Why LinkedIn Images Aren’t Showing and How to Fix Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fix depends on which LinkedIn image is missing. A blank image in an existing feed or profile is a LinkedIn display problem; a failed Page cover upload is an upload/specification problem; and a missing picture beside a shared website link is usually a website metadata or image-access problem. Identify that stage first, then follow the matching steps below.

Start by identifying the missing image

What you see Likely owner of the fix Start here
Profile photo, post image, or feed image is blank or will not load Your LinkedIn session, browser, or account Use LinkedIn’s browser troubleshooting sequence
A Page or Showcase Page cover image will not upload Page administrator and browser Check that surface’s image requirements, then retry the upload steps
A shared website URL has no thumbnail, or the wrong thumbnail appears Website owner, or a Page admin preparing a post Check Open Graph/oEmbed data, image access, and cache timing
An application upload through LinkedIn’s API fails Developer Use the API documentation and its format/error guidance

Do not change Open Graph tags to repair a missing profile or feed image. Those tags describe a website URL when LinkedIn builds a link preview.

When LinkedIn itself is not displaying an image

For a missing profile picture, post image, or other image already inside LinkedIn, there is no single documented cause or universal remedy. LinkedIn’s general troubleshooting guidance is the appropriate first diagnostic path.

Run the browser checks in order

  1. Sign out and sign back in. This refreshes the account session without changing your content.
  2. Open LinkedIn in an incognito or private window. If the image appears there, an extension, stored session, or browser data is a stronger suspect.
  3. Clear the current browser’s cache and cookies for LinkedIn, then sign in again.
  4. Try another browser. Use a current release where possible; a comparison between browsers helps isolate a local configuration issue.
  5. Check the pop-up blocker. LinkedIn lists pop-up blocking as a possible interference with features. Temporarily allow LinkedIn, test, and then restore your preferred setting.

Change one thing at a time if you are trying to find the cause. If the image remains missing across sessions and browsers, contact LinkedIn support with a reproduction description, browser name and version, operating system, and a screenshot. LinkedIn’s guidance does not promise that these steps will fix every account-wide or service-side failure. See LinkedIn’s troubleshooting guidance.

When a Page or Showcase Page cover image will not upload

A cover-image upload error is different from an image that disappears after publication. Begin with the specifications for the exact Page surface you are editing. LinkedIn’s troubleshooting page then recommends the following sequence:

Retry with LinkedIn’s supported checks

  1. Verify the image requirements for that Page or Showcase Page. A file can look correct while still failing a surface-specific requirement.
  2. Save or export the image as PNG and try the upload again. This is a troubleshooting suggestion, not proof that PNG is always required.
  3. Clear browser cookies, sign in again, and repeat the upload.
  4. Use an up-to-date browser or a different browser.
  5. Disable the pop-up blocker temporarily, retry, and re-enable it afterward if it was not involved.

These steps come from LinkedIn’s cover-image troubleshooting page; they narrow common browser and file issues but do not establish one cause for every failed upload.

Why is my LinkedIn link preview image not showing?

When you paste a website URL into a LinkedIn share box, LinkedIn has to retrieve information from that website. LinkedIn says the share box relies on the site’s oEmbed and/or Open Graph Protocol (OGP) information for the title, description, and image. The site must also permit LinkedIn to fetch the image.

What the website owner should inspect

  • Preview metadata: confirm that the page supplies Open Graph or oEmbed information intended for sharing.
  • Image accessibility: make sure LinkedIn is not blocked from retrieving the image and that the file is not stored in a protected directory or otherwise restricted location.
  • The exact URL: test the canonical URL you are sharing, including redirects and protocol changes, rather than a different page variant.

LinkedIn’s developer-facing guidance specifically warns: “If the image meets the requirements, but it still does not appear in updates on LinkedIn, your website may be blocking us from pulling the image or the image may be located on a protected directory or website.” Read Make your website shareable on LinkedIn for that qualification. Do not assume that a particular extension, JavaScript framework, or firewall rule is the cause without checking your own server and access controls.

What a Page admin can change while composing

Page super admins and content admins can customize a preview while preparing a Page post. Paste the URL into the Page share box, select Edit below the text box, and choose the image or edit the article title. This control applies to Page posting workflows; it does not mean every member can edit every personal-post preview. The steps are documented in LinkedIn’s Page post preview instructions.

Check the image’s recommended shape and size

LinkedIn’s Page preview guidance specifies a 1.91:1 ratio and 1200 × 627 pixels. An image narrower than 200 pixels is described as appearing as a left-side thumbnail rather than the larger image format. These are LinkedIn product-guidance values, not a guarantee that every URL will render identically.

When the preview is old after you changed the page

LinkedIn may still be showing information fetched before your metadata or image update. LinkedIn asks publishers to allow 48 hours from the last time the URL was shared or from a website-tag update before trying again. That is platform guidance, not a guaranteed maximum refresh time. Avoid repeatedly changing tags while waiting; record the URL, the time of the change, and the old and new image so you can give support a reproducible example if the old preview persists.

API image uploads: a separate developer problem

If your application uploads images through LinkedIn’s Marketing API, use the API-specific documentation rather than consumer upload advice. Microsoft’s Image API documentation lists JPG, GIF, and PNG support and discusses broad processing-failure categories such as oversized files, unsupported formats, internal errors, and network failures. Those details apply to the API endpoint described there; they should not be generalized to profile photos, feed rendering, or Page-cover uploads.

A practical decision path

  1. Is the image already inside LinkedIn? Try sign-out/sign-in, private mode, cache and cookie clearing, another browser, and the pop-up-blocker check. Escalate with reproducible details if it remains broken.
  2. Is a Page cover upload failing? Check that surface’s requirements, retry as PNG, clear cookies and sign in again, update or change browsers, and test with the pop-up blocker disabled.
  3. Is a website link preview missing? Inspect OGP/oEmbed data and whether LinkedIn can retrieve the image. A Page admin may use the Edit control to choose a preview image.
  4. Did you recently change the site? Allow LinkedIn’s stated 48-hour cache-refresh period before judging the update.
  5. Is software using an API? Follow the API documentation’s formats and processing-error guidance.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes

Symptom Most useful next action What not to conclude
Image appears in private mode but not your normal window Clear LinkedIn cookies/cache and inspect extensions or pop-up blocking That LinkedIn has deleted the image
Cover upload fails repeatedly Recheck the Page surface requirements and retry the PNG/browser steps That PNG is universally mandatory
URL preview has title but no image Check OGP/oEmbed output and image access from the website That changing a profile or feed setting will help
Old image remains after a tag update Wait up to the 48-hour period LinkedIn states, then test again That the cache will refresh at an exact guaranteed time
API upload reports a processing error Check format, size, request, and network handling in the API documentation That consumer LinkedIn upload rules explain the API failure

Or skip the browser setup

If your real task is producing a clean screenshot of a website page while you investigate or document a preview issue, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed, while bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the response identifying the result through X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
