Yahoo is a search engine, not a browser. If searches from Chrome’s address bar open Yahoo, Yahoo is probably selected as Chrome’s default search engine. That setting is separate from the device’s default browser setting, which determines which app opens links. If Yahoo keeps returning after you change the search engine, check Chrome’s startup and homepage settings, extensions, installed software, and whether an administrator manages the device.
What “default browser” means in this case
Chrome is the browser: it displays websites and manages tabs. Yahoo Search is a search provider: it returns results when you search the web. People often call the page or service they see a “browser,” but the distinction matters because Chrome has separate settings for each.

| Setting | What it controls | Where to check it in Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Default browser | Which app opens links on your device. | Chrome’s default-browser setting; the exact device controls depend on your operating system. |
| Default search engine | Which provider handles searches typed in Chrome’s address bar. | Settings → Search engine. |
| Startup page | Which page or pages Chrome opens when it launches. | Settings → On startup. |
| Homepage | Which page opens when you select Chrome’s Home button, if it is enabled. | Settings → Appearance. |
Google notes that the homepage and startup page are separate settings unless you configure them to match. Search-engine choices and setup can also vary by country. Google Chrome Help: Set your homepage and startup page; Google Chrome Help: Set your default search engine.
How to change Chrome’s search engine
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Search engine.
- Choose the provider you want for searches from the address bar.
- Open Manage search engines and site search if you also want to review listed providers and site-search shortcuts.
Menu wording or placement can shift as Chrome changes. If the preferred provider is not listed, the available options may depend on your country or Chrome setup. Google Chrome Help: Manage search engines and site search.

If Yahoo appears on a new tab or when Chrome opens
A Yahoo page shown at launch or through the Home button does not necessarily mean Yahoo is the search engine for address-bar searches. Check the page settings separately:
- Go to Settings → On startup and review the pages Chrome opens when launched.
- Go to Settings → Appearance. If the Home button is enabled, check which page it opens.
Remove a page you do not recognize or intend to use, then test the relevant action: launch Chrome to check the startup page, or select Home to check the homepage. Google Chrome Help: Set your homepage and startup page.

Why the setting might have changed
A selected Yahoo search engine or Yahoo start page may be an intentional setting. If you did not choose it, or it returns after you change it, unwanted software or an unfamiliar extension is one possibility—but the setting alone does not prove that your device is infected or identify what changed it.

What to check if Yahoo keeps coming back
Review extensions and installed apps
In Chrome, open the extensions manager from the three-dot menu under Extensions → Manage Extensions. Remove extensions only if you do not want them or recognize them as unfamiliar, and keep enabled only extensions you trust. Review recently installed apps or programs on the device as well; remove software only when you are confident it is unwanted. Google’s cleanup guidance describes these as troubleshooting checks, not proof that a particular extension or app caused a change. Google Chrome Help: Remove unwanted ads, pop-ups and malware.
Check whether an organization manages Chrome
On a work or school device, an administrator may control startup or homepage settings. Google also notes that a network administrator may manage search-engine choices. If Chrome says it is managed or a setting is locked, ask the organization’s administrator rather than repeatedly trying to override the setting. Google Chrome Help: Set your homepage and startup page; Google Chrome Help: Manage search engines and site search.

Use Chrome’s reset only if simpler checks do not help
Chrome’s Restore settings to their original defaults action resets more than the search engine. It changes the default search engine, homepage and startup tabs, extensions and themes, content settings, and cookies and site data, among other settings. Google says saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed, and some extensions may need to be turned on again. Review the consequences before resetting.
