In Microsoft Edge, “homepage” can mean three different things: the page opened by the home button, the page shown when Edge starts, or the page and content on a new tab. Each has its own setting. Identify when the unexpected page appears, then change the matching option under Settings > Start, home, and new tab page.
First, identify which page is wrong
Notice what you do immediately before the unexpected page appears. The home-button destination, Edge’s startup behavior, and the new-tab page are separate controls, even though Microsoft groups them in the same settings area. Microsoft’s overview of Edge startup and new-tab options and its guide to Edge settings describe these as distinct choices.

- After clicking the home icon: Check the home-button setting.
- When Edge launches: Check the startup behavior.
- After opening a new tab: Check new-tab settings and extensions that may alter them.
Set the home button’s destination
- In Edge, select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then select Settings.
- Open Start, home, and new tab page.
- Turn on Show home button on the toolbar.
- Choose New tab page or select Enter URL and enter the address you want the button to open.
If the home icon is not visible, make sure its display option is enabled. These steps are Microsoft’s documented instructions for Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels may change as Edge is updated. See Microsoft’s home-page instructions.

Choose what Edge shows at startup or in a new tab
When Edge starts
Go to Settings > Start, home, and new tab page and choose the startup behavior you want. This controls what appears when you launch Edge; it does not set the destination for the home button.

When you open a new tab
New-tab layout and content are configured separately from the home-button destination. If a new tab shows something unexpected, review the new-tab options in the same settings area. Microsoft notes that some extensions can change new-tab settings, so continue with the extension checks below if the setting does not stick. Microsoft’s Edge overview covers startup and new-tab customization.
Check extensions if the page changes or new tabs are affected
Some extensions can change new-tab settings. Microsoft recommends selecting your preferred setting and disabling extensions that modify it. Edge may also turn off extensions that try to change important default settings without permission. See Microsoft’s extension FAQ and its explanation of why Edge turns off some extensions.

- Open Settings > Extensions > Manage extensions, or enter
edge://extensionsin the address bar. - Review extensions related to new tabs, search, or browsing appearance. Disable a relevant extension and check whether the page behavior changes.
- If you need the extension, check its own settings for a new-tab option, or contact its publisher for help.
Change one extension at a time so you can identify which one affects the behavior. If an extension is marked as managed by your organization, do not try to remove or override it without checking with your employer’s or school’s IT team.

Work or school administrators can apply browser policies that control settings or extensions. Enter edge://extensions to look for an organization-managed indicator on extensions, and enter edge://policy to inspect policies applied to Edge. Microsoft describes these checks in its extension FAQ. If the browser or extension is managed, ask your organization’s IT team whether the setting is intentional.

Try general Edge troubleshooting only if the issue is broader
If Edge has problems beyond the homepage setting, Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance includes updating, restarting, and repairing the browser. Repair is not the first step for a setting that simply needs to be changed; Microsoft says repairing Edge should not affect browser data and settings. Follow the current instructions in Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guide.
