The innings came in a different format and under different match conditions, so “more valuable” is the writer’s judgment—not a statistical verdict that an 80 is inherently worth more than a hundred.
Why Srivastava rates Kishan’s innings so highly
Hindustan Times reports that Kishan made 80 not out from 46 balls in an Asian Games semifinal against Sri Lanka, batting at No. 5. The account says India were 59/3 after 6.2 overs when he came in and finished on 169/7. These match details are attributed to that article; the official scorecard is not independently available here for confirmation.

He entered after an early collapse
At 59/3, Kishan was not joining a settled innings. Srivastava’s argument is that he had to help rebuild and keep the scoring moving after India had already lost three wickets. That makes the moment of entry central to the comparison: the same number of runs can serve a different purpose depending on what the innings needs.
He adapted to a different batting role
The article highlights that Kishan batted at No. 5 rather than his customary No. 3. It presents that flexibility as part of his contribution: he took on a middle-order role in a semifinal rather than relying on the position where he is more familiar.

He had limited support and stayed to the end
Srivastava says Kishan had little support at the other end and continued through to the finish. In that telling, his 80 not out helped carry India to 169/7 on a surface described as less batting-friendly than Guwahati. The case is about the work his innings did for the team total, not simply its strike rate or headline number.
Why the comparison with Gill and Rohit is not a like-for-like contest
Hindustan Times contrasts Kishan’s 80 with Gill’s reported 223 not out and Rohit’s 101 in India’s separate second ODI against West Indies, a chase of 406 at Guwahati. These are different matches and formats. A fair comparison therefore asks what each innings had to accomplish, rather than treating the totals as if they were scored under identical conditions.

The International Cricket Council account covers the first India–West Indies ODI, not the second match in Srivastava’s comparison. It reports Gill scored 110, Rohit was out in the 12th over, and the second ODI was scheduled for September 30. Those first-match figures cannot be substituted for the second-ODI figures reported by Hindustan Times.
Does match situation matter more than a century?
It can change how an innings is judged, but it does not create a universal rule that a lower score is more valuable. A useful assessment considers the format, pitch, match state when the batter arrived, batting role, wickets and support at the other end, contribution to the team total, and the result. In this instance, Srivastava puts particular weight on Kishan’s entry after three wickets had fallen, his No. 5 role, the reported lack of support, and the total India reached.

Calling Kishan’s innings more “enjoyable” is also a matter of the writer’s perspective: a recovery under pressure can make for a compelling story. It is not a measurable statistic, and the contrast does not prove that his innings was objectively superior to Gill’s or Rohit’s across different matches.

The key point is the distinction between a claim about context and a claim about objective ranking. Srivastava argues that Kishan’s knock was worth more in its particular situation; the evidence described supports explaining that argument, not declaring a definitive statistical winner among innings in separate matches and formats.
