A partial clog can cause weak or uneven flow, while a printer that stops extruding mid-print may have a different problem, such as heat creep. The symptom narrows the possibilities, but the correct clearing or repair procedure depends on your printer model.
Start with the symptom
Before changing settings or taking the hotend apart, note what the printer is doing. These clues help distinguish a feed-path problem from a likely clog or a mid-print failure.

Check whether filament can reach the hotend
If filament will not load, first check for a spool snag or a kink and make sure the route into the extruder is aligned rather than sharply bent. Then inspect accessible drive-gear teeth for packed filament and look for gear misalignment. Prusa includes gummed-up gear teeth and misalignment among the checks for filament-loading problems in its filament-loading troubleshooting guide.
If the filament reaches the extruder but is not being gripped or advanced, clearing the nozzle may not solve the problem. Check the feed mechanism as well as the hotend, especially if you hear clicking or see ground filament.

Check for a clogged or partially clogged hotend
A blockage is plausible when filament loads but does not emerge, or when it comes out inconsistently. During a loading attempt, watch whether filament flows and whether it curls toward or sticks to the nozzle. A partial clog may still let some filament through, so seeing a little flow does not rule one out. Clicking or grinding can mean the extruder is struggling against resistance, but it is not a definitive clog diagnosis.
For Prusa’s CORE One, CORE One L, XL, MK4/S, and MK3.9/S families, the clogged-nozzle guide describes model-specific cleaning approaches, including pushing filament through a heated hotend and cold pulls on supported models. Follow the instructions for your exact printer; do not transfer temperatures or disassembly steps to another model. The guide also cautions against loading filament while a needle is inserted.

If extrusion stops during a print
A printer that starts normally and then stops extruding deserves a separate diagnosis from one that never feeds filament. Prusa’s troubleshooting index for extrusion stopping during printing lists heat creep as an issue to investigate. Check the guide for your printer and its hotend and cooling instructions instead of assuming the nozzle tip is the only possible cause.
Choose a clearing or replacement procedure for your model
Manufacturer instructions differ by printer and hotend. Prusa’s guide for the MK3.5, MK3S+, and MK2.5S and its guide for newer model families describe procedures for those machines, not a universal method. Use your own manufacturer’s documentation for temperatures, tools, and disassembly. If the printer reports a temperature fault, stop trying to force extrusion and consult that model’s troubleshooting instructions.

If the model-specific cleaning procedure does not restore flow, nozzle replacement may be necessary. The CORE One/XL/MK4/S/MK3.9/S guide notes that a blockage can be farther up than the nozzle tip. Before buying a replacement, verify that the nozzle matches both your printer and hotend, and check whether the diagnosis calls for a nozzle alone or a larger hotend assembly. There is no single nozzle type or replacement part established for every printer.

If filament flows again during loading or a test extrusion, that is a useful sign that the immediate blockage may have cleared. Run a small test print and check that extrusion remains consistent before relying on the printer for a longer job.
