The cause may be the creator’s channel eligibility or settings, the viewer’s account or location, the device or app, or the particular video page. Start by checking whether you are the channel owner or a viewer, then follow the relevant checks below.
If you own the channel: check eligibility and setup
Look for Memberships in YouTube Studio
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and go to Earn > Memberships.
- If the Memberships tab is available, complete setup and accept the Commerce Product Module when prompted. The tab appears only for channels YouTube considers eligible. If it is absent, check the channel’s eligibility and policy status rather than assuming India is unsupported. YouTube’s setup guidance explains the tab and activation process.
Review channel eligibility and content status
Being in an available country is only one requirement. YouTube also requires channels to meet the applicable fan-funding feature requirements and terms. A channel set as Made for Kids, or one with a significant number of Made for Kids or otherwise ineligible videos, may not qualify. YouTube identifies videos with music claims among potentially ineligible content and notes that some music channels may be excluded. Review the current criteria in YouTube’s channel-membership eligibility information.
Confirm memberships are switched on, and allow for review
Even an eligible channel will not show the button to viewers if memberships have not actually been turned on. If you have recently been accepted into the YouTube Partner Programme, activation may not be immediate: YouTube says it reviews the channel against membership eligibility criteria, and the stated process can take up to two days. Check the Memberships section again after that review window. YouTube’s instructions for turning memberships on or off describe the process.
If you are a viewer: check where and how you are viewing
Open the channel homepage or its membership page
The Join button is not available on every platform or every video watch page. A particular video page may be ineligible; YouTube gives videos claimed by certain music partners as an example. Visit the creator’s channel homepage first. You can also try adding /join to the end of the creator’s channel URL. These are alternative ways to reach the membership option, not a guarantee that the channel or your account qualifies. See YouTube’s guidance on why viewers may not see Join.

Try a computer if the app or watch page lacks the button
If Join is missing in the mobile app or on one video page, open the channel on a computer and check its homepage. Platform availability can differ, so a missing button in one place does not establish that memberships are disabled everywhere. YouTube lists joining on a computer as an alternative. Check YouTube’s platform and watch-page guidance.
Check viewer account, age, and country verification
Creator availability in India does not automatically make every viewer eligible to purchase a membership. The viewer must be at least 18 and signed in to a Google Account, and YouTube says either the viewer or creator may be outside an available region. If YouTube displays “We couldn’t verify your country,” try another network or device, or use the YouTube mobile app. If a VPN or proxy is active, consult that service’s instructions for turning it off. Quick way to isolate the cause
- You are the creator and Studio has no Memberships tab: check eligibility, channel content settings, and policy status.
- You are the creator and the tab exists but viewers see no Join button: verify setup is complete and memberships are turned on; account for a possible eligibility review after Partner Programme acceptance.
- You are a viewer and Join is missing on one video: try the channel homepage, the channel’s
/joinpath, or a computer. - You are a viewer and country verification fails: try another network or device, use the mobile app, and check whether a VPN or proxy is interfering.
- You are a viewer outside India: check your own region and purchase eligibility as well as the creator’s; India’s creator availability list does not settle your individual eligibility.
When to contact YouTube or the creator
If the creator’s Memberships tab is present, setup is complete, and memberships are switched on, but the button remains unavailable across the channel homepage and a computer, the creator can review the channel’s Studio status and contact YouTube through available creator support. A viewer can tell the creator which page, device, and app version they tried and share any displayed error; the creator can then distinguish a channel-side limitation from a viewer-side or platform issue. Do not assume a phone, VPN, or accessory will fix it: the documented checks concern channel eligibility, membership activation, account and location eligibility, and where Join is being accessed.
