Why Jellyfin storage keeps growing and how to find what is using disk space

Jellyfin storage can grow in the database, cache, logs, activity history, media, or temporary transcodes. Learn how to locate the active paths, measure each one, identify playback-driven growth, and use Jellyfin’s maintenance tasks without deleting important data.

Jellyfin storage usually grows in several independent places: your original media, the server database, cache, logs, activity logs, and temporary transcoding files. The fastest way to find the cause is to identify Jellyfin’s active data, cache, log, and transcode paths, measure each one separately, and then correlate the largest directory with playback and maintenance activity.

Do not delete the database or media while investigating. Cache, logs, activity logs, and completed transcode files are the areas Jellyfin provides maintenance tasks for; even there, confirm the path and task target before removing anything.

What can make Jellyfin storage grow?

A Jellyfin installation is not a single folder with one type of data. Different components grow for different reasons, and the same symptom—less free space—can therefore require a different fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Storage area What it contains Why it grows How to treat it
Original media Movies, episodes, music, photos, and other files in your libraries You add higher-resolution, higher-bitrate, or additional files Permanent content; never treat it as disposable cache
Server data and database Configuration, library records, metadata indexes, users, playback state, and the SQLite database Library size, metadata, activity, and configuration history Important application data; back it up and do not manually delete database files
Cache Regenerable artwork, images, and other temporary server data Browsing libraries, image generation, and server activity Use Jellyfin’s cache-clearing task after verifying the configured cache path
Logs and activity logs Server events, playback records, diagnostics, and user activity Normal operation, long retention, or verbose/debug logging Use the log and activity-log maintenance tasks; turn off debug logging after troubleshooting
Transcode directory Temporary FFmpeg output created while a stream is being converted Clients that cannot direct-play a file, subtitle or audio incompatibility, quality conversion, or multiple simultaneous sessions Temporary but potentially very large; use the transcode cleanup task

There is no universal Jellyfin growth rate. Usage depends on library contents, metadata, client capabilities, playback settings, logging, storage layout, and how often people watch or seek through media.

The database can be much larger than expected

Jellyfin uses SQLite by default and stores jellyfin.db in its data directory. Jellyfin’s storage documentation gives a broad example of 10 to 100 GB for a database serving a moderate-sized library. That is an illustrative range, not a typical annual growth rate or a promise that your installation should reach either value. A large database should prompt measurement of the whole data directory and a backup, not immediate deletion of database files.

Cache and logs are separate from the database

The cache and log directories can be configured independently. A cache spike often follows library browsing or image work, while logs can grow rapidly when detailed diagnostics are enabled. Jellyfin notes that debug logging produces a large amount of output and should be enabled only while actively troubleshooting.

Transcoding creates temporary demand

Transcoding is often the reason free space disappears suddenly during playback. Jellyfin’s documentation says a transcode directory may need about as much space as the original media when output is produced at an equivalent bitrate. Its example uses a 50 GB Blu-ray remux that could produce approximately 60 GB of output, or as little as 15 GB with a different conversion. Those figures illustrate how widely output can vary; they are not a sizing formula for every file or session.

Find Jellyfin’s active paths before measuring anything

Path locations depend on how Jellyfin was installed. Command-line options and environment variables can override platform defaults, and containers or appliances add another layer because a path inside Jellyfin may map to a different host volume or dataset. A path copied from another installation is not evidence that your server uses the same location.

Check the running configuration

  1. Open the administrator dashboard and locate the server’s path information. The exact label can vary by Jellyfin version, so look for the section that lists data, cache, log, and transcoding locations.
  2. If Jellyfin runs as a service, inspect its service definition and startup parameters for path options and environment variables. Record the values used by the running service, not just values in an old installer or shell profile.
  3. For Docker or another container runtime, inspect the volume mappings. Write down both sides of each mapping: the path Jellyfin sees and the host directory, dataset, or volume that actually consumes disk space.
  4. For an appliance deployment, check the application’s storage settings and dataset mounts. A container path may look small from inside the application while the host dataset is nearly full.

Keep a simple inventory containing the data directory, cache directory, log directory, transcode directory, media roots, filesystem, and mount point. This prevents you from measuring an unused default folder while the active installation writes somewhere else.

Keep media on network storage, but keep the database local

Jellyfin’s storage guidance recommends mounting a network filesystem directly to the operating system for media access. It also recommends keeping the database on local storage rather than placing SQLite database files on a network share. This arrangement reduces the risk of network latency or share interruptions affecting database operations.

Measure each directory separately

Once the active paths are known, compare them independently. Start with the four server-managed paths, then inspect media roots. Measuring the parent disk alone tells you that space is missing, but not which Jellyfin function is responsible.

Linux and macOS

On a Unix-like host, replace the example paths with the locations from your configuration inventory:

du -sh /path/to/jellyfin/data /path/to/jellyfin/cache /path/to/jellyfin/log /path/to/jellyfin/transcodes

To see which immediate subdirectories dominate one path, run:

du -xhd1 /path/to/jellyfin/data | sort -h

Run the same command for cache, logs, and transcodes. The -x option keeps the result on the same filesystem, which helps prevent a mounted media share from being mixed into the server-data total. On systems whose du implementation does not support these flags, use its local equivalent or inspect the directory in a graphical disk-usage tool.

Windows PowerShell

For a quick view of the largest files under a configured path, use:

Get-ChildItem -LiteralPath 'D:Jellyfindata' -Recurse -File -Force | Sort-Object Length -Descending | Select-Object -First 25 FullName,Length

Repeat the command with the cache, log, and transcode paths. To total a directory, PowerShell can sum file lengths:

Large libraries can take time to scan. If a command reports access errors, run it with an account that can read the Jellyfin directories, or use the operating system’s storage analyzer.

Containers and datasets

Measure the host-side directory or dataset, not only the path shown inside the container. If the transcode path is mapped to a temporary volume, the host may report usage in a different mount point. Also check whether a container has an internal writable layer that was accidentally used instead of a persistent volume; that layer can fill without appearing in the directory you expected.

Determine whether playback is creating the growth

Jellyfin distinguishes four playback outcomes. The dashboard’s active-session view identifies which one is in use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Playback mode What Jellyfin does Expected storage effect
Direct Play Serves the original file without modification Normally no large transcode output
Remux Repacks compatible streams into a different container May create temporary output, generally less work than a full video conversion
Direct Stream Leaves the video stream intact while adapting incompatible stream or container details Can still use temporary processing space
Transcode Processes the video stream into a format, bitrate, resolution, or codec the client can play Potentially large files and sustained writes in the transcode directory

Correlate directory size with active sessions

  1. Open the administrator dashboard while the storage increase is occurring.
  2. Review active sessions and note the playback mode for each stream.
  3. Record the client, source file, requested quality, subtitle choice, and whether more than one session is transcoding.
  4. Measure the transcode directory again after stopping a session. A rapid increase during playback strongly points to temporary FFmpeg output rather than permanent library growth.

Subtitle burn-in, unsupported audio, a browser with limited codec support, remote-stream quality limits, and a client requesting a lower resolution can all turn an otherwise compatible file into a transcode. The dashboard tells you what Jellyfin is doing for that specific session; do not infer the mode from the file extension alone.

Use FFmpeg logs when a transcode fails

When a playback attempt fails or the transcode directory stops growing at a suspicious point, inspect the corresponding FFmpeg log in the configured log location. Look for messages about an unavailable input, unsupported codec, permission failure, or an output filesystem that ran out of space. The log explains the failing operation; the directory measurement establishes whether capacity was actually exhausted.

Use Jellyfin’s maintenance tasks for supported cleanup

Jellyfin’s Tasks documentation says scheduled operations run periodically by default and can also be triggered manually with the run button. Use those tasks after confirming the active paths:

Task Appropriate target Important caution
Clear Cache Folder Regenerable cache contents Artwork and other cached data may need to be recreated later
Clear Log Folder Older or accumulated server logs Preserve logs needed for an unresolved incident
Clear Activity Logs Historical activity records Removes history you may need for auditing or troubleshooting
Clear Transcodes Folder Completed or abandoned temporary transcode files Do not run it while you are relying on active transcodes unless you accept interrupted playback

Open the administrator dashboard’s Scheduled Tasks area, locate the relevant task, and click its run control. After it completes, measure the same directory again. A task that reports success but does not reduce the expected path usually means you measured the wrong location, another process is writing new files, or the files are not eligible for that task.

Do not manually remove irreplaceable data

Manual deletion is not a safe first response to a full disk. Never remove jellyfin.db, the rest of the data directory, or original media merely because it is large. Database corruption, lost users, missing metadata, and broken library state can follow. If a directory is not clearly regenerable, stop and make a backup before changing it.

Check mounts before running library-related maintenance

Jellyfin warns that maintenance involving collections and playlists can lose entries if media is unavailable when the task runs. A common example is a network share that has not mounted after reboot. Before scheduled cleanup or library maintenance:

  • Confirm every media filesystem is mounted at its normal operating-system path.
  • Verify that the Jellyfin service account can read the directories.
  • Check that the mount is available at the time scheduled tasks start, not only when you test interactively.
  • Do not interpret a temporarily empty mount as proof that media was deleted or moved.

Use service-manager dependencies, automount settings, or a delayed task schedule where necessary so Jellyfin starts after the media mounts are ready.

Choose storage locations that match the workload

Separating configuration, cache, logs, and transcodes into different paths makes diagnosis easier and prevents one workload from consuming the space needed by another. Compare placements using four practical criteria:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Criterion Questions to ask
Available capacity Can the filesystem absorb a large temporary transcode while retaining headroom for the database and logs?
Local versus network storage Is the path local and reliable for the database, and is network media mounted directly by the operating system?
Transcoding workload How many concurrent sessions can occur, and do clients commonly require video conversion?
Isolation Are config, cache, and transcodes on separate paths or datasets so a spike in one does not fill the entire server volume?

RAM-backed transcode storage

Some deployments place transcode files in RAM-backed temporary storage to reduce disk writes. This is a capacity trade-off, not a universal optimization. TrueNAS SCALE documentation for version 24.10.0 or later warns that insufficient RAM can cause a transcode to fail and emphasizes providing enough free space for the output. A RAM-backed path must therefore be sized for the largest realistic concurrent workload, with memory reserved for the operating system and Jellyfin itself.

Diagnose the most common growth patterns

The transcode directory jumps only while someone is watching

Check active sessions and playback modes first. If one or more sessions show Transcode, compare the directory before and after playback. End abandoned sessions, then run Clear Transcodes Folder when no active stream depends on those files. If this happens frequently, review client compatibility, requested quality, subtitle handling, and available free space rather than repeatedly deleting files during playback.

The transcode directory remains large after playback ends

Aborted sessions can leave temporary files behind. Confirm that no session is still active, inspect the FFmpeg logs if a stream failed, and run the supported transcode cleanup task. If the directory refills immediately, another client or scheduled job is still requesting conversion.

Logs grow far faster than media

Check logging verbosity and whether debug logging was enabled for a past incident. Jellyfin describes debug output as very large and unsuitable for long-term use. Restore normal logging after collecting the evidence you need, preserve logs for an unresolved problem, and then use Clear Log Folder for files that no longer need to be retained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cache is the largest server-managed directory

Confirm that the path is genuinely Jellyfin’s cache rather than the data directory or media. Run Clear Cache Folder and measure again. Cache clearing can temporarily increase CPU, network, or disk activity as artwork is regenerated; it does not reduce the size of original media or the SQLite database.

The data directory is tens of gigabytes

Separate the database from logs, metadata, and other data before judging it. Jellyfin’s 10-to-100-GB example for a moderate library is broad and does not diagnose corruption. Back up the data directory, check whether activity or metadata volume explains the size, and use documented maintenance operations instead of deleting database tables or files.

The server reports low space during a transcode

Measure the filesystem that actually holds the transcode output, including a host dataset when containers are involved. Keep enough free capacity for the expected output and concurrent sessions. On RAM-backed storage, verify available memory rather than disk capacity alone. An output that cannot continue to be written can cause the transcode to fail even when the source media is readable.

A repeatable storage-audit routine

  1. Record the active data, cache, log, and transcode paths after every installation change.
  2. Measure those paths individually and save the totals with the date.
  3. When growth is observed, note whether anyone is streaming, which playback mode is active, and whether debug logging is enabled.
  4. Inspect the largest directory and its newest files before deleting anything.
  5. Run the matching Jellyfin maintenance task and measure the result.
  6. Keep the database local, ensure network media mounts before maintenance, and maintain a backup of server data.
  7. Recheck free space after the next normal playback session to confirm that the underlying cause—not just the old files—has been addressed.

This process distinguishes permanent media growth from temporary playback work and from diagnostic output. It also gives you a defensible record of what changed, which path consumed it, and which supported task reclaimed the space.
