and Live Activities are separate app behaviors.

Why common “fixes” do not answer this symptom

Searching for a universal Live Activities switch

Apple’s control is per app and appears only when an app exposes the setting. Looking through unrelated notification pages will not add support to an app that has no Live Activities implementation.

Swiping the Dynamic Island repeatedly

Swiping and touch-and-hold gestures manage activities that are already being displayed. They cannot create one. First prove that the app supports the feature and that an active event exists.

Assuming every iPhone has a Dynamic Island

Apple documents the Dynamic Island as a feature of supported models, not of every iPhone. A missing Dynamic Island is therefore not evidence that Live Activities are failing. Use the Lock Screen as the primary presentation check.

Expecting an old event to reappear

Activities are tied to a current event and have an eight-hour maximum active period, with up to four more hours of Lock Screen retention. A completed or expired activity will not be restored by enabling its setting later.

Using unrelated notification controls as a diagnosis

Live Activities have their own per-app location in Settings. Changing a different notification option does not establish that the app has implemented ActivityKit or that the particular event qualifies. Keep the test focused on the app menu, the active event and the presentation location.

A quick decision path

  1. Is there a Live Activities menu? If no, verify support with the app’s developer; Apple notes that not all apps have the setting.
  2. Is the app control on? If no, enable it at Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities.
  3. Is the activity on the Lock Screen? If yes, the app is producing an activity; the remaining question may be Dynamic Island compatibility or selection.
  4. Does the iPhone support Dynamic Island? If no, use the Lock Screen. If yes, unlock the iPhone and check the top of the screen.
  5. Are multiple activities active? Expand, collapse or switch between them using Apple’s documented gestures.
  6. Has the event exceeded its lifetime? After eight hours, it is removed from Dynamic Island and may remain on the Lock Screen for up to four more hours.
  7. Do all checks pass but the activity never starts or updates? Treat it as app-specific and contact that app’s support with the details above.

For a clean test, perform the path with one new event at a time. Confirm the menu and switch, start or join the event, check the Lock Screen, then check the unlocked Dynamic Island if the model supports it. This sequence tells you exactly where the expected behavior stops instead of mixing an expired activity with a hardware limitation.

When to escalate to the app developer

Escalate after testing a fresh, qualifying event with the app setting enabled. Include screenshots if possible, but describe where you looked and what you saw. A useful report says, for example, that the app has a Live Activities menu, the control is enabled, the Lock Screen is empty, the phone model supports Dynamic Island, and a new order or match never generated an activity.

This distinction matters because Apple supplies the system presentation and ActivityKit framework, while the app decides when to start an activity, what data to send in updates and when to end it. Support can therefore determine whether the behavior is an account or service limitation rather than an iPhone setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the developer specifically whether Live Activities are enabled for your account, location and app version, and whether the event type is supported. Those questions address the availability limits that a phone setting cannot reveal. If the developer confirms the event should qualify, provide the time it started and whether any ordinary notifications arrived; that helps them investigate the activity start and update path separately.

Frequently overlooked details

  • Lock Screen and Dynamic Island are not interchangeable. The former is Apple’s documented location for Live Activities; the latter requires a compatible model and an unlocked phone.
  • Not every app must expose a setting. A missing menu is meaningful evidence, not a menu that is hidden somewhere else in Settings.
  • The activity is temporary. The eight-hour and four-hour figures describe system retention, not a guarantee that a service will update continuously for that long.
  • There is no published failure-rate statistic. Apple’s user and developer documentation does not establish how often Live Activities fail, so a percentage-based diagnosis would be misleading.
  • A visible setting does not guarantee every event is eligible. Confirm the exact order, route, match or other activity with the app.
  • Changing the setting cannot recreate history. Enable it before testing a new event rather than expecting a completed event to appear retroactively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make an app show Live Activities if its setting is missing?

No iPhone-wide switch can add the feature. Apple says not all apps have a Live Activities setting; ask that app’s developer whether support exists for your event, account, region and installed version.

Why do I see a Live Activity on the Lock Screen but not in the Dynamic Island?

The Dynamic Island is limited to supported iPhone models and appears when the phone is unlocked. The activity can still be working normally on the Lock Screen.

How long should a Live Activity remain visible?

Apple documents up to eight hours of active time. After that it is removed from the Dynamic Island and may remain on the Lock Screen for up to four additional hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I send an app’s support team?

Report whether the Live Activities menu exists and is enabled, your iPhone model, where you looked, the event type, when it began, and whether the activity never started, stopped updating or expired.

Does turning on Live Activities bring back an old order or game?

No. The feature follows a current event. Enabling the control does not create a past activity, and iOS removes activities after their documented lifetime.

Why is the setting available but my particular event still does not appear?

The app may limit Live Activities to certain event types, accounts, regions or app versions. Confirm eligibility with the app’s help or developer and test a new qualifying event.

Can Dynamic Island gestures create a missing activity?

No. Touch-and-hold, collapse and switch gestures manage activities that are already displayed. They cannot start one the app has not created.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the activity appeared and then stopped updating?

Note when it last updated and whether the event ended or exceeded the eight-hour active limit. If it is a new, still-active event within that window, contact the app’s support because ActivityKit or the service may not be sending updates.

The Bottom Line

Check support first, then Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities, the Lock Screen, Dynamic Island compatibility and the eight-hour lifecycle. If a new qualifying event still never starts or refreshes, the app’s developer—not a hidden iPhone-wide switch—is the right next stop.
