Line-ending failures usually come down to an invisible byte difference: LF is one line-feed character, while CRLF is a carriage return followed by a line feed. Tests that compare raw file contents, fixtures, or serialized output can therefore pass on one machine and fail on another. The durable fix is to define line-ending rules in the repository with .gitattributes, then make tests distinguish between text meaning and exact-byte requirements.
Why line endings can make the same test behave differently
Different operating systems and tools have historically handled line endings differently, as GitHub Docs explains. A line break may be represented as LF (n) or as CRLF (rn). They look alike in many editors, but they are not the same bytes.

A test can expose the difference when it compares files byte for byte, checks an exact fixture, or passes input to a parser or script that expects a particular delimiter. The test may be checking the intended data—or accidentally checking the operating system’s newline convention. The distinction matters: normalize input when the test is about text meaning; preserve and assert exact bytes when the format or interface requires them.

Git can handle line endings at two boundaries: when it stores content in the index and when it checks content out into a working tree. With the text attribute, Git normalizes text line endings to LF in the index. The eol attribute can specify the working-tree style for particular paths. The details depend on the attributes and configuration in effect; see the Git attributes manual.

The warning “LF will be replaced by CRLF” is about conversion between the content Git stores and the file written to the working tree. It does not by itself prove that a file is corrupted. It does mean the active settings affect the bytes a tool or test may read, so check the repository’s attributes and your Git configuration rather than dismissing the warning.
Set a shared policy with .gitattributes
A committed .gitattributes file makes line-ending choices part of the project instead of relying only on each contributor’s machine settings. GitHub Docs describes text=auto as a useful default and shows explicit rules for files that need LF, CRLF, or binary treatment. Adapt the patterns to the project’s actual files; this is a starting point, not a universal list:

Explicit text enables normalization for matching paths; binary is shorthand for disabling text treatment and diffing. Review generated, vendored, and other binary file types before applying broad patterns: treating binary data as text can damage it. Git documents core.safecrlf as a way to warn or reject conversions it considers irreversible under the active configuration. See the Git configuration manual and attributes reference.
core.autocrlf or repository attributes?
core.autocrlf is a machine-level preference; .gitattributes describes rules for paths in the repository. GitHub’s examples use input on macOS and Linux and true on Windows. Git’s configuration documentation says true corresponds to text=auto behavior with CRLF checkout. Repository attributes are generally the better place for team policy because they can express shared, file-specific requirements.

| Approach | Scope and consistency | Per-file control | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
core.autocrlf |
Contributor-level Git preference; different contributors can have different settings. | Not by itself; it does not express path-specific rules. | A local platform preference, especially when the repository has no more specific policy. |
.gitattributes |
Committed repository rules that collaborators share. | Yes: set text normalization, working-tree LF or CRLF, and binary exceptions by path. | Project requirements that should be consistent across contributors and machines. |
GitHub Docs notes that repository settings override core.autocrlf for contributors. A global preference can still be useful, but it should not substitute for rules the project depends on. Sources: GitHub’s line-ending guidance and the Git attributes manual.
Renormalize an existing repository carefully
Changing attributes does not automatically rewrite every tracked file in the index. To apply the new rules, preserve local work first, then use Git’s documented renormalization workflow:

- Save or commit local changes. GitHub Docs cautions contributors to preserve outstanding work before refreshing line endings.
- Add or revise the project’s
.gitattributesfile, including any necessary binary or file-specific exceptions. - Run
git add --renormalize .to reapply attributes to tracked files. - Inspect
git statusand the diff. Check binary, generated, vendored, and platform-specific files especially closely. - Commit only when the resulting changes match the intended policy.
The command re-stages tracked files according to current attributes; it is not a substitute for reviewing the resulting change. If files that should not be normalized appear in the diff, correct their attributes before committing. Git’s renormalization example uses the same clean-working-tree, add, renormalize, inspect, and commit sequence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMake tests intentional about newline handling
When the test cares about text, not bytes
Read input through the language’s text APIs and normalize or explicitly accept the newline variants at the input boundary. That makes the test focus on the content rather than a checkout detail. Python’s historical PEP 278 describes universal-newline input: CR, LF, and CRLF are accepted and exposed as n in universal-newline mode. It also distinguishes input from output; that PEP does not provide universal-newline output. For current behavior, use the documentation for the specific language and runtime version in the project.

When exact bytes are part of the contract
Do not normalize away a requirement. If a fixture, generated file, protocol, or consumer requires CRLF (or LF), make that convention explicit in the test and repository policy, then assert the expected bytes. A test that silently accepts every newline style cannot catch a regression where the exact format is significant.
Quick Recap
A quick diagnosis checklist
- Compare bytes, not editor appearance: determine whether the failing input contains LF or CRLF and whether the assertion is byte-sensitive.
- Check the path’s attributes: inspect the matching rules in
.gitattributesfortext, eol, and binary handling. - Check local configuration: review
core.autocrlf,core.eol, andcore.safecrlfif conversion behavior is unexpected. - Check the test’s contract: decide whether it should compare normalized text or exact output bytes.
- Review recent normalization changes: examine staged and unstaged diffs before committing any repository-wide conversion.
