A setting change can increase iPhone battery use if it leads to more screen activity, background work, location tracking, or notifications that wake the display. But the timing alone does not prove the setting caused the drain. Start with Settings > Battery and use the activity details to identify what changed.
How to find what is using your battery
- Open Settings > Battery. On iOS 26 or later, review Suggestions or Insights above Daily Usage, then compare the current day with the previous seven days. Daily Usage and Adaptive Power require iOS 26 or later. See Apple’s battery troubleshooting guidance for the documented interface and eligibility.
- Open App and System Activity Usage or View All Battery Usage. Look for an app or system activity whose use rose, and check whether iOS attributes it to background activity, weak or absent mobile coverage, or notifications.
- Match the activity to the setting you changed. If you changed a permission or feature for a particular app, test that setting while watching the app’s battery details. Background App Refresh and location activity are among the items Apple recommends reviewing; names and menu locations can vary by iOS release. Apple also lists battery-use guidance on these features.
Battery life varies with how you use the iPhone and which apps you use. An app’s total battery use is not automatically proof that a recent setting change is responsible; compare its activity with the time the problem began and with the activity details shown in Battery.

What the battery details can mean
Background Activity
“Background Activity” means most of an app’s battery use occurred while it was active in the background. Apple gives music playback and location tracking as examples. If this appears beside an app affected by your setting change, check whether that background work is expected for how you use it.

A phone working in weak or absent cellular coverage can use more battery. Apple says Wi-Fi uses less battery than mobile networks for internet access, so use Wi-Fi when available. On compatible devices, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G speed would not provide a noticeably better experience. Apple lists support for iPhone 12 and later and iPhone SE (3rd generation), among other devices, in its current guidance.

Notifications that wake the display
If a setting causes an app to send more notifications, the display may wake more often. Check Battery’s activity details for notifications and consider whether the change affected which alerts the app can send.
If the drain began after an iOS update
An update can leave tasks running in the background temporarily, affecting battery life and thermal performance. Apple recommends waiting a few days and then checking Settings > Battery again. A short-lived change after an update is different from a persistent drain tied to an app or system activity.

What Low Power Mode can—and cannot—tell you
Low Power Mode reduces or disables selected features. Apple’s current guidance includes Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects; its general battery guidance also describes reduced display brightness, optimized performance, and fewer animations. It can help conserve power, but turning it on does not establish which setting caused the faster drain.

When to check battery health
If the pattern continues, check the battery’s condition. On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If the status says Service, Apple advises considering battery replacement and following the onscreen instructions.

Compare the evidence, not just the timing
- Compare foreground use with activity marked as background activity.
- Compare days with strong coverage against days with weak or no mobile coverage.
- Separate a few days of post-update background work from a drain that persists.
- When Daily Usage is available, use its seven-day comparison to look for a meaningful change.
Apple does not establish that changing any one setting will produce a predictable battery-life improvement for every iPhone model or user. The useful next step is to identify the activity associated with the drain, then test the relevant setting rather than changing unrelated options.
