If Windows takes too long to start, first work out whether the delay happens before the sign-in screen or after you enter your password. Then check which apps launch with Windows, update the system, and use a clean boot to look for software conflicts. These steps can help identify a cause, but none guarantees a faster boot on every PC.
Find out where the delay happens
Time a restart or shutdown-and-startup sequence consistently, and note two intervals: how long it takes to reach the Windows sign-in screen, and how long it takes to reach a usable desktop after signing in. Keep the same method and conditions for each comparison. Change one setting at a time and compare again; otherwise, you will not know which change affected the result.

A delay before sign-in points toward startup apps, drivers, updates, or other boot-time issues. A delay after sign-in makes apps and background activity worth checking first. This is a troubleshooting distinction, not a definitive diagnosis.
Check which apps run at startup
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then select Startup apps. You can also go to Settings > Apps > Startup. Task Manager displays startup-impact categories and lets you disable an app. Microsoft says apps that run at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage (Microsoft Support).

Microsoft’s categories are based on CPU and disk activity, not a promise of how many seconds a particular PC will save:
- Low Impact: total CPU usage under 300 milliseconds and disk usage under 292 kilobytes.
- Medium Impact: CPU usage under 1 second but above 300 milliseconds, or disk usage under 3 megabytes but above 292 kilobytes.
- High Impact: CPU usage above 1 second or disk usage above 3 megabytes.
Disable optional apps you do not need immediately after signing in, such as a launcher or utility you can open when needed. If you are unsure what an item does, look it up before changing it. Do not indiscriminately disable security software or services; disabling an essential component can cause other problems. Microsoft documents the settings paths and impact thresholds in its startup-app guidance.
Install Windows and driver updates
Microsoft recommends checking for Windows updates and optional driver updates as part of broader PC performance troubleshooting. An update may address a software or driver issue, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a slow boot and may require a restart. Follow Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance for the update options available on your system.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Limited storage, outdated software, background apps, and malware are also among the factors Microsoft discusses in its broader performance guidance. They can affect overall PC performance, but their presence does not by itself prove what is delaying startup.

Windows 10 lifecycle: Microsoft says support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, and it recommends moving to Windows 11. Check Microsoft’s current guidance for lifecycle details.
Use a clean boot to check for software conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of services and startup apps. If startup behavior changes in that state, a third-party app or service may be involved. This is a diagnostic test, not a permanent setup; some functionality may be temporarily unavailable.
- Search Windows for System Configuration and open it.
- On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining services.
- Open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and disable the enabled startup items.
- Restart and compare startup behavior with your baseline.
- If the issue changes, re-enable items systematically—Microsoft recommends checking groups to narrow down the conflict—until you identify the item associated with the change.
- Restore normal startup after testing by reversing the changes.
Follow Microsoft’s full clean-boot instructions, especially if you are unsure how to restore the original settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse recovery diagnostics for boot problems, not routine tuning
Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. If the problem does not occur there, that helps narrow the possibilities, but it does not identify a particular faulty app by itself.

Boot logging
Boot logging creates a file named ntbtlog.txt listing drivers installed during startup. It is an advanced diagnostic aid rather than a routine speed-up setting. Microsoft explains these options in its Windows startup settings guide.
Startup Repair and update removal
Startup Repair runs in the Windows Recovery Environment and attempts to address certain failures that prevent Windows from starting, including some damaged system files or boot-configuration problems. It is not intended to shave time off a Windows installation that starts successfully. If a slowdown began after a specific update, Microsoft lists uninstalling that update as a possible recovery step. See its guidance for Startup Repair and Windows recovery options.
On an encrypted device, recovery tools may require the BitLocker recovery key. Make sure you can access it before starting recovery steps; Microsoft notes this requirement in its startup settings and recovery options guidance.
Consider hardware only when a limitation is evident
If software checks do not explain the delay and the PC has older or constrained hardware, a hardware upgrade may be worth investigating. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly from software steps. An SSD is a possibility only if the existing drive or hardware is implicated and the specific PC supports a compatible upgrade; verify the device or motherboard documentation before buying. The cited guidance does not establish that every slow-boot PC needs an SSD or quantify time saved.
A USB flash drive can be used to create a Windows recovery drive, which Microsoft recommends as preparation for recovery. That is a readiness measure, not a boot-speed fix; see Microsoft’s recovery options.
Quick Recap
Choose the next step from what you observe
- Long wait before sign-in, with optional apps showing high impact: disable only the apps you do not need at sign-in, then compare using the same timing method.
- Slowdown began after an app, driver, or update change: investigate that change first; if a recent update appears implicated, review Microsoft’s recovery guidance.
- Startup changes in a clean boot: re-enable items systematically to isolate a likely app or service conflict, then restore normal startup.
- Windows fails to start or shows a boot error: use recovery diagnostics such as Startup Repair for the failures it is designed to address.
- No software cause emerges and the PC appears hardware-constrained: check the exact device’s upgrade compatibility before considering hardware.
