Random YouTube subscriptions are usually caused by one of two things: an unintentional action on a shared/signed-in device, or something more serious like account compromise.
In 2024, the fix is less about guessing and more about auditing your account activity, removing suspicious access, and then cleaning up any apps or sessions that could be making changes on your behalf.

What It Means When YouTube Subscribes You to Channels
When YouTube “subscribes” you to a channel, your account’s subscription list is being modified—either by you (or someone using your account) or by an app/session with permission to act as you.
Recommendations can make it feel like you’re being “subscribed” (more suggested channels, Shorts from new creators), but true subscriptions show up in your Subscription list with a checked/active Subscribed state.

Most Common Legitimate Reasons (Not a Hack)
Before you assume your account is compromised, check the everyday explanations. They’re surprisingly common—especially with multiple devices and logged-in sessions.
Someone is using your account (shared device or family)
If your iPhone, Android, TV, tablet, or browser is shared, another person can easily hit Subscribe while scrolling.
This includes situations like roommates, kids, or a partner who uses your phone while you’re logged in.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou hit Subscribe by accident (mis-taps and fast scrolling)
On mobile, it’s easy to tap the red Subscribe button while quickly swiping through Shorts or channel pages.
On some layouts, the Subscribe control can sit close to other tap targets, so a tiny mis-tap can do exactly what it looks like.
You’re signed into the wrong Google account
If you have multiple Google accounts (work + personal, school + personal, etc.), you may think YouTube is changing your subscriptions, when it’s actually happening on a different account you’re currently using.
Confirm the active account on the top-right profile menu (web) or your profile icon (mobile).
You used a browser extension or app that changes subscriptions
Some browser extensions, “growth tools,” or sketchy download managers claim they can help with analytics or auto-subscribe features.
Even legitimate automation tools sometimes break expectations and perform actions using your logged-in session.
YouTube is acting on an in-app prompt you accepted
Sometimes YouTube shows prompts like “Continue with Google,” “Install,” “Turn on notifications,” or account-related confirmations that you may accidentally accept.

Security Reasons: When Random Subscriptions Can Signal a Compromised Account
If you’re not sharing devices and you’re certain you’re not tapping Subscribe, random subscriptions are a red flag worth treating like a security incident.
Attackers often aim for actions that build credibility—subscriptions can help them look legitimate and may support follow-on scams.
Signs your account may be taken over
- New subscriptions you don’t recognize, especially soon after you haven’t used YouTube
- Unfamiliar watch history, liked videos, or playlists
- Security alerts from Google (new device sign-in, suspicious activity)
- Apps or devices you don’t recognize under Connected apps and devices
- Changes to your account recovery details or email settings
How attackers typically cause subscriptions
Common routes include stolen credentials (phishing), credential reuse, or an existing session kept alive on a device you don’t control.
Once an attacker has access, they can perform actions like subscribing using the same controls you normally use—meaning it shows up as a legitimate account change.
Step-by-Step Fix: Stop Random Subscriptions
Use this as a checklist. Even if the cause ends up being harmless, these steps still improve your account’s safety.
1) Verify the account and check where the subscriptions are coming from
- Open YouTube and click your profile icon.
- Confirm the Google account email you’re signed into.
- Go to Subscriptions and note the channels you didn’t choose.
If you have more than one account, repeat the check on each to find which one is being modified.
2) Review your recent activity and security alerts
- Go to Google Account Security page (search in Google: “Google Account Security”).
- Check for recent sign-in activity and any alerts.
- Look for devices/locations you don’t recognize.
If you see anything unusual, treat it as a compromise and move to the security steps immediately.
3) Secure your Google Account (password, 2-step verification)
- Change your Google password (avoid reusing old passwords).
- Turn on 2-Step Verification if it isn’t already enabled.
- Prefer an authenticator app or security key over SMS when possible.
In 2024, SMS is still better than nothing, but authenticator apps reduce the risk of SIM-swap attacks.
4) Remove access from connected apps and suspicious devices
- In your Google Account settings, find Security and then Third-party access / Connected apps (wording varies slightly).
- Remove apps you don’t recognize or don’t trust.
- Sign out of devices you don’t control (Google typically offers a “Sign out” option for active sessions/devices).
This step matters because some apps can keep permissions even after you change a password, depending on how access was granted.

5) Clean up browser extensions and device settings
- On your main browser, remove extensions you didn’t install or that seem unnecessary.
- Remove any “YouTube helper,” “auto subscribe,” “growth,” “downloader,” or “shortcut” style extensions you don’t trust.
- Restart the device after removing extensions.
On iPhone and iPad, you can’t manage extensions the same way as desktop browsers, but you can remove suspicious apps and revoke permissions in Settings.
6) Undo the damage: unsubscribe and audit your subscription list
Unsubscribe from the channels you didn’t choose. Then audit your Subscription list for any patterns (for example: all accounts in one niche you never watch).
If subscriptions keep reappearing after you secure your account, that’s strong evidence something still has access or a session is still active.

Device-Specific Troubleshooting (2024)
Use the platform that matches where you noticed the behavior. You’re looking for two things: confirming the active account and removing the likely source of the changes.
On YouTube for Web (PC and Mac)
Web is usually fastest for auditing because settings are more visible.
- Open YouTube.com and click your profile picture (top-right).
- Confirm the correct account email.
- Go to Subscriptions from the left menu and remove any unwanted ones.
- Open Google Account Security and check recent devices + sign-in activity.
- Change password + enable 2-Step Verification if needed.
On Android
Android makes it easy to confirm your account and remove suspicious apps quickly.
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile icon.
- Confirm the active account.
- Go to Your channel or Subscriptions and unsubscribe from suspicious channels.
- Open Google app settings → manage your Google Account security.
- In your Android settings, uninstall apps you don’t recognize and remove any suspicious accessibility or overlay permissions.
If a device shows up in Google security alerts and you don’t recognize it, sign out everywhere.

On iOS/iPadOS, focus on account security and app permissions.
- Open YouTube and confirm the signed-in profile.
- Unsubscribe from the channels you didn’t choose.
- Go to your Google Account settings via the Google app or your browser and review Security activity.
- Change password and enable 2-Step Verification.
- Remove apps you don’t recognize and check Settings for any unusual profiles, VPNs, or configuration profiles.
If the issue stops after removing an untrusted app, you likely found the source.
On Smart TV (Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV)
Smart TVs store sessions too, so make sure nobody is using your YouTube profile on the TV.

People often mix up subscriptions with recommendations or notification activity. The difference matters because it changes what you should investigate.
Notification and bell settings won’t auto-subscribe you (but can confuse you)
Turning on notifications makes it feel like YouTube is “pushing” new creators into your account, but it doesn’t create subscriptions on its own.
Random Subscribe state changes are about your subscription list, not just alerts.
Recommendations vs. actual subscriptions
Recommendations are driven by watch history, search, and engagement. Subscriptions are stored in your account and show up under Subscriptions.

Best practices for account hygiene
- Use a unique password and turn on 2-Step Verification
- Check Google Account security activity monthly (or when behavior changes)
- Avoid logging into YouTube on unknown public devices
- Review third-party access and remove anything you don’t recognize
Browser and app hygiene
- Remove sketchy “YouTube downloader” or “ad remover” extensions
- Keep browsers updated (Chrome, Safari, Firefox)
- On desktop, clear suspicious profiles and restart after extension removal
Family sharing and device control
If family uses your account on iPhone, Android, or TVs, consider separate Google accounts for each person. It reduces accidental subscriptions and improves accountability.
Also watch for “Remember me” prompts that can keep sessions alive on shared devices.

High-risk checklist
- Subscriptions start changing even after you remove extensions
- You see new sign-in devices/locations you can’t explain
- You notice changes to email settings, recovery info, or account recovery methods
- You received password reset emails you didn’t request
Change your password, enable 2-Step Verification, sign out of all devices, and remove connected apps right away.
Common Mistakes and Misdiagnoses
- Assuming YouTube’s algorithm “subscribes” you (it generally doesn’t change your subscription list without an action/permission)
- Fixing the wrong account (wrong Google profile signed in on one device)
- Unsubscribing but not securing the account (the source still has access, so the same channels reappear)
- Removing only YouTube changes but keeping a suspicious extension or app installed
Troubleshooting: If You Still See Random Subscriptions
If the problem continues after you’ve changed your password and reviewed security, do this in order.
- Force sign out everywhere in Google account security, then sign back in only on your trusted devices.
- Re-check connected apps and remove anything that has YouTube permissions you don’t recognize.
- Check for malware: run a reputable scan on your computer and remove unknown apps on mobile.
- Try a fresh browser profile (new Chrome profile or private window) and log into YouTube again.
- Test a different network: if it’s a device issue, the behavior may stop on a clean network.
- Contact Google support if you can’t regain control or see repeated suspicious activity.
If you’re continuously getting new subscriptions, assume there’s still an access path until proven otherwise.

Can YouTube subscribe me to channels without my permission?
YouTube generally doesn’t make subscription changes without an account action/permission. If you see subscriptions you didn’t choose, it’s usually due to shared access, an accidental tap, a different signed-in account, or unauthorized access.
Does turning on notifications subscribe me to a channel?
No. Notification settings control alerts; subscriptions control whether a channel appears in your Subscriptions list.
Will changing my YouTube password stop the problem immediately?
It often helps right away, especially if the issue was stolen credentials. If a connected app or active session remains, you may also need to sign out of devices and revoke third-party access.
Why does it happen only on one device?
That usually points to an account mix-up on that device, a shared user session, or a specific browser extension/app causing the subscription changes.
Should I remove my YouTube account from Google Family or shared devices?
If multiple people use the same Google account, separate accounts is the cleanest fix. It prevents accidental Subscribe taps and makes security auditing more reliable.
Bottom Line
Random YouTube subscriptions in 2024 are rarely “magic.” Most cases trace back to shared access, accidental taps, a wrong signed-in account, or a compromised session that still has permission.
Secure your Google Account (password + 2-Step Verification), revoke suspicious access, sign out of unknown devices, and then audit your Subscription list. If it keeps happening after that, treat it as an active compromise until every session and third-party permission is cleaned up.
