A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11A Laravel route usually returns 404 for one of four reasons: the request does not use the route’s exact HTTP method and URI, the route file was never loaded, Laravel is using a stale route cache, or the web server is not forwarding the request to Laravel’s front controller. Start with php artisan route:list, then determine whether the 404 came from the web server or from Laravel itself. That distinction tells you which layer to repair.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The most important deployment rule is that the virtual host must serve the application’s public directory and send dynamic requests to public/index.php. If php artisan serve works but Nginx or Apache returns 404 for deep links, the route is often fine and the front-controller rewrite is not.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
First, identify which system generated the 404
A 404 is only a symptom. Laravel can return one after receiving a request that matches no registered route, while Nginx or Apache can return one before PHP and Laravel run at all. Check the response body, headers, and server logs before changing application code.
| What you observe | Likely layer | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| A server-branded Nginx or Apache error page, or an entry in the web-server error log with no Laravel request | Web server | Virtual-host root, rewrite rules, try_files, PHP-FPM, and the requested host |
| Laravel’s normal error response or Laravel exception page | Application routing | route:list, method, URI, route file, middleware, and route cache |
| The home page works but every non-root URL is 404 | Usually front-controller routing | Document root and rewrite/fallback configuration |
The route works with php artisan serve but not through the real host |
Usually deployment configuration | Release directory, virtual host, PHP-FPM pool, and rewrite behavior |
This two-layer test prevents a common mistake: editing a perfectly valid Laravel route when the request never reaches Laravel. Conversely, adding rewrite rules cannot make an unregistered route match once the request is already inside the framework.

Run Laravel’s authoritative route check
From the application directory, run:
php artisan route:list
This is the first authoritative check for whether Laravel registered the route. Find the expected URI and verify its method, middleware, and controller or closure. For middleware details, use:
php artisan route:list -v
If the route is absent, Laravel cannot match it. Do not proceed to browser-cache troubleshooting until you know why it is missing.
Read the route table as a request contract
For a route such as:
Route::get('/reports', function () {
return 'Reports';
});
the table should contain a GET route whose URI is reports (Laravel displays URIs without the leading slash in the table). A controller route should show the controller action, and any group middleware should appear when you use -v.
If you expected a named route but only care about the URL, check the URI and method first. A route name does not change which incoming URL Laravel matches.
Make the HTTP method and URI match exactly
Laravel matches the incoming HTTP verb and path against the registered route. A Route::get('/reports', ...) route does not satisfy a POST request. This commonly happens when a form declares method="POST", a JavaScript request uses fetch with method: 'POST', or an API client is pointed at the wrong endpoint.

Check the verb
- Confirm the browser form’s
methodattribute. - Inspect the network request made by JavaScript, including redirects that may change how the request is replayed.
- Check the API client’s selected method rather than relying on the URL alone.
- Compare that verb with the method column in
php artisan route:list.
For a form that submits data, define and call the same method deliberately:
Route::post('/reports', [ReportController::class, 'store']);
If both reading and submitting the same path are intentional, register separate routes with the appropriate methods rather than assuming one route covers both.
Check the path, prefix, and slash
Compare the complete requested path with the route table. Look for:
- A missing group prefix, such as requesting
/reportswhen the route is registered under/admin/reports. - A route parameter, such as
/reports/{report}, that the request does not provide. - A typo in a segment or a different letter case on a case-sensitive server.
- An unexpected trailing slash. Whether
/reportsand/reports/are treated identically can depend on the request and server configuration, so test the exact URL shown in the route table and normalize links consistently. - A subdirectory or host prefix added by deployment, causing the browser to request a different path than the application expects.
Copy the path from the actual request in browser developer tools or the API client and compare it character by character with the registered URI. Do not infer it from the link’s visible label.
Confirm the route file is loaded by the application
Browser routes normally live in routes/web.php; applications may also configure other route files. Laravel’s directory structure places route definitions under the routes directory, while public/index.php is the entry point for incoming requests. A route written in an unconfigured file will not appear in route:list.

Use a controlled registration test
- Put a temporary, unmistakable route in the route file that the application is configured to load, for example
Route::get('/route-check', fn () => 'route loaded');. - Run
php artisan route:listand look forroute-check. - If it is absent, inspect the application’s bootstrap and route-loading configuration, file location, PHP syntax, and the release directory from which Artisan is running.
- Remove the temporary route after the test.
When a route appears in the list but the deployed site still cannot reach it, the problem has moved from registration to the request path, cache, or web-server layer.
Clear and deliberately rebuild route cache
Laravel can serve a cached route table. If you add or change routes while an old cache is active, the running application may continue using the previous definitions. Clear it after route changes:
php artisan route:clear
Run route:list again and test the request. In a deployment that intentionally uses cached routes, rebuild the cache only after the new route files are present:
php artisan route:cache
Laravel’s deployment guidance makes the operational consequence explicit: newly added routes require a fresh route cache. Treat cache generation as a release step, not as a permanent substitute for checking registration. Also make sure Artisan and PHP-FPM are operating on the same release directory; clearing a cache in one copy of the application does not change another copy.

Fix the web server’s document root and front controller
Laravel’s public directory contains index.php, “the entry point for all requests entering your application and configures autoloading,” according to the directory-structure documentation. The virtual host should therefore point to the application’s public directory, not the project root.

Nginx
For Nginx, the location handling ordinary requests needs a front-controller fallback equivalent to:
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$query_string;
The PHP location must pass /index.php to the intended PHP-FPM service. The exact socket or upstream name is environment-specific, so verify it against the PHP-FPM pool actually serving this release. After changing the server block, reload Nginx and check its error log.
Without the fallback, Nginx looks for a physical file or directory. A URL such as /reports has no corresponding file, so Nginx can emit its own 404 and Laravel never gets a chance to match the route. This is why a root page or static asset may work while every deep link fails.
Recommended Free Tools
Apache
Apache must serve the Laravel public directory and allow that directory’s rewrite configuration to operate. The virtual host needs overrides enabled as appropriate for the installation, and the rewrite module must be available. If Apache is serving the project root, or if rewrites are disabled, requests that should fall through to public/index.php can stop with an Apache 404.
Check the Apache virtual-host error log and confirm that the request is reaching the same public directory used by the deployed release. A rewrite change is incomplete until the virtual host has been reloaded.
Best Value
Why the project root is unsafe and unreliable
Pointing a web server at the project root exposes more than the public assets Laravel intends to serve and bypasses the documented entry-point layout. Even when the home page appears to work, deep links, asset paths, and sensitive project files can behave incorrectly. Set the document root to .../your-app/public and keep application code outside the web root.
Check the deployment context
A correct route can still appear broken when the request and the command are using different application instances. Verify each item below on the host that answers the failing URL:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The DNS name and virtual host are the ones you intended to test.
- The document root points to the current release’s
publicdirectory, not an older release or a project parent directory. - PHP-FPM uses the same PHP version and application path expected by that release.
- Environment and bootstrap changes have been applied to the active instance.
- Nginx or Apache was reloaded after configuration changes.
- The route cache was cleared or rebuilt in the active release.
Run php artisan route:list from the exact directory referenced by the deployment, then compare that output with the host serving the request. If the command shows the route but the host returns a server-branded 404, keep investigating the web-server path rather than changing the route definition.
Use fallback routes only for intentional unmatched requests
Route::fallback(...) handles requests that match no other route. It is useful when you want a controlled application response, such as a custom not-found page or a structured API error. It does not register a missing endpoint and cannot repair a broken rewrite or an incorrect document root.
Place fallback behavior after defining the real routes and use it deliberately. If a fallback response appears during troubleshooting, that proves the request reached Laravel; it does not prove that the intended route was registered or that its method and URI match.
Common scenarios and the shortest repair path
“It works with php artisan serve, but Nginx returns 404.”
- Inspect the response and confirm the 404 is Nginx-branded.
- Set the Nginx document root to
public. - Add or correct
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$query_string;. - Verify the PHP-FPM handler for
index.php. - Reload Nginx, then test a deep link again.
“The home page works; every other URL fails.”
Prioritize the front-controller fallback. The root URL may map to a physical directory or index file while a path such as /reports requires rewriting to Laravel. Confirm the server layer before editing route code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“I added a route, but Laravel still returns 404.”
- Run
php artisan route:list. - If the route is missing, check that it is in a loaded route file and that the active release contains the change.
- If it is present, compare the request verb and exact URI.
- Run
php artisan route:clearif an old route cache may be active. - Rebuild intentionally with
php artisan route:cachewhen that is part of the deployment process.
“A browser link works, but my form or API call returns 404.”
Inspect the actual HTTP method and path generated by the form or client. A link normally sends GET; a form or fetch call may send POST, PUT, or DELETE. Match that method to the route table and check any prefix or parameter in the generated URL.
A repeatable 404 checklist
- Classify the response as a web-server 404 or a Laravel 404.
- Run
php artisan route:list(and-vwhen middleware matters). - Compare the incoming HTTP method and complete URI with the listed route.
- Confirm the route is in a configured file under the application’s route-loading setup.
- Clear stale routes with
php artisan route:clear. - If caching is part of deployment, regenerate with
php artisan route:cache. - Verify the virtual host serves
publicand forwards dynamic requests topublic/index.php. - Check PHP-FPM, release paths, host selection, logs, and configuration reloads.
- Add a fallback route only when you intentionally want controlled handling of unmatched requests.
Laravel’s routing documentation summarizes the application-side result plainly: when no route matches, “Otherwise, Laravel will return a 404 HTTP response.” The fix is therefore to establish which layer failed, then correct the matching contract or the front-controller path at that layer.
