Why Japanese Text Looks Different Across Devices and Browsers

Japanese text can render differently across devices because of font coverage, fallback, web-font loading, glyph variants, or incorrect decoding. Here’s how to tell the symptoms apart and what to check.

A Japanese page can look correct on your device and still show boxes, blanks, different-looking glyphs, garbled text, or changed line breaks on someone else’s. The causes are not all the same: font coverage and fallback affect which glyph appears, while an encoding problem can change which characters the browser reads in the first place.

First identify what looks wrong

The visible symptom helps narrow the problem. A square box or blank suggests that the active font—or the application’s fallback process—may not provide a usable glyph. Legible Japanese characters in an unexpected style point more toward a different font or alternate glyph form. Unrelated garbled characters suggest a decoding problem such as mojibake.

These clues are not a page-specific diagnosis: without the page, screenshot, browser, and operating system, it is not possible to identify the exact cause. Unicode’s Display Problems? guidance describes tofu-like symbols as a typical symptom when font support for characters is lacking. It also explains that a system may have a suitable font installed while an application’s own font-selection or fallback behavior still fails to use it.

How Japanese text can differ between readers

Missing glyphs and fallback

A font may not cover every character on a page. The browser or application then needs to find another font that does. If no suitable glyph is selected, readers may see a tofu box, another replacement symbol, or a blank. The presence of a font somewhere on the device does not guarantee that the application will use it.

Different fonts and regional glyph forms

When characters remain legible but their shapes differ, readers may be seeing different typefaces or different alternate glyph forms for East Asian scripts. CSS’s font-variant-east-asian property lets authors request alternate glyph forms, including for Japanese. It does not add missing characters to a font or correct text decoded with the wrong encoding. See MDN’s documentation for font-variant-east-asian.

Web-font loading and layout changes

If a downloadable web font has not loaded when text is first rendered, a browser may show a fallback font. When the intended font becomes available, the change in font metrics can alter line breaks, spacing, and page geometry. W3C’s CSS Fonts Module Level 3 discusses fallback rendering and recommends choosing fallback fonts with metrics close to the web font to reduce large reflows.

Wrong decoding and mojibake

Encoding and font support are separate checks. If text is decoded incorrectly, the browser may display unexpected characters: this is different from a correctly decoded character for which no suitable glyph can be displayed. A font change cannot repair incorrect decoding, and changing an encoding declaration will not add missing glyphs.

What to check on a page that looks different

  1. Describe the symptom. Record whether you see boxes or blanks, legible characters with unexpected shapes, changed line breaks, or garbled unrelated characters.
  2. Check the text decoding. Inspect the page’s encoding declaration and confirm that the text is being interpreted as intended. If characters are garbled, investigate decoding rather than treating the problem as a font-only issue.
  3. Inspect the font stack and font coverage. Check the page’s declared fonts and whether the active font covers the affected characters. Remember that application fallback behavior can matter even when a suitable font is installed.
  4. Check downloadable font loading. Confirm that web-font resources load successfully, then compare the initial fallback rendering with the page after the intended font is available.
  5. Compare environments. Test the same text in the browsers and operating systems your audience uses, noting installed fonts and whether web fonts loaded. Differences are troubleshooting clues, not proof that a particular browser or operating system is defective.
  6. Check for intentional glyph variants. If the shapes are legible but differ in form, review whether font-variant-east-asian is requesting alternate East Asian glyphs.

Japanese layout is more than font selection

Japanese web typography also involves script-specific layout and presentation requirements. W3C’s Japanese Script Resources, a Group Note Draft dated 20 March 2026, brings together resources on Japanese text layout and presentation across HTML, CSS, mobile web, and digital publications. It is intended in part for browser and web implementers and identifies fallback-font expectations as an area to examine. This standards-oriented context is useful when the issue extends beyond whether a font contains a particular character.
