Your phone and laptop can show different internet speeds even when they use the same home network. Their Wi-Fi hardware may differ, they may connect on different bands or from different rooms, and their tests may use different servers. To find the cause, compare devices under the same conditions and, if possible, test one over Ethernet.
Why do devices show different internet speeds?
A speed test measures the connection between two endpoints, not an abstract speed shared identically by every device. A router test and a phone test may measure different parts of the path and use different test servers. The Google Home app, for example, measures from the router or primary Wi-Fi point to Google’s servers; a test on a phone or computer includes that device’s connection to its selected server. Server location can change the result, so numbers from different tests are clues rather than directly interchangeable measurements. Google explains what its Wi-Fi speed test measures.

Devices have different capabilities
A phone, computer, television, or tablet may have a different Wi-Fi adapter, antenna, supported Wi-Fi standard, processor, operating system, or network port. Some phones may not reach computer speeds, and device model and software version matter. On a wired connection, the Ethernet adapter, cable, port, or even a USB adapter can limit throughput. A slower result on one older or less capable device does not by itself show that the internet plan is underperforming. Google Home and Nest Help discusses device-related speed differences; Google Fiber lists equipment and connection factors.
Wi-Fi signal and band vary
Devices in different rooms do not share the same radio conditions. Distance, walls, furniture, and other obstructions can weaken a signal. Devices may also connect to different frequency bands: 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther, while 5 GHz may deliver higher speeds when signal conditions are suitable. 6 GHz is available only when both the router and client support it, and it can work well close to the router. Nearby wireless networks and household electronics can add interference. Google identifies distance, band, and barriers as factors; Microsoft describes Wi-Fi bands and location testing.

Other network activity and ISP conditions change
Downloads, video calls, streaming, and cloud backups share network capacity. Internet-provider congestion may also vary by time and location. If results fluctuate, repeat tests at different times before concluding that a device is faulty or the provider is consistently slow. Google notes congestion and other factors can affect results.
How to compare devices fairly
-
Choose one speed-test service and keep its server selection consistent if possible.
-
Pause downloads, backups, streaming, and other heavy network use while testing.

-
Test the slower device near the router, then in its usual location. If practical, test the faster device in those same places.
-
If the device supports Ethernet, run a wired test for comparison. On multi-gigabit connections, check that the adapter, port, cable, and USB connection can support the expected throughput.
-
Change one condition at a time—such as location or band—and repeat the test. Recording results before and after changes helps show which factor matters. Microsoft recommends testing at different locations and recording results.

What the results tell you
-
The slower device improves near the router: Coverage, obstructions, interference, or the device’s connection band is likely part of the difference.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps | Reliable Performance, Easy Set Up, 20 devices, 4× Gigabit Port, Dual Band, AX1800- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
-
Wi-Fi is slow but Ethernet is faster on the same device: The issue is more likely in the Wi-Fi portion of the connection than in the device’s wired path.
-
Several devices are slow, including one on Ethernet: Check for service issues and contact your ISP with repeated test results. Provider congestion or a problem with the incoming connection may be involved.
-
Only one device remains slow in the same location: Check its supported Wi-Fi standards and bands, software, adapter, and ports before assuming the router or ISP is at fault.

A wired result is useful because it removes Wi-Fi from that device’s path, though the test still depends on the device, cable, adapter, router, test server, and current network conditions. Google Fiber recommends Ethernet for the strongest connection.

Ways to improve a slow result
-
Move the slower device closer to the router or mesh point and reduce obstructions.
-
Check which band the device uses and whether both it and the router support the faster available band or Wi-Fi standard. Not every device supports 5 GHz or 6 GHz.
-
Reduce competing network activity and rerun the test under similar conditions.

Place the router or mesh point in an open, central location. A mesh point or extender also needs a strong connection to the router; placing it where the signal is already poor may not help.

-
If a wired result is unexpectedly low, inspect the cable, adapter, network port, USB connection, and device software.
-
Restart the router or other networking equipment as a basic troubleshooting step. If multiple devices remain slow, check for an ISP service issue and share repeated measurements with the provider. Google recommends contacting the ISP when speeds are below expectations.
Additional equipment is most relevant when your comparison points to coverage, placement, or compatibility. A wired connection can help diagnose or serve a device with a compatible port, but buying a cable, extender, or new router will not fix a difference caused by device limits, test servers, or provider conditions.
