A cloud icon beside an iPhone app means the app has been offloaded to free storage. The app itself was removed, but its documents and data were kept; tap the cloud-marked icon to download the app again. Apple explains how offloading works.
What the cloud icon means
When iPhone storage is low, iOS can remove an app that you have not used recently while keeping the app’s documents and data. Its icon remains on the Home Screen with a cloud symbol. Tapping that icon reinstalls the app, provided it is still available to download.

How to get the app back
Use the Home Screen icon
- Connect to the internet.
- Tap the app’s cloud-marked icon on the Home Screen.
- Wait for the download to finish, then open the app.
Redownload it from the App Store
If you cannot find the icon, sign in to the Apple Account used to get the app. Apple’s redownload steps are My Account > Apps & Purchase History > Your Apps; find the app and choose its redownload control. This works only if the app remains available.
Does offloading delete your app data?
No. Offloading removes the app but retains its documents and data. Deleting an app is different: it removes the app and its related data. Apple describes the distinction in its iPhone storage guidance. If you reinstall an offloaded app, its retained data is available with it.

Can you stop automatic offloading?
On iOS 26, Apple lists the control at Settings > Apps > App Store > Offload Unused Apps. Turn it off to prevent automatic offloading. Menu names and locations can vary by iOS version. To review what is using space, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
If the app is missing without a cloud icon
An app that is not visible on the Home Screen is not necessarily offloaded. It may be in the App Library, on a hidden Home Screen page, or in the Hidden folder. Check those locations before redownloading it. Apple’s instructions for finding hidden apps explain where to look.
