A Raspberry Pi that slows down under load may be throttling because of heat, while stutters or lockups can also point to a weak power supply, troubled boot storage, or a software or workload problem. Start by noting the Pi model, operating system, workload, and whether the problem is gradual, intermittent, or a complete system freeze. Then check temperature, power, and storage before buying parts or reinstalling the OS.
First, work out what is actually slowing down
Separate a sluggish desktop from a system-wide problem. If only one application is slow, focus on that application and its workload. If the display stops responding, check whether keyboard input, network access, and SSH stop too. A web service that is unreachable while the Pi itself remains responsive may indicate a network or service issue rather than a frozen computer.

Record the exact Raspberry Pi model, operating system, task being run, how long it takes for the problem to appear, and any recent changes. These details help distinguish a sustained performance drop from a one-off stall or complete hang.
Check for heat and thermal throttling
Raspberry Pi hardware automatically manages temperature under heavy load. Raspberry Pi’s computer hardware documentation says ARM cores are progressively throttled between 80°C and 85°C; at 85°C, the ARM cores and GPU are throttled. A Pi that performs well at first but slows during sustained work may be hitting this limit.

- Run
vcgencmd measure_tempwhile the task that causes the slowdown is running. Raspberry Pi says this gives an instantaneous reading by querying the GPU directly; Linux temperature readings can be inaccurate on these devices. - Check that vents are clear and the board has reasonable airflow. Keep it away from enclosed, hot spaces.
- If temperatures approach the throttling range during the affected workload, consider a compatible heatsink or fan. Cooling can reduce throttling; built-in thermal management protects the SoC, so a fan is not required simply to prevent heat damage.
For Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi lists the Active Cooler and Case for Raspberry Pi 5 as cooling options. Check case fit and fan compatibility before choosing an accessory. Avoid overclocking as a first response: Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation says overclocking and overvoltage are disabled at the thermal limit and during undervoltage, and configuration options vary by generation.
Check the power supply, cable, and peripherals
An inadequate supply or poor cable can cause unpredictable behavior that resembles instability or poor performance. Raspberry Pi’s power guidance gives these model-specific recommendations:

| Raspberry Pi models | Recommended supply |
|---|---|
| Pi 1–3 | 2.5A micro-USB supply |
| Pi 4 and Pi 400 | 3A USB-C supply |
| Pi 5 | 27W USB-C supply |
Pi 5 can boot with a 3A supply, but it restricts current available to USB peripherals. A high-power USB device may need a suitable higher-capacity USB Power Delivery supply. Check the current Raspberry Pi recommendation for your board, use a sound cable, and account for the combined draw of USB storage and other attached devices.

On Pi 1–4 models with separate red and green LEDs, a red power LED that is off or flickering indicates undervoltage. LED behavior differs on other models; Raspberry Pi’s LED documentation describes the model-specific meanings. On models with low-voltage detection, the documented trigger is below 4.63 V (±5%). Reduce peripheral load, use an appropriate externally powered hub where needed, or replace a poor-quality supply or cable.

- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Inspect the boot storage
Slow booting, application launches, or file operations make storage worth checking. Raspberry Pi says faster storage with higher read and write speeds improves overall performance, and calls SD card quality a critical factor in the user experience. Its boot-media guidance recommends at least 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Desktop and Full, and 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Those are capacity recommendations, not speed thresholds.
- Check available space and whether file operations or booting are unusually slow.
- Back up important files before replacing a card or re-imaging boot media.
- If the card is suspect, test with a reputable compatible Raspberry Pi microSD card or another supported faster boot medium. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
Official Raspberry Pi microSD cards carry C10, U3, V30, and A2 speed classes, but class markings alone do not guarantee a third-party card’s real-world performance. Raspberry Pi’s SD Cards page notes that performance varies by interface and Pi generation.

When an SSD makes sense
For a Raspberry Pi 5 workload that benefits from faster storage, an SSD is an option; Raspberry Pi documents Pi 5 SSD use with an M.2 adapter such as M.2 HAT+. Check the SSD compatibility guidance for the setup. An SSD is not a fix for thermal throttling, inadequate RAM, a CPU-heavy workload, or power instability, and it adds adapter cost and setup work.
If heat, power, and storage look normal
Inspect the software workload rather than assuming a hardware fault. Check whether one process is using most of the CPU, whether memory is exhausted, whether the root filesystem is full, and whether only one application becomes unresponsive. These are diagnostic checks, not proof that any one issue is a leading cause of Raspberry Pi slowdowns.

After backing up important data, updating the operating system and applications may be reasonable, particularly if the issue began after a software change. An update cannot remove a hardware bottleneck, so note whether behavior changes and avoid changing several settings at once.
Choose a fix that matches the evidence
- Temperature rises into the throttling range during the affected task: improve airflow and consider compatible cooling.
- Undervoltage indication, a flickering red LED on applicable models, or instability with peripherals attached: check the recommended supply and cable, then reduce peripheral load.
- Slow booting or file operations, or a suspect card: back up data and test compatible boot storage.
- Only one process or application stalls: inspect its CPU and memory use before replacing hardware.
- Display and local input stop, but remote access still works: investigate the desktop or application; if SSH and other access also stop, treat it as a possible system-wide hang.
For a complete freeze, record whether display updates, keyboard input, network access, and SSH stop, along with the time to failure, temperature, power warnings, model, OS, workload, and recent changes. That record narrows the diagnosis without presuming the cause.
