Why Keyword Search Finds the Facts but Drops Their Sources

A search result is not a citation. Learn where provenance can break between ingestion, retrieval, answer generation, and the interface—and how to check it.

Finding a fact and preserving where it came from are separate jobs. Keyword search can retrieve a relevant passage, but an agent’s answer will only be traceable if the retrieval response’s references survive answer generation and the app renders them as citations. In an Oracle-to-Azure workflow, check each handoff; adding a Sanity Knowledge Base does not, by itself, repair a missing citation.

How can search find the right passage but lose its source?

Retrieval decides which content is relevant to a question. Provenance is the information that lets someone trace that content back to its source. A search result can contain the useful text while the answer layer receives, discards, or fails to display the metadata needed to identify the document.

That makes “the answer is correct” and “the answer cites its source” two different outcomes. Keyword search may match exact words, phrases, or identifiers; hybrid search combines keyword matching with vector ranking to account for semantic similarity. Neither retrieval mode guarantees that a citation will appear in the final interface. Oracle describes the distinction between keyword-only and hybrid search in its hybrid-search documentation.

Where provenance can break in the pipeline

Trace the answer through five observable stages. The retrieval service owns the content it indexes and the references it returns; the application or agent layer must preserve those references; the user interface must turn them into useful citations.

  1. Ingestion and text extraction: Confirm that the source was fetched, parsed, and stored, and that its text can actually be extracted. A file that exists in a repository but was not ingested—or yielded no searchable text—cannot reliably support a citation.
  2. Chunking and retrieval: Content is divided into units suitable for retrieval. Search selects relevant units, but the selected text alone is not the same as source metadata.
  3. Reference metadata: Inspect the retrieval response and identify the reference associated with each result. Keep that reference attached to its retrieved content as the answer is assembled.
  4. Answer synthesis: The model or agent composes an answer from retrieved material. If the application passes only the text onward, or fails to retain its association with a reference, the answer may no longer have enough information to cite its sources.
  5. Citation rendering: The app maps the answer’s references to whatever citation information is available and displays links or source labels. A reference returned by a service is not automatically a visible citation in the app.

Azure references, document keys, and citation URLs are different

Azure AI Search distinguishes indexed knowledge sources from remote sources queried at request time. An indexed source has a backing index and can provide service-generated citation URLs. A remote source is queried when the request is made and does not return an index citation URL. Azure can surface remote results alongside indexed knowledge sources, but that does not make the remote result an indexed document.

For an indexed result, keep these identifiers distinct:

  • Reference ID: Identifies a retrieved reference for linking the result to a citation in the response. It is not the document’s key.
  • Index document key: Identifies a document in the backing index. Do not treat it as interchangeable with the response’s reference ID.
  • Source document URL: The location of the original material, if one is available to your application.
  • Citation URL: In the documented preview behavior, an authenticated lookup into the backing index. It is not necessarily the same URL as the original source document.

Microsoft documents the indexed-versus-remote distinction in What is a Knowledge Source? and describes reference fields and preview citation-URL behavior in Query Knowledge Base via API or MCP. The practical implication is to inspect the actual response your application receives, then verify how each returned reference is mapped and rendered. Do not manufacture a citation URL from a document key or assume a remote result has an index citation URL.

What changes when a Sanity Knowledge Base is involved?

Sanity’s Context Knowledge Bases are an opt-in beta, not a documented automatic bridge between an Oracle agent and Azure AI Search. Sanity says a build reconciles sources ahead of query time and makes the resulting entries available through Context MCP. Its documentation states: “Each entry is a Markdown document written from the Knowledge Base’s sources, with citations back to the original source.” See Sanity’s Knowledge Bases documentation.

That source-citation behavior applies to entries produced by that feature. It does not establish that a separate Azure retrieval response, Oracle agent, or custom answer-rendering layer will automatically retain or display those citations. Treat the systems as separate stages unless your implementation explicitly connects their references and has verified the result. Sanity identifies the feature as beta, so availability and limits may change.

How to diagnose missing citations in an Oracle agent

Oracle describes its Knowledge Agent ingestion process as crawling, parsing, storing, chunking, embedding, and ingestion. When an expected document is absent from citations, start by checking whether the document completed the relevant ingestion path, whether it contains extractable text, and whether it is among the agent’s selected sources.

“Answers do not cite expected documents | Confirm the document was ingested, contains extractable text, and is included in the agent’s selected sources.”

This is Oracle’s troubleshooting guidance in its Knowledge Agents documentation. Once those checks pass, inspect the later handoffs too: whether the retrieval result includes a reference, whether the agent or application keeps it associated with the relevant text, and whether the interface displays it. Fixing ingestion will not correct a separate rendering or mapping failure.

Which Azure API version should an implementation use?

Use the API release that matches the capabilities you need rather than copying a preview example into a production path without checking its status. Microsoft’s Agentic Retrieval Overview identifies these version boundaries:

API version Documented scope What to keep in mind
2026-04-01 Production workloads using generally available knowledge source types with minimal extractive retrieval. Use this documented generally available path when its scope fits the implementation.
2026-08-01-preview Preview capabilities including query planning and answer synthesis. Preview features are not the same as the generally available production scope; verify their status and behavior before depending on them.

These are API release labels, not measures of citation accuracy or retrieval quality. Version selection also does not remove the need to preserve references and render citations in the application.

A practical provenance check for the whole workflow

  • At ingestion: Verify source selection, successful processing, and extractable text.
  • At retrieval: Record the returned result and its reference metadata; establish whether the source is indexed or remote.
  • At synthesis: Confirm that each piece of retrieved text remains associated with its reference as the answer is generated.
  • At rendering: Test that the displayed citation resolves to the intended source or supported citation lookup, and do not substitute one identifier for another.
  • At release time: Check the API version and feature status used by each component, especially when preview or beta capabilities are involved.

The title’s Oracle-to-Azure-on-Sanity scenario is best understood as a provenance problem across system boundaries, not a documented, tested integration. The official documentation establishes useful behaviors for each product, but it does not establish comparative citation performance or guarantee that this exact combination will pass source references end to end. Verify the response and rendered citation at every handoff.
