If Kotlin println() output is missing from Android Logcat, use Android’s logging API instead: for example, Log.d("MainActivity", "Loaded"). println() writes to standard output; android.util.Log creates a prioritized, tagged Android log entry designed to be viewed in Logcat. Android’s documentation does not guarantee that standard output will appear there uniformly across devices, Android versions, and IDE configurations.
Why println() may not appear in Logcat
println() writes to a process’s standard output stream. Android’s logging system is a separate route: the platform sends structured entries—with a priority, tag, and message—through logging facilities to logd. The Android Logcat command-line documentation describes this system and identifies the main buffer as the location for most application logs.

Because standard output and Android log entries are not the same thing, don’t rely on println() as a consistent way to write messages to Logcat. Use android.util.Log for app messages you need to find there.
Replace println() with an Android log call

For priority-based logging in a single call, Android also provides Log.println(priority, tag, message). It is distinct from Kotlin’s println(): the Android method writes a structured Android log entry. See the Android Log API reference for method details.
Check Logcat if an Android log call is also missing
A message can be emitted correctly but hidden by the selected device, buffer, severity threshold, or filter. Work through these checks in order.

- Open the right Logcat window and device. In Android Studio, go to View > Tool Windows > Logcat, select the device or emulator running your app, and run the app. Make sure Logcat is following current output, not paused or left scrolled away from new entries. Android Studio describes Logcat as showing app and system messages in real time in its Logcat guide.
- Clear restrictive Android Studio query terms. Remove filters for package, process, tag, message, severity, or age that could exclude the entry. If an
age:query behaves unexpectedly, check the computer’s clock: Android Studio evaluates that filter against the host timestamp. - Check command-line buffers and filters separately. When using
adb logcat, inspect the selected buffer and its filter expression. Android documents buffers includingmain,system, andcrash, and examples such asMyApp:Dand*:S. These are command-line filter expressions; they are not Android Studio’s query syntax. See the command-line documentation. - Confirm the priority threshold for low-severity entries. The command-line documentation says the default minimum application logging priority is INFO when relevant system properties are not set; system properties can change that threshold. If a debug-level
Log.d()entry is missing, check the applicable logging configuration. This priority setting concerns Android log entries, not standard-output redirection.
Log exceptions with the Android logging API
For exception diagnostics, pass the throwable to a suitable Log method so its stack trace is recorded with the message. Android’s debugging guidance includes Kotlin logging examples and advises removing development log messages and stack-trace print calls before publishing an app.

Keep the two failure points separate
There are two different questions to troubleshoot: did the code write an Android log entry, and is Logcat showing that entry? Switching from println() to Log.d() addresses the first by using Android’s logging API. Checking the device, filters, buffer, and priority threshold addresses the second.
