If the volume slider is missing from Windows 11 Quick Settings, first check whether the problem is limited to that pane. Press Windows key+A to open Quick Settings, then check Settings > System > Sound for an output device. If Sound settings still lists your speakers or headphones, focus on the Quick Settings display; if the device is missing too, troubleshoot audio detection.
Check whether the volume control is actually missing
- Press Windows key+A, or select the Quick Settings area on the taskbar.
- Look for the volume control in the pane. Microsoft lists volume among the controls available in Quick Settings. If it is present but hard to see or does not respond, note that distinction before changing audio drivers or devices.
- Check the taskbar for a speaker or volume control, then open Settings > System > Sound and see whether Windows lists an output device.
These checks separate three different symptoms: a missing slider in Quick Settings, a missing taskbar volume control, or an output device that Windows no longer detects. Microsoft does not document one reset procedure for a slider missing only from an otherwise working Quick Settings pane. You can also right-click Quick Settings icons to access related settings or diagnostics. Microsoft’s Quick Settings guide describes the pane as a way to access frequently used settings without navigating through menus.

If Sound settings still shows your output device
When Settings > System > Sound lists the speakers or headphones you expect, confirm that the correct output device is selected and that its volume is not muted. These checks address the sound output itself; they do not establish that the Quick Settings slider will reappear. Avoid reinstalling a driver solely because the slider is missing from the pane while the output device remains available.

If Windows no longer detects an output device
Check the device in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- If your audio device appears, check whether it is disabled. Enable it if that option is available.
- If it does not appear, select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes.
A missing, outdated, disabled, or incorrectly loading driver can make sound options disappear or appear unavailable. The Device Manager steps help check whether Windows can see the hardware; they are relevant when Sound settings also lacks an output device, not just when Quick Settings lacks a slider.
Run Windows’ audio troubleshooter and restart
- Open the Get Help app and run the automated Audio troubleshooter.
- Restart Windows, then check Settings > System > Sound again for the output device.
Microsoft recommends this troubleshooter for Windows 11 output-device detection problems. It may help with audio detection, but Microsoft does not say it fixes every Quick Settings-only display issue. See Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting guidance.

Install a driver from the hardware maker if needed
If Windows still cannot detect the device and its driver is missing or incompatible, get a driver that matches your PC or sound card and Windows version from the computer or sound-card manufacturer’s support site. Install it and restart. Driver packages vary by hardware, so do not assume a generic driver is appropriate for every PC.
Do not confuse the slider with the enhanced volume mixer
The enhanced volume mixer is a related Windows feature, not the same thing as the basic volume control in Quick Settings. Microsoft announced per-app volume controls and audio-device switching, with Windows key+Ctrl+V as a shortcut to open the mixer. Its availability and presentation can vary by Windows build; Microsoft’s announcement was dated September 26, 2023. If the basic slider is absent, check Quick Settings and Sound settings first rather than assuming the mixer is missing. Microsoft’s Windows Insider announcement describes the enhanced mixer.
