Optimized Battery Charging does not pause every charge at 80%. It learns your routine and delays the final part of charging only when your iPhone predicts it will stay connected to power for a long time. Irregular charging, short sessions, a new location, or a setting can explain why it reaches 100% instead.
First, check whether the behavior is normal
When Optimized Battery Charging engages, your iPhone may hold at about 80% and finish charging closer to the time it expects you to unplug it. Battery settings or the Lock Screen may show when charging is expected to finish. If an option appears to finish sooner, choose Resume Charging or Charge Now.

If it charges straight to 100%, that does not by itself mean the feature is broken. Apple describes activation as dependent on learned habits and a prediction that the phone will remain connected for an extended period.

Apple says the feature needs at least 14 days after setup to learn charging habits. It also requires at least nine charges lasting five hours or more in a given location. These are eligibility thresholds, not a promise that every qualifying charge will pause at 80%.

Keep a reasonably consistent charging routine in a place where you spend significant time, such as home or work. Frequent travel, changing charge times, short charging sessions, or using a new location can make the feature less likely to activate.

Allow the location settings used for activation
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance says to enable the relevant location options at Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services. Check that Location Services, System Customization, and Significant Locations are enabled. Depending on locale or iOS version, the labels may appear as “System Customisation” or “Significant Locations & Routes.” Apple says location information used for this feature is not sent to Apple. See If Optimized Battery Charging doesn’t activate.

Tell an 80% pause from other charging limits
- Optimized Battery Charging: A learned routine and expected long connection cause a temporary pause, with charging due to finish closer to your usual unplug time.
- Charge Limit: On iPhone 15 or later, this is the limit you selected. A limit below 100% can account for the phone stopping below full without Optimized Battery Charging being the cause.
- Clean Energy Charging: This is separate from optimized charging. Apple describes it as available in the United States; when a cleaner-energy forecast is available, it may delay charging. Details are in the iPhone User Guide.
- Temperature protection: If the iPhone gets too warm, software can limit charging above 80%. This is a temperature-related protection, not evidence that the routine-learning feature has failed.

When to troubleshoot the cable or seek service
A new charger is not a fix for Optimized Battery Charging that simply does not activate. Check the physical charging setup only if the phone will not charge, charges unusually slowly, or shows an accessory alert. Apple’s separate steps include checking the cable and adapter, trying a wall outlet, clearing debris from the charging port, and restarting the iPhone. If the problem persists, seek service using Apple’s guidance for an iPhone that won’t charge.
