Some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max owners have reported intermittent crackles, ticks, pops or clicks, often from the earpiece speaker. The cause has not been confirmed: reports do not establish whether the issue is software or hardware, or how common it is. Here’s how to identify where the sound is coming from and when to contact Apple.
What the reported iPhone 18 sound is—and what it isn’t
Reports describe an audio artifact: a brief crackle, faint tick, pop or random click, usually heard through a speaker and often the earpiece. They do not confirm that the phone’s enclosure is physically cracking. Reports involve both iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but no reliable defect rate or affected-owner count has been published. MacRumors reported the complaints on September 29, 2026, and 9to5Mac described them as affecting a small number of owners on September 30.

The sound has been reported during cellular calls and ordinary phone activity, including app use, website scrolling, notifications, keyboard display, toggling Airplane Mode and quick brightness changes. Those varied triggers make it difficult to identify a single cause from the symptom alone.
Is it an iOS 27 bug or a faulty speaker?
Neither explanation is confirmed. Some users and store staff suspected software, but Apple had not publicly explained the reports as of October 2, 2026. iOS 27.0.1 release notes did not list a dedicated speaker fix, according to MacRumors. That does not establish whether a later update will address the sound.

Replacement experiences are mixed: some users have described hearing the sound on replacement phones, while others said it became less frequent. A replacement that also crackles does not, by itself, prove a software cause—or rule out hardware. Tom’s Guide reported that its staff could not reproduce the issue on its iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max test phones, which likewise does not show how often it occurs across other devices. Its October 2 report said Apple had not yet given a public explanation.
How to narrow down where the crackle comes from
- Note the location and circumstances. Listen for whether the sound comes from the earpiece/top speaker, the bottom speaker or a recording. Record which app was open, whether you were on a call, the volume level and what action preceded the sound.
- Update iOS and retest. Install the latest iOS available for your phone, then see whether the symptom changes. As of the reports above, iOS 27.0.1 did not list a dedicated speaker fix; an update may not resolve the issue.
- Compare different audio sources. Test a call, a locally stored video, music and a voice recording. If the crackle occurs only in one app or call mode, that points to a narrower path to investigate than a sound heard across every playback test; it does not identify the cause on its own.
- Check the speaker openings safely. Remove accessories that might touch or cover them, and check that the openings are clean and dry. Do not insert objects or liquids into the openings.
When to contact Apple or seek repair
Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the crackling persists, is loud, comes with distortion, or interferes with calls. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Repair Manual, published September 22, 2026, documents speaker, ringer and microphone troubleshooting, Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair, and procedures for the top and bottom speakers. It also lists an orderable top speaker. A technician can help determine whether diagnostics point to a speaker problem before repair is considered.

The manual documents repair procedures for iPhone 18 Pro; it does not establish that every reported crackle is a hardware failure or that every model has the same repair path. Avoid treating speaker replacement as a confirmed fix until the phone has been assessed.
