Why Is Online Backup Slow—and How Can You Speed It Up?

A slow backup may be uploading a large first-time dataset, processing many files, competing for upstream bandwidth, or waiting on an active computer. Diagnose the cause before changing client settings.

An online backup is often slow because the first run must upload the whole selected dataset, while later runs usually send only new or changed files. Upload capacity, other network traffic, Wi-Fi, distance and latency to the service, file-processing time, and a computer that sleeps can all extend the wait. Check what the backup client is doing before changing settings: a long “processing” phase is different from a slow active upload.

Why an online backup can take so long

The first backup has more to transfer

The initial run is a bulk upload, not a quick sync. Backblaze says its first backup may take substantial time because it must upload all initial files; subsequent backups should be quicker because they send new or changed files. The actual duration depends on how much data is selected and the usable upload rate, so there is no reliable universal completion-time estimate. Backblaze’s explanation of backup and restoration time frames describes this first-run difference.

Upload speed is only one part of the route

Your internet plan’s headline speed may emphasize download capacity, while a backup sends data upstream. The effective rate can also be affected by network congestion, other devices and apps uploading, Wi-Fi quality, latency, the route to the provider, distance from its servers, and computer performance. Microsoft lists connection speed, geographic proximity to OneDrive servers, ISP upload allowance, and computer speed among the factors affecting large transfers. Backblaze offers a test directed at its own data centers because a generic speed test may not reflect the route to its service. Microsoft’s OneDrive transfer guidance and Backblaze’s slow-backup guidance describe these service-specific considerations.

File discovery and processing can resemble a stalled upload

Backup and sync clients may need to scan, index, or process files before transferring them. A large number of small files can take time to discover and handle even when their combined size is not especially large. In OneDrive, “Processing changes” may persist after many files or a very large file have been added; that status does not necessarily mean the network is the bottleneck. See Microsoft’s explanation of OneDrive’s “Processing changes” status.

Sleep, schedules, and disconnected sources interrupt work

Uploads stop when a computer sleeps. A laptop that closes its lid or a desktop that enters sleep mode can make an apparently long backup a series of short work periods. A scheduled client may also wait for its permitted backup window. If the backup includes files on an external drive, that drive must remain connected and available for the client to read those files.

Diagnose the delay before changing anything

  1. Read the client’s status and remaining-work estimate. Determine whether it is scanning or processing files, actively uploading, waiting for a schedule, or reporting an error. A processing message points to a different issue than a low active transfer rate.
  2. Check the upload path. Run a reputable internet speed test, but treat its result as an estimate rather than a promise of backup speed. If your provider has a test for its own service route, compare that result too. Backblaze provides a data-center speed test in its slow-backup guidance; the result is specific to that route and can differ from a general test or your plan’s advertised rate.
  3. Look for competing uploads. Video calls, file sync, remote desktop, gaming, and other transfers can share upstream capacity. Check other computers and phones on the same connection as well as activity on the backup computer.
  4. Confirm the computer and source files stay available. Keep the computer awake, connect a laptop to power when practical, and leave any external backup drives attached. Check that the client’s schedule allows it to run while the computer is available.
  5. Separate slowness from a blocker. For OneDrive, check that the account has storage available and that the file is permitted, accessible, and within the applicable size and path requirements. Storage exhaustion, lost connectivity, permissions, or unsupported files can prevent upload rather than merely slow it. Microsoft’s OneDrive and SharePoint restrictions and limitations explains service-specific constraints.

How to speed up an online backup safely

Let the initial upload run continuously

Keep the computer awake and on a stable connection for as much of the initial backup as possible. Avoid repeatedly pausing, restarting, or changing settings without a reason; the client may need to scan files again. For Backblaze Computer Backup, the provider says the initial backup should complete within 30 days and recommends contacting support if its estimate is longer. That is Backblaze’s service-specific expectation, not a guarantee for other providers or every dataset. Backblaze’s Computer Backup best practices gives this guidance.

Try Ethernet when Wi-Fi may be the weak link

A wired connection can remove weak signal, interference, or wireless congestion between the computer and router. Microsoft recommends wired networking for large OneDrive transfers. Ethernet will not raise the connection above the ISP’s upstream capacity or correct a slow route beyond your home network, so it helps only when the wireless segment is limiting performance. Use a compatible port or adapter and a router port; if available, compare the client’s progress on the same backup workload before and after switching.

Reduce competing traffic, or pick a quieter time

Pause or schedule other large uploads while the backup runs. If the connection slows mainly at busy household or neighborhood times, try running the initial upload during a quieter period. Keep the backup itself active rather than setting an unnecessarily low cap: a fixed limit protects capacity for other tasks but necessarily makes the backup take longer.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Choose bandwidth controls that fit the service

Settings differ by product, so do not assume a control in one client exists in another.

  • OneDrive: Its sync client provides fixed upload and download limits or “Adjust automatically.” A low fixed upload limit extends transfer time; automatic adjustment lets it use available bandwidth in the background. Microsoft suggests pausing syncing during a temporary period of poor network performance rather than imposing a very low cap. Work or school administrators may manage or hide these settings. See Microsoft’s OneDrive bandwidth-setting guidance.
  • Backblaze Computer Backup: Backblaze describes turning off automatic throttling and increasing manual throttle or thread settings to use more bandwidth. Make small changes and observe both backup progress and the rest of your connection. Too many threads can saturate the connection and lead to timeouts or other network problems; there is no universal best thread count. See Backblaze’s slow-backup guidance and its performance-settings instructions.

Use a suitable method for large batches

For OneDrive, Microsoft recommends the desktop app rather than the website’s upload button for large files or lots of files. Browser file-size limits and account rules vary: Microsoft’s current guidance describes support for files up to 250 GB in applicable contexts, while older browsers and some work or school situations have different limits. Check the requirements for the account and client you actually use before treating that figure as universal. See Microsoft’s OneDrive upload guidance.

Keep external backup drives connected

If an online computer-backup service includes files from a removable drive, leave it connected during the backup and subsequent scans. A disconnected source cannot be uploaded, and the client may need time to rescan when it returns. Backblaze’s best-practices guidance recommends keeping external drives connected during backup.

Service-specific issues that should not be generalized

OneDrive: processing and item-count limits

OneDrive is a file-sync service, so its behavior is not a universal guide to dedicated computer-backup clients. Microsoft says performance issues can occur above 300,000 synced items in the documented OneDrive and SharePoint scenario and recommends staying at or below that total for optimum performance. A separate Windows public preview supports up to one million items only with specified hardware and software requirements. These are OneDrive-specific figures, not a general cloud-backup limit. Consult Microsoft’s current restrictions and limitations for the configuration and account in use.

Backblaze: route and connection behavior

Backblaze says customers farther from its North American data centers may see slower transfers. Its international-customer guidance describes 10 MB chunks and one connection at a time, making latency potentially significant; it says multithreading may help in some cases. Those details describe Backblaze’s setup and should not be applied to other backup providers. See Backblaze’s international backup-speed guidance.

When a local drive helps—and when it does not

A local external drive provides another recovery copy and can be useful if you need access to data without downloading it from the cloud. It does not make the internet upload faster: it is a separate copy on a separate storage device. Backblaze recommends combining an off-site backup with a local external-drive copy in its Computer Backup best practices.

When to contact support

Contact the backup provider if the client reports errors, the estimate does not move despite extended active time, a file remains blocked, or the service’s own route test is unexpectedly poor. Include the provider and client version, whether the run is initial or incremental, the client status, approximate remaining data, connection type, and any test result. For Backblaze Computer Backup specifically, its best-practices guidance says to contact support if the initial-backup estimate exceeds 30 days.
