Why Is PS5 Voice Chat Not Working? Fixes and Causes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PS5 voice chat problems are frustrating because they can come from anywhere: a wrong mic selection, a muted user, party/chat mode confusion, or a network issue that only affects voice. The good news is most fixes are deterministic once you narrow down where the failure happens.

This guide walks through the real-world causes and step-by-step fixes using PS5 system settings you can verify immediately. You’ll also get troubleshooting paths for the two most common outcomes: “I can’t hear others” and “they can’t hear me.”

What “PS5 Voice Chat Not Working” Usually Means

People use this phrase to describe different failures. The fix depends on which part of voice communication is failing: your microphone input, audio output, or the chat routing (party vs game).

  • You can’t hear anyone (voice audio is silent or extremely low).
  • They can’t hear you (your mic appears to be on, but nobody receives audio).
  • Voice chat intermittently drops (works for a few seconds, then cuts out).
  • Only one game is affected (voice works in party but not in a specific title).
  • Only you are affected (others on the same party can hear each other).

Quick Checks You Should Do First (2–5 Minutes)

Before changing deep settings, do quick checks that rule out the most common causes.

  • ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation

  • VOLUME WHEEL — Its on-headset control makes it convenient to adjust audio levels without having to fiddle with any system or program settings
  1. Check the headset/mic physical mute switch (many headsets have one).
  2. Make sure the microphone isn’t covered by a mouthpiece position or a controller mute button.
  3. Remove and re-seat the headset connector (for wired headsets) and fully charge wireless headsets.
  4. Confirm you’re actually in Party Chat or Game Chat and that the other players are in the same mode.
  5. Restart your PS5 once (power off fully, then turn back on).

Fix 1: Confirm the Right Mic Is Selected (PS5 System + Controller)

If the PS5 is listening to a different input device, your voice won’t transmit even if you hear game audio normally.

Check microphone input device

  1. On PS5, go to Settings > Sound > Microphone.
  2. Under Input Device, select the headset/mic you’re using (for example, USB headset, controller mic, or compatible Bluetooth device).
  3. Speak and watch the Microphone Level indicator. If it doesn’t move, the system isn’t receiving your mic audio.

If you’re using a wired headset with the DualSense controller, ensure the headset is truly compatible with the controller’s 3.5mm port (CTIA-style headsets typically work; some TRRS/TRRS variants don’t).

Fix 2: Set the Correct Input/Output Settings for Voice Chat

Even with the right mic selected, voice volume and audio mixing can still break if input/output routing is wrong.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify output device and chat mix

  1. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  2. Set Output Device to your active headset/device.
  3. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority) and leave defaults unless your setup requires change (voice chat issues are almost never caused by this, but misconfiguration can silence audio).
  4. Under Settings > Sound > Microphone, confirm the Microphone Volume isn’t at zero or muted.

For iPhone-style wired mics or certain USB capture devices, PS5 may not treat them as a microphone input. In that case, the Input Device won’t show the expected device, and voice chat will stay broken until you use a supported headset path.

Fix 3: Update Your Party/Chat Mode (Party Chat vs Game Chat)

Many “voice chat not working” cases are actually routing problems. Party Chat and Game Chat are separate channels.

Confirm who you’re talking to

  1. Open the PS5 Control Center.
  2. Go to Game Base or Party card.
  3. Make sure you’re in the same channel with the other players: either Party Chat or Game Chat.
  4. In the party screen, verify voice indicators show activity when you speak.

If you can hear others in party but not in a game lobby, the game’s built-in voice may be configured separately in its own options menu.

Fix 4: Check Privacy Settings and Voice Chat Permissions

PS5 voice chat can be blocked by privacy or parental controls. This is more common on managed accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify privacy settings

  1. Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy.
  2. Look for options related to Communication with Other Players and Voice Chat.
  3. Set communication permissions to allow voice/chat with the relevant group (friends/anyone, depending on your needs and account status).

If you’re under a child/teen account setup, the voice permissions are often enforced by the account manager. You’ll need that manager account to adjust rules.

Fix 5: Unblock/Remove Mutes and Check Communication Restrictions

Sometimes the mic is fine, but the chat system won’t pass your audio because you’re muted or blocked.

Check for mutes inside the party or game

  1. Open the Party interface.
  2. Check each participant’s voice status. If anyone shows a mute icon, unmute them.
  3. If you blocked a user, confirm they’re not in your Blocked Users list.

Also check the specific game’s player roster for voice mute options. Many multiplayer games let you mute per-player inside the match UI.

Fix 6: Verify Audio Output Device and Monitoring Options

If you can’t hear others, the issue is usually output routing, not transmission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm output and microphone monitoring

  1. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  2. Set Output Device to your headset.
  3. Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone and find options like Monitor Microphone or monitoring behavior (wording can vary by firmware).
  4. Temporarily enable monitoring so you can confirm the PS5 is receiving your voice through the same device you’re listening with.

If monitoring works (you hear yourself), but nobody else hears you, the problem is transmission/routing—not output audio.

Fix 7: Test Network Issues That Break Voice Chat

Voice chat uses real-time network paths. Packet loss, strict NAT, or unstable Wi‑Fi can cause one-way audio or total silence.

Check NAT type and connection quality

  1. Go to Settings > Network > Connection Status.
  2. Note NAT Type. If it’s Type 3 (Strict), voice chat may fail depending on the game and party routing.
  3. Run Test Internet Connection and compare results. If the test shows packet loss or unstable speeds, fix the Wi‑Fi first.

For the fastest validation, plug your PS5 into Ethernet for a single test. If voice chat immediately works on Ethernet, you’ve confirmed Wi‑Fi instability as the cause.

Fix 8: Reboot, Reset, and Rebuild When Settings Don’t Stick

If changes don’t apply or the issue persists across headsets, use progressively stronger recovery steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Soft reboot

  1. Hold the power button on the PS5.
  2. Select Turn Off PS5.
  3. Unplug power for ~30 seconds (optional but helpful for stuck network services).
  4. Turn it back on and retest voice chat.

Clear audio device pairing quirks

  1. Remove the headset from Bluetooth pairing (if used) and re-pair it.
  2. After pairing, re-check Settings > Sound > Microphone > Input Device.

Safe Mode options (use carefully)

  1. Power off PS5 fully.
  2. Press and hold the power button until you hear a second beep (Safe Mode).
  3. Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database options where available.
  4. If you use Rebuild Database, expect the console to take time to scan storage (it’s not a full data wipe).

Only consider Reset PS5 when cheaper steps fail. If you must reset, back up game saves to iCloud or USB if your setup supports it.

Headset and Controller Compatibility Notes (Common Gotchas)

Hardware quirks often masquerade as “PS5 voice chat” problems.

  • DualSense 3.5mm headsets: Works when the headset is compatible with the controller’s mic wiring standards. If the mic level indicator doesn’t move in Settings > Sound > Microphone, it’s not being detected correctly.
  • USB headsets: Prefer USB headsets with a dedicated PS5/PC mode. If the headset is set to a different audio mode, PS5 may treat it as output-only.
  • Bluetooth headsets: Many Bluetooth headsets work for output audio but can be unreliable for microphone input on consoles. Always verify the Input Device shows correctly.
  • Wired adapters: USB-C audio adapters may not present as a PS5 microphone. If your adapter doesn’t appear as an input device, PS5 can’t transmit your voice.

When Only You Can’t Be Heard (Targeted Troubleshooting)

This scenario usually points to input selection, mic level, mute state, or permissions.

  1. In Settings > Sound > Microphone, speak and check the microphone level indicator.
  2. Ensure Microphone Volume is above zero and monitoring is enabled temporarily.
  3. In the party screen, confirm you’re not muted and that your teammates aren’t muted to you.
  4. Check game voice options (many games have a per-game toggle like Voice Chat: On/Off, or Mic Input: Auto/Manual).
  5. If you recently changed headsets, re-pair and then re-select Input Device.

If the microphone level indicator moves but others still can’t hear you, the issue is often routing (party vs game chat) or communication permissions.

When Everyone Else Can’t Hear You (Wider Troubleshooting)

If multiple people report they can’t hear you, treat this like an input transmission failure rather than a single-player UI issue.

  • Try a different headset/microphone immediately to isolate hardware.
  • Move your PS5 from Wi‑Fi to Ethernet for a quick test.
  • Reboot the console and re-check microphone settings.
  • Confirm NAT type isn’t Strict (Type 3). If it is, adjust router settings or consult your ISP documentation for NAT and firewall options.

Comparisons: Party Chat vs Game Chat and Why It Matters

PS5 voice behavior differs based on where your audio is routed.

Chat Type Typically Affected By Common Symptoms
Party Chat PS5 party settings, privacy, mic input device You can’t be heard by party members, or nobody hears anyone consistently
Game Chat Game settings, lobby settings, per-title voice toggles Voice works in party but not in a specific game match

If party chat works but game chat doesn’t, don’t keep changing PS5 microphone settings—you’ll get faster results by checking the game’s voice settings.

Common Mistakes That Keep Voice Chat Broken

  • Wrong mic input device selected in Settings > Sound > Microphone.
  • Mixing party and game chat (you’re talking to a channel nobody else is listening to).
  • Using a headset that only outputs audio but doesn’t provide mic input to PS5.
  • Muted user inside the party or game roster.
  • Ignoring NAT/connection issues when the problem appears intermittently.
  • Leaving microphone volume at very low levels so your voice is effectively not transmitted.

FAQs About PS5 Voice Chat Problems

Why does my PS5 mic level move, but nobody can hear me?

That usually points to routing (Party Chat vs Game Chat), a muted participant, or permissions/privacy restrictions. Confirm you’re in the same chat mode as the other players and check the game’s voice toggles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can I hear others but they can’t hear me?

Most often it’s an input device mismatch or the mic isn’t actually being selected. Re-check Settings > Sound > Microphone and verify microphone level indicator movement.

Does PS5 voice chat work on strict NAT type?

It can, but it’s less reliable. If NAT is Type 3 (Strict), try Ethernet, enable correct router features (if you know them), or test a different network to see if voice stabilizes.

My headset works for game audio but not for voice. What should I do?

Verify the headset appears under Input Device. If it doesn’t, the headset may be output-only for PS5. Test with another supported headset/mic to isolate compatibility.

Will rebuilding the database fix voice chat?

It can fix corrupted local system states. It won’t fix misconfigured privacy, wrong chat routing, or headset incompatibility, so use it after confirming settings and permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

When PS5 voice chat isn’t working, start by validating mic input and the correct chat channel, then move to privacy/permissions and network stability. Most issues are solved by confirming Settings > Sound > Microphone input selection and ensuring you’re in the same Party Chat or Game Chat mode.

If the problem persists, isolate hardware by testing a different headset, then isolate connectivity by trying Ethernet. That two-step approach usually turns a frustrating mystery into a clear cause.
