A laptop fan gets loud when the computer needs to move more heat out of its case. Gaming, video calls, demanding apps, background updates, charging, or a warm room can all raise cooling demand. If the noise continues when the laptop is idle, or sounds like grinding or rattling, check airflow and activity first, then use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or support.
When a loud fan is normal
Fans speed up as the processor and other components generate more heat. Sustained gaming, streaming video, or demanding applications can make a laptop warm and its fan run faster, according to Dell Support. On Surface devices, Microsoft also identifies workload, charging, initial setup, and background activity as reasons fan speed may temporarily rise.

Room temperature matters, too. Microsoft says a Surface fan may need to run more often or faster when the surrounding temperature is above 25°C (77°F), depending on workload. That figure is Surface-specific, not a universal temperature limit for laptops.

- Notice when the sound starts. Is it during startup, charging, updates, gaming, or a video call—or does it persist while the laptop is idle? The pattern helps identify whether demand is temporary or ongoing.
- Restore clear airflow. Place the laptop on a firm, level surface, uncover its vents, and move it away from direct heat. Soft bedding or a covered vent can restrict ventilation; lint and dust can also impede airflow. Do not open the laptop unless the manufacturer provides instructions for your exact model.
- Check for busy apps or updates. Look at your system’s activity tools for an app using substantial processor resources. Close work you do not need, but allow legitimate updates or first-day setup activity to finish. Microsoft’s advice for Surface users is: “If you’re mindful of what needs to be running and close apps that aren’t needed, you’ll help lower CPU utilization and reduce the need for assisted cooling by the fan.”
- Consider charging and room conditions. Charging or a warm environment can add to cooling demand. Make sure vents remain clear and give the laptop room to release heat.
Adjust power settings when performance can wait
On Surface, Microsoft says the Recommended power mode helps limit fan speed; higher-performance modes can allow more heat and faster fan operation. If you have a Surface, follow Microsoft’s instructions for your Windows version at Fan behavior and fan noise in a Surface device. This is Surface-specific guidance, not a setting path that applies to every Windows laptop.

When the fan may need service
Use the laptop maker’s diagnostics and model-specific support instructions if the noise remains unusual after you clear airflow and check activity. Dell’s initial checks include cleaning vents, reviewing power and thermal-profile settings, updating drivers, BIOS, and Windows, and running its fan test. Follow the instructions for your model rather than making generic BIOS changes or installing fan-control utilities.
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if a fan test fails, the fan runs at full speed while the laptop is idle, the sound is persistent and abnormal, or the computer overheats or shuts down. Grinding or rattling can also indicate a hardware problem. Dell advises stopping use and seeking support if the chassis is swollen or deformed, or if you notice a burning smell.

Will a cooling pad help?
A laptop cooling pad may help reduce heat, according to Dell Support, but it is an optional aid after basic airflow and workload checks—not a repair for a defective fan or a guaranteed fix for every laptop. Check compatibility with your exact model and keep its own vents unobstructed.
